The national debt is now $13 trillion, since Barack Obama took office the debt has risen by $4.9 billion per day, almost 3 times the daily average of $1.7 billion during the Bush administration. That means every citizen currently ows $180,000.

I wonder how the 'liberals are trying to help, and republicans are irredeemable' crowd will use to try and excuse this.

Too easy

- Cleaning up after Republican administrations is expensive
- A ton of the increases are automatic carryovers from the previous budgets

He is definitely spending like a conservative though. If he was a real liberal, we'd be seeing tax increases.

And the response to that is too easy:

So to clean up a recession that we got into by buying things that we couldn't afford, we are going into debt we can't afford? nice thought out plan.

no matter what happens obama will get a pass on the economy (at least for his first term) because it was "bush's fault".

You listen to Dave Ramsey, don't you? ;)

Er, um, no.

If we get a double dip recession this summer, Obama will both houses of Congress and be paralyzed like Clinton in 1994.

If the recession persists to the 2012 election, Sarah Palin could beat him.

If the recession makes way for a dotcom style bubble, he'll get a second term like Clinton. Hopefully, he can keep it entertaining by getting a BJ FROM a Jew.

Talk about having to pick between the lesser of two evils.

On the bright side, perhaps that face-off would get more people voting for third party candidates...

Obama is called a tax and spend liberal. He should do that first part for the label to fit. All he's done is spend, but he hasn't raised taxes.

The point of a president is polarization. A third party candidate wouldn't be allowed to win.

They could win with Jesus on our side.
That's true.

The assumption of voting for a candidate is so that your candidate can win.
Nada. It shouldn't be a popularity contest.
You vote for a candidate because you believe them to be the best individual for the job.

No one was saying it should be a popularity contest.

People who vote for Nader don't vote for him because he's popular, but because they think he's the best individual for the job. Voting for them implies you hope they win.

If you had to choose between horrific unemployment numbers and large debt which would you pick?

I think the closest we'll get to that is letting the Bush tax cuts on the upper classes expire.

Maybe if he gets a second term we'll see some true tax increases when he has nothing to lose.

I love how liberals think their party doesn't blow money like it's going out of style guess what...both liberals and conservatives spend way more then they really should. Have you seen how much health care is really going to cost? In any case, I wouldn't point fingers at conservatives at this point...theirs a whole new budget thats been in place for quite a while now. You really can't just blame one side or the other at this point. When it comes down to it our politicians need to stop spending a crazy amount of money. In any case, both liberals and conservatives can bank on one thing...when the shit hits the fan they can tax our asses to clean up their mess. No one really cares about the American people (liberals or Conservatives) everyone is going to try to go after their own political agendas. It's really rather sad.

Increasing taxes may very well be necessary, but not simply because of health care.

And even if it was strictly because of health care costs, I'd rather my increased tax dollars be spent of health care for people who need it than two wars which have no end in sight and they we'll most likely never truly "win."

You can't actually pay off the debt. If you were to, there would no longer be any money, and the economy would die. Even if you were to pay off a couple of trillion, it would have a catastrophic effect on the economy, and the money supply. Dollars are first created by the Federal Reserve when they loan someone money. Their largest creditor, by far, is the US Government. If the Federal Government pays back 1 trillion to the Federal Reserve, the monetary supply is decreased by 1 trillion (or up to 10 times more, because of the effects of fractional reserve banking), as that money is taken out of the economy. The only way to stop an economic collapse, would be to loan out that 1 trillion to someone. Through this, the debt would only be shifted around.
