Could Sony DISABLE the Emotion Engine in a update for those who already have PS3's?

CAGiversary!
What if SONY puts out an update that DISABLES the Emotion Engine for PS3's of those who already own one? Could they do that? Would they?

Removing the EE is a cost cutting measure, why would they disable it in consoles already sold.

If you would quit touching yourself at night, they would keep it enabled

As everyone else has said, there is absolutely NO reason for them to disable it. I guess they COULD, but it would not present any gain whatsoever for them. What they might do is allow for downloads of the software emulator as well, to take advantage of whatever benefits might be included therein, but I don't see why they would have any incentive to disable the current systems.

I guess mine is going to be disabled T.T

I would think what is most likely is if the emulator becomes more mature and has more features than the hardware allows, there will be an option to use either. (probably not like "Use hardware PS2 emulation", more like "Upscale via HDMI" or something that the hardware won't do-- that's a bad example but you get the point... "Super smooth PS2 textures", whatever). If you turn the option on, you'd get software emulation.

Time. Time can disable the sun. Just as it can disable us all. None can defeat time.

(I should write scripts for J-rpgs.)

no no no, except random 15 year old kid in some destitute town that gets crapped on by the evil guy for no reason.

In all seriousness. There's no financial reason why they would do such a thing.

Now, they may disable the use of the emotion engine in certain games which have full emulation support. This would allow them to enhance the game, but otherwise the emotion engine is staying active for a long time.
Phil Harrison stated that they can't disable it, it's already in. This was back in March I believe.
qft he said it in a 1up interview

joystiq is now reporting that there is a disclaimer on the 80GB box stating that it will have limited BC with PS2/1 titles.

My guess is that this is just covering their butts until the s/w emulation is up to speed. The s/w emulation will be more flexible, and should allow more games to work. Most people have a negative view of s/w emulation because the emulators they use are reverse engineered. The EE emulator would be written with intimate knowledge of the chip. True s/w emulation is _very_ slow, but the Cell should easily be able to handle it.

I wouldn't be suprised if eventually the s/w emulation has a higher number of BC titles, thus leading it to be used on machines even with the EE chip.

Nonetheless, I am happy to have my 60GB.

Now, that's the smartest post i read so far... i was going to say something like that, thanks for the post.

Why does everyone think that Sony will keep up with software emulation when Microsoft didn't? Is it easier to do on the PS3 or is it just wishful thinking?

*pimp-slaps Apossum to tearz* You're not funny.

I'm guessing that's because it's SONY. Well, think about it, if a popular PS2 game doesn't work on the PS3, that will make the PS3 look very stupid. MS? I don't know why they didn't do the same.

I skipped out the PS2 and Xbox consoles due to work and stuffs... so yeah, being able to play some of the "older" games is a bonus.

There is no reason to disable the EE chip. It's hardware so it will always be better than the software emulation they are writing. It sucks that the PS3 is so expensive, I'd run out and buy a 60GB for $499 but I just can't afford to right now.
