Alright, so I have the tournament tomorrow, and I don't know if I'm affirmative or negative or not until I get there. Any help is MUCHO appreciated. The topic is:

"Continued space exploration is vital to the advancement of civlization."

Here's what I have so far:

Debate: Negative Argument

Resolved: Continued space exploration is vital to the advancement of civilization.

Value: Economy
Criterion: Health and Education
Contention 1: Money spent on space exploration could be better spent.
Sub point 1: There are lots of people who are below the poverty line HERE IN THE USA and yet we’re spending millions of dollars every year on research that has very low yield results.
Contention 2: Space exploration is “low-yield” research.
Sub point 2: There have been few real “breakthroughs” from the research done in space, we can learn a lot more from our planet itself than with our current space technology.

Debate: Affirmative Argument

Resolved: Continued space exploration is vital to the advancement of civilization.

Value: Technology

Criterion: National Security

Contention 1: NASA helps discover new compounds and life forms.
Sub point 1: New information about our world can help lead to advancements in all other fields.
Sub point 2: Information on new bacteria can help find cures for the diseases that currently plague our world.

Contention 2: NASA’s rocketry development (past and current) is essential to national security.
Sub point 1: Rocket technology is used in missiles which can defend our nation from nuclear and biological missile attacks from other unfriendly nations.
Sub point 2: Rocket development is also leading to advances in engines, fuel cells, and renewable resources.

Contention 3: We learn more about our planet by learning about our solar system.
Sub point 1: Information on the structure of our planet can help us know how much “abuse” our world can take.
Sub point 2: If we can find a new planet with the same atmosphere as Earth, we would have a abundance of new resources, new homes, and new life forms.

I'd change this to: ...we can learn a lot more studying earth than we can from space exploration.

Implying our current space technology isn't very good leaves open the possibility that simply giving NASA more money to develop new technology might fix things.

Debate: Affirmative Argument

Contention 1: NASA helps discover new compounds and life forms.
So space exploration has resulted in the discovery of new life?

Sub point 1: New information about our world can help lead to advancements in all other fields.

I wouldn't make this a subpoint but rather a conention on its own, a number of things developed by NASA or for space exploration have found other uses. It is always easier to justify spending billions of dollars when you can name a few ways it has affected everyone's lives.

Alright I had the debate today, I did ok for my first time.

1st Round - Auto-loss (damn girl double registered in events and showed up 45min early to debate and DIDNT TELL ME so I got a loss for NOT SHOWING UP when she did :'(

2nd Round - Lost by a bit, but not unexpected, first time so naturally I'd lose.

3rd Round - I raped the snot outta the girl, she got donkey punched!
