Senate passes same-sex legislation

Last Updated Tue, 19 Jul 2005 23:48:37 EDT CBC News

Canada has become the fourth country to officially sanction same-sex marriage. The Senate has voted 47-21 in favour of the Liberal government's controversial Bill C-38.

Three senators abstained.

The historic vote comes after gay and lesbian couples launched lawsuits in different provinces demanding the right to marry.

Courts in seven provinces agreed that the traditional definition of marriage violated the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The Liberal government responded to the first of those rulings - in Ontario in 2003 - by introducing legislation which was adopted last month in the House of Commons.

Conservative Leader Stephen Harper has said he will bring back the same-sex debate if he's elected prime minister.

The bill will become law when it receives royal assent on Wednesday.

This should be a big relief to the Department of Homeland Security. I mean if Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson were right, God will be punishing Canada from now with terrorist attacks for condoning gay marriage.

May I be the first to thank Canada for taking one for the team. Thanks, eh?

Nope, there was an earlier post saying it had been approved by parliament, but it still needed to be approved by the senate.

If 2 homosexuals were to get married in Canada and then move here, would their marriage carry over? Would they get the same tax breaks, etc?

Generally, no. Vermont would probably give them those same benefits, just not the title of marriage (since they perform civil unions). Massachusetts would probably treat them as any other same sex couple married in MA.

I know they definately aren't given those rights in the 48 other states, but I'm not certain how the states that legalized marriage or civil unions treat outsiders.
