Does Anyone have a list of BDs that are being double dipped?

I just got a bluray player, so im going to buy a lot of movies now. I dont want to buy any movies that are going to get a new re-release with a lot of sweet extras that ill miss out on.

The LOTR Trilogy even though it's not out yet is going to be double dipped I believe. First, they are releasing the theatrical versions and then they are going to release the director's cuts a couple of months after. Watchmen has been double dipped. I didn't care much for the extras in the newer version so I just bought the first one that came out. Terminator 2 has a ton of editions. The SkyNet edition is the best one of the bunch I think. That's all that comes to mind really.

Already done double dips:

Goodfellas
Casino Royale
No Country For Old Men
Stargate
Terminator 2
Watchmen

I'm sure there's more, though that's all I can think of off-hand.

Bourne Movies will be combo discs when they come out in singles but i dont know if the features will be any different and Harry Potter movies are being double dipped,

Already double dipped:

300
Troy
Full Metal Jacket
I Am Legend
Stranger Than Fiction
Natural Born Killers

And Dodgeball has unrrated and rated cuts that are separate purchases.

What's the difference

Smallville could double dip once the series ends... seasons 1-5 are dvd-only, and from what i hear the blu-rays for 6-8 haven't impressed (especially 6), so a new transfer isn't too big a stretch.

Star Wars seems likely to roll multiple releases when it comes out, and who knows if the Blu-Ray 3-D hoopla will cause some titles to re-tool around the technology (new Disney/Pixar films like Up & Toy Story 3 show 3-D theatrically).

With LOTR? The directors cut adds on about another hour to the last movie. The theatrical versions are garbage compared to the director's cuts. Watchmen has tales of the black freighter in the newer version and I think the difference in T2's is just the special features/quality.

A ton is added to each of the films, not just the last one.

And yeah, it's really the only way to watch the Trilogy IMO. Especially if you're a fan of the books. But even if not, the additions really flesh out a lot of things better.

Agreed. There is just so much more to the extended versions.

Released once, then released again later, usually with more features and higher picture and/or audio quality.

Are the WB titles coming out in a few months adding anything? I saw Goodfellas anniversary and some other non-anniversary ones with shitty looking cases.

You are thinking of season 5 on HD-DVD actually. Season 6 looks pretty good.

Also Grumpy Old Men is getting double dipped as WB is re-releasing it in a two pack with Grumpier Old Men. Funny part is the two pack is planned to be the same price as the individual release of Grumpy Old Men.
Eventually...almost all will be re-released, just like DVDs
QFT!

Deleted scenes, director commentary, outtakes, etc. Are all things that can be added little by little to extend its a film's life cycle.

Yeah, the real key is whether the current version is good enough for you.

As long as it has a solid transfer, and is the best version of the film (i.e. the extended version of LOTR) then I'm good. I barely ever watch extras, and could always just Netflix a new version if I wanted to watch the extras once.

Anyone know anything about a rumored Quantum of Solace director's cut? Not that the director was any good, but a longer movie with more developed characters and storyline would only help.
Becareful of DieHard Trilogy.... the boxset is PG13 on latest movie I believe... instead of the unrated version.
Indeed it is. No, yipee kai yaee m**thf**kers.

The Steelbook editions don't really count. It has been double dipped though, the newest release with the giftpack supports another audio method...I forget which one.
Superman Returns -- not marketed as a double dip since it was just an audio upgrade to Dolby TrueHD.
Same situation happened with The Fifth Element.

The Fifth Element had a visual upgrade though, and although it was not marked as a remastered version, it was widely known amongst Blu-Ray fans.

I wouldn't count on that going forward. Netflix didn't always carry the new versions of every release on DVD (an example escapes me at the moment), and with stuff like Terminator: Redemption, they are starting to have a neutered version for rental. I expect that trend to accelerate.

When you can eventually get most BD in the $10-$15 range now it looks like, it isn't as big of a deal as it could have been.

BR is still pretty early in its lifecycle and is really just now becoming popular among the masses. That tells me that pretty much EVERY title released up until now is a potential double dip or "special edition" opportunity in the future as BR continues to gain market and mind share.

I recently read in an article that starting sometime in quarter one that all of Warner Brothers New releases will come packaged with a digital copy& DVD with the Blu-Ray. I don't know what they mean by new releases, if that means recent theatrical releases when they come to blu-ray, or all upcoming releases including catalog titles geting a new release.
Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair comes to mind, but who knows when that's gonna be released.
Probably never. Possbily if there is a 3rd Kill Bill. They've talked about that for years now.
About damned time. I've held off on getting that because of the crap transfer. Hopefully, this one will look much better.
Me too. I thought the DVD version was pretty good. Disappointed that the picture quality on the blu-ray was only slightly above DVD quality.
I believe Cars has been tripled dipped!!

They can quadruple dip for all I care. They haven't improved the later version enough to warrant a re-buy or make me regret buying the original release.

This would be the case for all the Pixar/Disney stuff. Unless they start releasing them in 3D version later.

Yeah, I held off on ever picking up Kill Bill on DVD because of the rumors. I didn't bother waiting any more with the Blu Rays. The picture quality is outstanding, so I'm happy with it.

I may double dip if the whole bloody affair every comes out and adds a lot. If it's just the two movies edited together, with the one scene in color rather than black and white and some gore added etc. I'll probably pass. I seldom sit and watch the whole thing at once anyway due to time constraints.

Oh well. Again no big deal as I seldom ever watch any extra features. Hard enough to find time and energy to watch a movie, much less to watch extras.

I'll occasionally watch deleted scenes, but that's about it.

For those who bought a very early launch 60 GB PS3 and got Talladega Nights bundled with it, they sell an unrated version of it. Not sure if they ever sold the "regular" version that was bundled with the console. :D

Several Criterion blu-rays (the earlier ones, iirc) are reviewed as having a transfer worse than their upscaled DVD counterparts, and their BR boxes are pretty bare-bones compared to their plush DVD packages. Whether that means rereleases, I dunno, but you should compare individual reviews before buying.

That said, The Seventh Seal BR is gorgeous in every way. And for the last five or so months, it's been harder to find a store that wasn't selling all of their Criterion BR's at 40%+ off.

Amazon says that 7th seal on blu-ray is no longer available from the manufacturer.

A lot of people swarmed on the 3rd man when it was said that they lost the rights to it.

Criterion doesn't seem to double dip but it does seem to happen. I bought the Seven Samurai and then later they released a new version from an updated print.

I am going to guess that the early blu-rays from Criterion relied on masters made before high def came to the home market. They were claiming that the new transfer of the the Seven Samurai was from a high def master.

I still have the DVD version of The Killer and Hardboiled from when they had the rights. Suprised that Fox Lober hasn't released these on high def.

Any other ones besides The Third Man and The Seventh Seal that seem to be going OOP/are OOP on BR?

3rd man is the only one so far on blu-ray.

Pretty much any movie that they get the distribution rights from another US company usually points to a possibility of being discontinued down the road. As was the case with The Killer and Hardboiled. Also, Ran I think.
