Just thought people would like to know....not a deal, but it may save someone from buying the current version (although, I think it's cheap)

The one case that annoys me is the mondo deluxe edition of 'Dogma' that came out less than a year after I got the first version and for the same price. In general, though, my enthusiasm for new movies has lessened so I usually get the DVDs for under $10 or after the better version's release. Patience pays off. I've seen 3-packs recently with Donnie Darko packaged with 2 other decent movies for $20. For that price I wouldn't mind if a better version comes out later.

On a sidenote, what do most CAGs do about double dips that studios do?
I usually try to trade in the old DVD to get the Newer version, that what I did for Dogma, and Neon Genesis before the Platinum Edition.
Hmm, may have to pick it up.

Besides getting very pissed off? Like WeaponX2099 said, trade it in or else I may EBay it, depending on its resale value. I've also given a few to my younger brother, seeing how he is a broke-ass truck driver. I should just stop buying DVDs on their 1st release though.

I do not mind if it is a true upgrade, say that the first version has little to no extra stuff, and the new one is packed full of stuff. This only works for movies that have been out for well over a year. Now I hate when a company has 3 versions of it planned at the release of the first one and the stagger the releases by 6 months, and they are just trying to milk you for every last penny. The only way this works is if all are released at the same time and the consumer gets to pick the version that they perfer. That is my rant.

I hate that shit, but there are some movies that you know will get that treatment so I hold off. For example, I did not pick up either Kill Bill DVDs cause I know those will get at least 1 more release and maybe more. I hate it when you don't see it coming or when it's shortly after the original release. I can see the need to do it, but at least announce it or something. Maybe they do and I am just too lazy to search for it.

One that really pissed me off was Underworld, I bought it when it was release since I did not see it in the theater, and then 2 months later it is rereleased with bonus footage!!! Bastards, I have yet to buy the new version.

Yeah, Underworld was bad. Not that I'd ever buy the movie, but the Hellboy 3-DVD set seemed to come out mighty quick after the initial release.

Everybody that owns the original DD should stick with it. I watched the directors cut and its not that good.

The first one left everything up to your imagination to figure out... this one just threw everything at you.. i dunno. The theatrical version is alot better.

i'm waiting for the same reason. they will eventually come out with a set that includes both movies and a shitload of extras, possibly on three discs. once this comes out i will jump on it. until then, i'm staying away.

Way to talk about piracy on here.....

I sometimes upgrade to a new version of a movie....especially if the old movie was not anamorphic (since I have a WS TV). I could care less about extras most of the time.

I have upgraded a few DVDs though.

Ones off the top of my head:
Pulp Fiction
Clerks
Rounders (bascially traded old for new)
Predator
Scarface
edit to ADD:
Labyrinth (SuperBit)
Dark Crystal (SuperBit)

that's all I can think of RIGHT now

yeah it pisses me off, I got burned with buyin the original LOTR, then I had to by the extened. So from then on I waited awhile for the other 2, and the Kill Bills.

It frustrates the hell out of me, because I am such a sucker for the new super deluxe versions. I have too much of a collector mentality (not for money, just collecting).

I am upgrading:
Spider-man

Want to upgrade:
Labyrinth
Dark Crystal
Shawshank Redemption
Predator
Meet the Parents (I think there is a new version coming with the release of meet the fockers)

And I am sure tons of others. Really frustrates me that I just bought Billy Madison from Columbia House and there is a special edition coming in the end of this month. Oh well I guess it's okay, since my average for the dvd's I bought from columbia House is ~$6 per dvd.

I often check DVDtalk or the web before I buy some dvd's now, just to make sure there aren't any new versions coming. This is especially true for dvd's that have suddenly changed to pretty cheap.

Holding off on Ocean's Eleven now because I figure they will release a new version with Ocean's 12.

Oh yeah it's also frustrating when they rerelease something that isn't an improvement in all categories (ie superior picture/worse sound)

im not endorsing piracy, im not telling people to do what i do, the question was what do i do, and thats my answer.

The major difference with LotR was that it was announced long before either version came out that there would be an extended version 5-6 months later. It would be nice if that was done more often so that you wouldn't be so obviously screwed.

New Line Cinema is generally a pretty cool movie studio. Even with the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, they released 2 versions but on the same day.

Back to the original topic, I saw Donnie Darko for the first time tonight on TNT. Although it said it was edited and cut to make the film shorter, I loved it.
