Most of the free spyware programs are *not* 'spyware'. AdAware and Spybot are free, legitimate antispyware. However, they are not updated as often as they should be, and don't catch as much as they used to [recent tests showed they only caught about 60% of spyware, combined.]
Download and try either Giant/Microsoft AntiSpyware, which is currently the 'best' antispyware program; if that doesnt' work, [my computer didn't like it], try Counterspy. Counterspy is payware, but you can try it for 15 days.
I have noticed a lot more popups are sneaking through Firefox, for some reason, but still, there's a whole lot less than if I were using MSIE.
Kayden's advice is good--see what is running on your computer. Check Add/remove programs for anything that 'you' didn't put there.
And, of course, plug your router back in. EVERYONE on the net, esp. broadband, should have a router/firewall, preferably hardware, software at the minimum.
I just downloaded th latest version of Ad-Aware so we'll see if that helps. Is Microsoft the best because it has real-time scanning? In this article
http://www.download.com/Spyware-Obstacle-Course/1200-2023_4-5143404.html?tag=navtop Ad-Aware recieved first place so I figured that was the best. And I always check my Add/Remove Prgrams for problems and I wil try Kayden's solution just the part about searching through my processes) But there's this shortcut for "PartyPoker" that keeps showing up on my desktop no matter how many times I delete and for the hell of me I can't fin dthe source. Gah! People who make spyware/adware should be kicked in the balls on an hourly basis.
