Could I get some opinions before I make my next thread?

Being new to this forum, I wanted to get the thoughts of everyone else before I made the next sale thread I was contemplating so that I don't end up looking stupid.
I was thinking of starting up a thread here to sell my photography online - mainly because:

1. I'm aiming to make it my career.
2. all proceeds go to help pay my rent during tough times.

I just want to know from you regulars here if it would be a waste of time to do that. I've been told by most of my professors that I have the talent to be a professional in my field and I thought it would be a good idea to start early to get my name out quicker. That and I can't afford my own website at the moment.

Oh, and so the question doesn't come up, I do have a way of giving previews of my work that doesn't compromise my sales.

Honestly, it's worth a shot - I'd say that it depends on how much you'd be looking for per print etc. It might not work out, but like I said, stranger things have happened and I like to be optimistic ;)

well I call having my first reply being one that doesn't rip my post apart a good start :D - and concerning prices it would depend on the print, the size, and if a frame is desired. I also give discounts depending on how many are bought, and I send the potential buyer contact sheets with tiny previews of my pictures grouped by topic or subject.

Don't know if you'd have much luck selling photos on a deals site. When I first read your post, I thought you were looking to sell scans of stock photos (i.e. like Punchstock). That would be something I use, but probably couldn't be talked into buying. To me, it seems like framed photos appeal to a completely different demographic than what you'll find here. Just my two cents. Also, a word of advice: when/if you do create this thread, whatever you do don't post it in the Cheap Ass Video Game Deals forum. You'll be promptly maimed. ;-)

I remember my first maiming as a n00b ;)
It might even be a good idea to post this in the Off Topic forum first - since here its mostly games with a sideboard of electronics - at the least, even if you were making a minimum profit, you'd still be getting your work out there.

I disagree with the posting it in the Off-Topic forum idea. It would be completely out of place there. Really, I think the Trading forum would be the only place for it. If you had a site already set up for this, I'd recommend "advertising" it in the Auction Discussions forum. Although this isn't technically an auction, that forum would be more appropriately titled Advertisements. :p

In light of this, Javil's right - I was thinking of OTM's thread, but now I realize he gives away things for free, so totally different ;)

I don't know about other gamers, but my wall decor is pretty much entirely made up of posters. I've never bought a framed photo, and such a thing strikes me as more of an elegant decor suitable for a more middle-aged demographic.

... You know what? Talk to Shrike, Visc. He may be interested in this.

 Oh wow, that made my night.
And as an aside, I frame all my posters and have some framed art for the appartment ;) I'm also an interior decorating consultant by day so that probably explains my interest in good photography
(The frames are simplistic black metal, not big gaudy wood ones)

If you're serious, I'm very shocked that you're an interior decorating consultant. From creating massive "shocker" paper maché statues to giving other people advice on what looks good and not tacky. That's some leap...

Haha - I didn't actually make that, I just ended up with it.
And thats just a fancy job title used to make people think I'm important - I work for a company run by one of my mom's friends and basically I go in once the job's been done and hear all the complaints, go back to the office, get told how to fix them and then fix them, making me look like an amazing hero and making the customer uber-happy. Somewhere along the line I did pick up an appreciation for class though ;)

yeesh, I go to bed early one time and look at all the dialogue I missed. Thanks for all the feedback. In terms of appealing middle aged demographic - my range of topics is so broad that I can get anyone's liking, going from my youngest fan at age 5, to my oldest at 101. :bouncy:

Oh, and for the record, I can make some of my works into posters too - I just don't do it very often due to time constraints. That and I have to raise my prices when I do it.

I should probably admit too that when I say "frames", I mean generic black frames you can get at the store, but I don't get complaints in regards to that.

You can always set up on a free site. There are plenty of places that will also help make your webpage. You should do work here for free, you know doing sigs and just posting drawings. You should do alot of request and see where that gets you.

I buy art all the time. I have a fascination with charcoal nudes(of women). It looks real classy and pimp. I'm not talking like porn but like art.

Oh I know what you mean by that - even though I'm specifically a media arts major I did have to take some drawing based classes. Its funny, I can't seem to set up any photo shoots of artistic nudes without getting slapped in the process :whistle2:\".

I really went out of my way to frame a rare OOP poster that I acquired awhile back. What I did was buy a cheap poster from an online poster merchant that offered framing (only for posters purchased from them), then slid in my poster over the cheap one. The result looks great, but it was a really roundabout way of getting it done. It seems that if you go into an actual store to get something framed, they want to charge you a freakin' arm and a leg. (BTW, I've never seen a pre-built frame at a store large enough to accomodate a standard-sized poster.)

Javil you should check your city or town. Some places have framing places. I got some of mine customed frame after i looked in the phone book and called everyone and asked them their prices. This one guy did one for about 20 and another for 30. and they came out awesome. I have one more i need to get done but i havent had the time.

also, i bought my art on ebay. Now i'm a regular with the artist that drew me the pictures i got. I think his name is steven riggiman. He also sends a free print with every drawing i buy. But i think he has tons of prints of some his good work. I'm sure he invested alot of money into it.

actually I just went to Staples or Target and bought my frames there and put my work in them. They're simple frames that tend to look pretty good with my work in them.

Though I do wish one of relatives didn't give up their framing business - I could have gotten some really good ones that was and much more customizable.
