Consoles on a Laptop Monitor

CAGiversary!
I'd like to get my consoles on my laptop HD screen, and read that TV tuners are the only viable option. Has any of you CAG's pulled this off? If so, what make/model tuner did you buy? Isn't there latency problems via a tv tuner? I'm looking to actually play, not just record. Thanks!

I have a TV tuner for my Macbook that I can play games on, but only SD. If you're looking for HD, you're most likely out of luck. Unless you laptop has a high-bandwidth expansion port, you'll never get the speed you need to play an HD game. USB just won't cut it for 720p or 1080p. But they do make HD TV tuners for expansion ports, so if you've got a decent laptop, an expansion port and a fair bit of money, I'm sure you can find one.

But trust me when I say, you're better off just grabbing a monitor that can handle the console directly. Hell, yesterday Woot had a 22" 1080p for only $100. Much better than trying to fool around with the TV tuner.

I am interested in the portability...I have a very modular lifestyle, where i can pack all my belongings strategically, and go "Hoteling it" in Pattaya, or Tokyo without haveing to sublet my Honolulu apt , or even buy a temparory storage unit. I can flip the consoles on the web, or even pack them...

A laptop is creme for MMORPG's, and GW2's beta this weeked, yeah i'm all over it...but I'm a Jrpg/fighter as my bread and butter...always have been always will...and well, let's face it...can't get Tekken Tag 2 on steam!

Adaptec made a device for this sort of thing a few years ago. It had horrible latency and was really only suitable for recording game footage directly to a file.

An alternative might be a small HDTV you could pack with a console. The bonus is that it could be used as a secondary monitor on the laptop, which can be a big help for MMORPGs. The trick is finding a model with good portability.

As previously stated, while it's possible, it's not really what laptops were designed for. I'd say your best bet is just to either get a handheld system or pick up a portable screen for your preferred console.

However, if you want to go the extreme route, you could "Ben Heck" your own PS3 laptop.

I know Alienware has an HDMI port on its laptop that goes both ways. You can plug a device into it and have the laptop just turn into a monitor. I can't find any other computer makers doing something like that through.
