Not sure if this should go here or on the "other deals / requests" forum, but I'm looking to see if anyone knows of a good deal on a PS3 replacement drive. I'm contemplating getting a 7200 rpm drive (like the WD Black line) but not sure if I'll really see a performance boost to justify the increased price (I am a cheapass after all). Right now I'm still using my stock 60Gb and am at about 5Gb left; since I'm going to be grabbing Infamous and something else I will need a drive replacement.

Any suggestions?

Correct. I got a 7200 rpm high performance HDD and it only improved loading times/save times by about a second or two. It's not worth the price difference IMO.

Also, a 7200 rpm drive will typically produce more heat than a 5400 rpm. This might increase the probability of getting a YLOD.

I thought this was true as well but have recently read that since the 7200 rpm HDD never gets that fast (the PS3 will only use the HDD at 5400 rpm), that the 7200 rpm HDDs are actually a bit cooler. *shrug*

Good to know about the speed, that'll save me some bucks. Anyone know of a good deal on reliable 5200 RPM drives? I'm thinking 500Gb to get me through.

500Gb should give you plenty of space. That's what I went with. I bought a Western Digital 5200 RPM 500Gb drive two years ago, and I haven't had any problems what-so-ever.

Yep. This is what I did.
I turned in a Red Dead Redemption and Gran Turismo 5 for $60 at Bestbuy. And used the gift card on the 500GB hard drive. Had to have them price match their online price because they were charging $74.99 instore. ($59.99 online) Should last awhile.

WD5000BEVT is a popular choice but some people experience lagging on a PS3 due to its aggressive head parking. Apparently, an utility called WDIDLE3 could possible disable the idle timer and eliminate the lag.
