I'm just coming from a different post about how most of you guys (and gals) have over 250+ games.

How many of those games are absolute crap?

Im guessing that not a huge percentage of your collections are actually worth playing.

Me personally, I only try to buy the best and what I like.

How can you guys (and gals) have so many bad games and not get rid of them?!

:?:

they have fond memories.... I guess

Me...... I like how they look and it shows a great presentation of your collecting skills and organizing manner.

Negative Zero, I often ponder the same exact thing!! I have like.... oh... 4 games that I keep for sentimental reasons, 7 games that I keep because of their replayability and goodness, and absolutely no junk games LOL. I rent a lot of games, but I only buy the best of the best. I can't understand how people have so many games haha

Having a large library allows me to see what was done with certain aspects of titles. I will admit to having some stinkers, and I'll just run down some of them, and why I've got them:

HSX: Hypersonic.Xtreme (PS2): I'm huge into the futuristic racer, and with very few exceptions, I get them all (Kinetica is the only one that comes to mind right now). I was excited to see this game that got decent European launch reviews, only to find out that the US Port of it was half baked at best.

Shaun Palmer's Pro Snowboarder (PS2): I like the THPS games, and this one was on sale for $10 at Best Buy at a time when current generation games rarely hit that price point. I was just disappointed.

Bubblegun Kid (Rascal) (PS1): I bought this from Buy-Rite because it was $20 and came with a free action replay device. It was like I spent $20 on the AR, and got a virtually unplayable game to go along with it to test the functionallity of the unit.

Fighter's Megamix (Game.com): It was dirt cheap, but it is also unplayable. Between the delay in play and the lag that the camera makes in the pseudo 3D just make it a miserable experience.

Kasumi Ninja and Ultra Vortek (Atari Jaguar): The worst two fighters ever. No ifs, ands, or buts. They came packaged in a bundle I bought, but I will still play them every so often just to see how bad they really are.

If you look at my collection, you'll see how much crap I really have, but I keep it around incase there's points that I want to look at.

Sometimes, I actually go out of my way to pick up a particularly bad game just for laughs (Drake, Charlie's Angels, Superman 64, etc.). It can actually be fun if you go into it with the right attitude. Besides, don't you want to see for yourself just how bad it really is? Just because XYZ professional reviewer says such and such about a particular game (good or bad) doesn't necessarily make it so.

I agree with you , i never listen to what reviewers say. but how many of us actually have the time to sit there for hours and Play game just to see ho wbad it is, I know I do at times, but not the time it takes to get through all of those games. Thus i have to be selective in what i play and how I spend my cheapassmoney.

The market is being flooded with garbage and I fear that ppl are actually playing some of these things thus resulting in even worse sequels.

IMO, most all of the games in my collection are good games. There are a few stinkers in there, but I don't run out and buy a crap title just because it is really cheap.

According to IGN, between my 283 games, I have an average rating of 8.1. 77 of the 283 are rated 9 or higher. I'd say thats pretty decent. The stinkers I do have were either dirt cheap or were in a genre I really like.

without having shitty games...how can you truly appreciate how much work was put into a really great game? you must first experience the shitty ones...that will then give you a new found respect for so-so games, as well as a punch in the roof of respect for the great ones

don't ask why i dont have any older systems....i ignorantly gave away my genesis system with about 50 games to my nephew when he was about 3 yrs old and i ignorantly sold my n64 with over 30 complete games on ebay a few years back for a wee bit of money that i thought at the time was a lot....as for the nes system and well over 50 games that i grew up with along side my brother and sister, with the exception of half of them being thrown away for being bad children, a lot of them were stolen by my sibling's friends and a lot of them had a bad accident with soda....i have a super nintendo still, but i bought it right before i lost a lot of interest in gaming (due to being young and having a lack of funds)
i bought it right before i lost a lot of interest in gaming (due to being young and having a lack of funds)
Lost interest?! BLASPHEMY!

i agree with the OP, i just can't understand why people keep huge collections of games. something that actually boggles my mind are those who buy games just to stockpile them, not to actually play. or buy them games just to put em in a queue of games to play thats already exceeding like 10+ games.

nothing against those people that do that ofcourse, this is just imo, and everyone has their own style. but whenever i go out to buy a game, its usually only if i'm absolutely certain i'm gonna love playing it. i also usually dont buy more than one game at a time till i'm done with the last one and usually sell off all the really old games that i dont plan on playing any more so i can buy a new game.

its not that i'm poor or can't afford to buy games so i HAVE to sell of old ones... but imo keeping stacks and stacks of game cases around looks really ugly in the house... my collection of games probally consists of like 5 gamecube games and like around 10 ps2 games.

my pics don't look ugly

one of the reasons that i started buying more than one game at a time was because of a few things....mostly because a lot of games become so hard to find, that if you wait too long to buy it, you'll never be able to experience it without blowing a crap load of money on it...and secondly, with the insane clearances, such as the CC sale...its hard to say, "no" to 8 games for the price of one...add with that what i originally said with those games becoming rare...and then i pee pee in my pants

I think I have the largest collection of anyone here, and I will say that the amount of crap games depends on what systems the majority of your games come from. For modern systems, it's about 1 to 1, so it's pretty wide.

