I know a few have had problems with their Xboxs. Sadly I knew it was only a matter of time, but my Thompson is finally breaking down, I've been getting more and more DDEs. I did some reasearch, to survey my options, with the upcoming release of NFL 2K5, I need my Box.

Option 1 -- Pray to the evil empire to replace my drive or xbox, with an excessive number of long and frustrating phone call..

Option 2 -- Open up the thing, pray to god the loose power supply that holds power doesn't shock and kill me. Try to clean the laser, adjust the Potentiometer (pot) on the laser.

Option 3 -- Open the shit up again, try not to die, then replace the drive with another 100 dollar or so drive.

Option 4 -- Buy a new Xbox.

Failure is not an option.
Anyone go through this and fix it, anyone get any luck from microsoft, anyone have any more information on any of the tasks , etc. Or please just hold me.

i havent had this trouble yet and hope i never do...(obviously)...but id first take it up with microsoft (probably wouldn't do anything, but who knows)...then id wait for another price drop (then again, i have other systems to hold me off with 'til then)....when the xbox hits $99.99, i'd probably pick it up again...depending on how bad i really needed it....i might just wait 'til the nextbox comes out (as long as its backwards compatible...and it better be)

I stand by my posts in similar threads. MS won't do shit unless you pay them. Options 2 and 3 are worthwhile if you're comfortable working on electronics. I reccomend trading it in at EB and getting a new one. EB sends them back to MS to get them refurbished, so the drive will be fixed before someone gets screwed with it, plus if you get one of the bundles, most EBs will let you trade in the pack in game to get a few more dollars off as well. My local EB manager explained the refurbished thing to me, and this last weekend I watched employees at another EB open up a bundle for someone else with the same problem so he could trade in the pack in game.

I had the same problem....I had an XBOX that was giving me DDE every once in a while...but it was still very playable...but still pissed me off.

Anyways, I went out and bought the HALO XBOX for $150....it was marked that at TRU one night, so I saved $20....

Then, I sold my extra copy of HALO, since I already had it for $25...

Then, I sold my OLD XBOX for around $100...I know, crazy...without and controller either.

So, my total cost

XBOX: $159 (tax)
HALO: -$25
XBOX: -$90 (I think there was a commission for this)

TOTAL for a NEW XBOX: $44, and I essentially got the S-controller too, since I didn't get rid of my old controllers.

Not too shabby for a green box ;)

I did this... EB gave me $80 for my thompson drive xbox. So then I got the Halo Ed Xbox (definitely worth it IMO). The xbox works great and even plays some of my scratched up DVDs that used to not work.

yeah my drive tray looks different than my old thompson... that isn't to say that thompson didn't make my drive... but it is different thank the lord.

if you want your Xbox fixed cheap, follow the following directions:

1. Call MS. They will tell you it costs 100 dollars to fix the system. Tell them that is not good enough.

2. call the Better Business Bureau. After telling them of your problem, MS usually takes 1/2 off the cost of repair.

you can repeat steps 1 and 2 as much as you like. Sometimes they will knock it down cheaper or even fix it for free, but most of the time 50 is the best you are going to get.

Wow really... what do you tell the Better Business Bureau to get them to act? You think this could work for other services?
