Dan Wheldon dies in Indy crash

nasum

CAGiversary!
33 years old. Went airborne in a ridiculous crash and hit the fence upside down and backwards.

The rest of the race has been cancelled and the drivers that made it through the crash are goung to do a 5 lap salute.

Damn. I hope this is a reminder to everyone who races that the cars aren't indestructible. There are a lot of young drivers in NASCAR who walk in thinking they are going to walk away from everything and a wreck like that proves that isn't always the case.

I actually watched the race on ABC today because the points race was tight between Dario Franchitti (or however you spell his name) and Will Power. Dario said in an interview they should of never raced here and it's true. 34 Indy sized cars on a small as a track as this was waiting for a disaster and well sadly it happened.

Dan Weldon was a heck of a good driver and he will be missed by all. He was this years Indy 500 winner and well it's sad to see him or any race car driver go. No matter how safe you make racing, it's still one of the most dangerous sports out there. My prayers are with his family who I feel just terrible for.

It's not the size of the cars, nor the track, it's the shear speed these cars are capable of, combined with open-wheel racing...the slightest touch and well, we saw what happened.

They need to slow these cars down if they are going to race on ovals. Personally, they should race road courses only.

That would mean the Indy Racing League would have to stop racing at Indy.

Yeah your totally right about that. 200+ mph on an oval is just asking for it. Still though during the race, like half the field in the first 12 laps if not more were like almost neck and neck like a fucking Talladega Nascar race. It was crazy and personally not something that should of happened.

I agree they either need to slow the cars down or only race on road courses (except for Indy but that track is big enough to support 3-4 wide racing anyway). There is no reason they should be driving 200+ mph on a 1.5 mile race track, and with how easily the Indy Cars just get destroyed by hitting the wall is pretty bad.

Nah, while it wouldn't be the traditional oval, IMS does have a road course.

The Vegas track needs to be taken out of the season tbh. The banks at Indy are high enough that it's difficult to walk up them. Not so much in Vegas. It's too easy to get flat...

My cousin works for the Indianapolis affiliate for ESPN Radio. He was a big fan of his ans actually had the pleasure of meeting Dan several times during his tenure there. From all accounts that he's told me, Dan was just an awesome dude to be around. My cousin has quite the collection of photos with him, some which he's shared today on his personal Facebook page.

He actually went to Vegas for the weekend with today's race being the big hurrah of his vacation. He never expected to see his favorite racer suffer such a sad fate. To say the least, he's very torn up about the whole thing.

Very sad. But that's the risk involved with something like this.

As guys like Tony Kanaan and Dario Franchiti say, Death hangs over you everytime you hit the track. They also call racing and boxing true sports since death plays a factor. The rest are just a game. Wheldon was an amazing driver and to this day, i have no idea why the Panther Team never wanted to pay him.

R.I.P Dan and condolences to the rest of your family.