But I've grown to love crappy games. Nothing brightens my day like popping in a horrible game. And sometimes I actually like them. Superman: Man of Steel for Xbox, for example. Critics hated it, but I found it pretty good. I don't understand the haterizing of it.

Sometimes a game is so bad that is actually fun. It's also a personal thing, especially when it comes to classic titles. The nostalgia outweighs the actual "quality" of the game. In my case, for example, one game I remember is The Little Mermaid on NES. Not the greatest game, but it was kinda fun and I liked playing it when I was a kid.

There's nothing wrong with liking/loving a game that received low reviews. If you like it, then enjoy it and don't let reviews sway your opinion.
whenever i go out to buy a game, its usually only if i'm absolutely certain i'm gonna love playing it.
If there were more people like you, Gamestop and EB Games likely wouldn't have had to get rid of the return policies on new games. Of course, they would still have had people scamming the system by beating games and then asking for a full refund (because they didn't "like" it), essentially using it as a free rental, so I guess there isn't a clear answer here afterall.
the little mermaid is one of my favorite games from back then...seriously...that and the lion king on genesis were my favorite games to replay
I was always a huge fan of the Aladdin game for Genesis.
Robin Hood Defender of the Crown, Gladius, Dark Cloud 2.....Im gonna stop here before I vomit.
Hey, I have a special excuse for owning every version of this game and any other Cinemaware title. So those don't count against my library's average.

Plenty of people liked Dark Cloud quite a lot. Individual taste can't shoot that one down. Gladius has pretty positive reviews as well.

Exercising your personal taste for your own collection is one thing. Using as the sole point of judgment of somebody else's collection is just insupportable snobbery.

My collection is pretty large but the average rating is quite decent, in my opinion. The list isn't terribly complete and up to date but the majority of it is covered: http://users.ign.com/collection/epobirs

Some of what I had in the past is gone. I foolishly sold off my TurboGrafx/PC Engine library and hardware. Someday I'll pick up a Turbo Duo and reacquire some of the beeter items. I also cashed in most of my Sega Genesis games and the more valuable SNES titles.

The collection grew for amny reasons. First and foremost, because I could. I've been a CAG far, far longer than this site has existed. I was finding deals in the days when the SNES was recently launched that let me buy 10 games, sell six of them, and keep the rest for free, or just a few dollars each, or sometimes a profit. When you have a deep interest in the industry itself and the creative process behind the games, it only makes sense that you'd want a large range of them at hand to document what had gone before, for good or ill. When your average cost per game in an era of $60 to $70 SRPs is only $20 or less you can be indulgent.

Do I have some turkeys? You bet, and some of them are magnificent in their awfulness. I have them for the same reason I have a large collection of Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes. It is one thing to say a gem or movie was terrible but a far better thing to have proof immediately at hand.

The average IGN score of my 350+ games is 7.9 and over half of those have an IGN score of 8.5 or better. While I don't base quality purely on review scores, I'd say that based on that most of my games are pretty good. Like others I won't lie and say I don't have some crap, but I like to make my own decision on whether a game is crap or not. I paid $5 for alot my crap games so that's just like renting them. I would rather spend $100 on buying 20 crap games and own them all then spend $100 on renting 20 crap games and have to return them to the video store.

umm excuse me? i may have read that wrong but are you accusing me of returning games that i just "didn't like"? cause i've never returned games just cause i "didn't like" them. if i get a game that i previously thought was gonna be good but turned out to be bad i live with it. but no i dont return games just cause i "didn't like" them.

i'm just talking about some of the pics i've seen of other peoples' collections where theres hundreds of games piled in cardboard boxes and stuff all scattered around a room/basement. i'm pretty sure theres plenty of good examples out there with neat and organized shelves that look cool.

and yea dude i used to play "the lion king" on the genesis over and over again. it was probally my faviorate game back in the day (i like mastered that little mini game where pumbah had to catch bugs timone was throwing... i loved playing that).

I've used this example before. Why collect baseball cards of crappy players? Because it's a collection. It's no different than collecting coins, movies, etc. They're just video games.

You don't have to finish every game you play. I buy a game, pop it in, if I enjoy it, I'll keep going with it. The rest go on the shelf and get brought out as needed. If you can get a game for a $1, why not? Keep in mind that not everyones collection is filled with new stuff and they haven't paid $50 a game. If I had to play through every game I own, it wouldn't make it. It's very useful for refrence purposes, comparisons, etc.

Bad games? Sure. I occasionaly get in the mood for some truly brutal stuff like Total Recall on the NES. Maybe a friend will come over and he might want to play something off the wall. It's great to say "Yeah, I've got that one."

Also, why does it have to look good? Mine are all organized, alphabetical for quick acess, etc. Some people just don't have that much space. I'm very fortunate too. Are you saying that people who live in a small apartment aren't allowed to collect because it doesn't look good?

I love the Dead or Alive series so much that I own every title they published with the exception of the staurn import. other than that , i've gotten every title on release day and have been 100% sa"TITS"fied;)
8.6 average of 167 games. You guys have shitty collections.
yeah, but i could easily take 300 games out of my collection and have a higher rating then you and more games...so =;

No, I was saying that plenty of other people did this, which caused Gamestop and EB Games to discontinue their no-hassle return policy on new games. If more people had been taken the time to do their research before laying their money down (like you did), the no-hassle return policy might still be in effect. That was all I was saying.

That's not the point. Those 300 games soil your collection. Stop buying every crap game you see.

I have 366 games with an average score of 8.7. So, no my collection isn't crap. I would say that I have maybe 2 games that are crap, but one of them I moderately enjoyed (Enter the Matrix).

I love gaming that is one reason I have a large collection of games.
I don't have a record of my collection but believe me it is huge.
I would say in and around 500 different titles for SMS, SNES, N64, NEOPC, Xbox, GC, DC, PS1, PS2, GBA, GBC, GB.

Plus if I would have never sold off my 2600, Genesis, NES and Turbo Grafix I'd have even more.

One thing for sure is I'm a CAG and I always try to get games for a cheap as possible. A Devil Customer. I love to pricematch, I love clearance sales.

I do not like to trade in games to EB or Gamestop unless there is a deal of some kind so I do not loose money. Example 2 for $10 at EB. I traded in my cost of $25 (Crappy Games TRU & CC) and ended up with $38 in trade. But I find most of the time when you trade in games you get ripped. So why trade in a game I paid $5 for and get a whole .50 in return? I might as well just keep it or trade it to a friend or CAG.
and most of the time if EB is not going to give you anything for it most CAGs don't really want it either, but I have done some nice trades with the community. :D

I just bought today Gottlieb Pinball Hall of Fame Xbox for $10
and Last week I bought Bad Boys Xbox for $10 which I know is crap but it looks like it would be a fun game to laugh at and play.

One example of a game I recently bought and was completely dissappointed in was Goldeneye Rogue Agent.
I got it for $30 and traded it in for $24, a loss I can handle.
If I paid full price though I would have kept the game.

I don't think I have a bunch of crap games in my collection most of the games I have I consider to be 7.0 and higher. I do have a few really bad ones but really not that many and the bad ones I do own I did not pay even close to retail value for.

My main point is I love to play video games and have since I was very young. I've been playing games for 22 years now and I don't think it will stop anytime soon.
I have 366 games with an average score of 8.7. So, no my collection isn't crap. I would say that I have maybe 2 games that are crap, but one of them I moderately enjoyed (Enter the Matrix).
Good. At least I konw I'm not the only one that won't buy crap regardless of price.
http://users.ign.com/collection/evilmax17

Average IGN rating: 8.3

Most of my games are pretty good.
Same for me. yea, there are a bunch of low scorers, but I don't buy games that are bad. I can get my moneys worth out of any game on my list. any of them.

But crappy games can be fun. I own Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness. That game sucked! But I love it for some reason. I also own many DBZ games. Most of those are crap(except the Super fami ones I own). But I love em. Games can be crap, but you can still like them.

"Crap" is relative. As long as you enjoy the game, you're in good shape.

Case in point: I enjoyed Glover (for a while), but not very many others did.
Is it free to create these list on IGN?

I have one on 1up .com, it list most of the games I could remeber as I sat here at work.
1up's collection interface is a joke compared to IGN's. You'll be amazed at how much easier it is to compile a list of your games.

I personally have an 8.0 average out of my 750+ games. That's misleading, though, as IGN didn't score games like Mario All-Stars, Super Metroid, or Tecmo Bowl. I tend to have a higher quality title ratio for older systems -- SNES, anyway. I'd say I've gotten a good 1/3 of my collection due to being a journalist (i.e. free), which is why I have some of the games I do (ECW on Game Boy Color, Mary-Kate & Ashley PSone, Astro Boy PS2).

So, why don't I just get rid of them? I kind of have issues with profitting from games I received free. That doesn't mean I don't do it, but I try to avoid it. It's not like a lot of them are worth much, anyway. Also, once you start compiling a collection, it's tough to delete entries. However, my surplus cabinet for PS2/Xbox/GC games that don't make it onto my shelves (room for about 230) is filling up, so I'm going to be doing some clearing-out -- partly to fund my PSP.

Also, some crappy games are valuable or rare, making them worth keeping. Others, I just like to have. Slam City for Sega CD sucks, but I wouldn't deprive myself the joy of hearing Scottie Pippen's awful rap. Simspons Wrestling is one of the worst games I ever played, which makes my sealed copy sentimental. Speaking of wrestling, I try to collect as many wrestling games as I can (I was a pro wrestler on the independent scene before moving out to LA), and some received bad scores.
