I bought Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate Edition from the EA store when it was 50% off. I have been playing it for about a week. While I was enjoying the story, I felt a little lost with the controls and was curious how everyone else plays the game.

I'm playing as a Rogue Elf who uses either a bow or dagger. I just added by first point to a specialization: Duelist.

When in battle, do most people just control their main character or do you switch between characters giving orders to each? I find trying to switch difficult, but lately I will pull up the radial menu to stop the action and then switch to other characters, mainly to heal using potions or have my mage use a healing spell.

Other than healing, I usually just let my non-main characters do their own thing, though occasionally I will switch to the mage to use some specific damage spells.

I think I'm supposed to use Tactics to tell my characters how to act when not controlling them but I get overwhelmed looking at that screen and have just left the default tactics... but they never seem to heal themselves and the mage never uses potion to get more mana/spell points. Can anyone provide any tips on how to set up the tactics?

Any tips on how to play the game would be appreciated...

I just started playing this myself. You can set conditions for your mages and other characters to auto heal/use items when their health gets to a certain level. Go to the screen with your crew (right of equipment screen, the one you level up on) and hit triangle (I think) to set tactics. There you can set lots of behaviors including how they heal themselves/others. I have my healer on mostly full time healing duty (there are plenty of opportunities for attacking too) and it works out well.

So, I too am a rogue and I almost exclusively control myself. If you set your tactics/behaviors right, you should be able to be successful (and of course you may need to change these depending on the situation).

Edit - as for using myself, I usually start a battle by quick switching to my bow and flinging a few special ability arrows to weaken the tougher foes before they get close then quick switch to my daggers once my tank is surrounded.

So how do you "quick switch"? It's a pain to pull up the radial menu and select Advanced and chose weapon swap... is there a better way?

You can assign the weapon swap command to a hotkey just like a potion. So, before an important battle I may have it assigned to the back hotkey menu (hold R2).

Thanks.

Can arrows be coated with poision or other weapon coatings? If so, does it impact only 1 arrow, or all arrows for a certain duration of time, etc?

Only melee weapons can use poison coatings (which is stupid). If you coat your melee weapons it last for a small bit. You have to have the poison making skill too, I believe.

EDIT - I read this may have been patched as far as the arrows go... but I am not sure. And upon further research... no.

The prevailing wisdom on tactical potion use is to set that rule as the very first one so that it has the theoretical highest priority.

A good tip for using the non-custom tactical profiles is to cycle them each time that you level and gain a new ability and/or tactics slot as that will re-populate the slots with the most relevant entries. (so if you have a character set to 'Aggressive - Scrapper' you'd want to toggle 'Scrapper' to something else and then back again to re-populate the slots)

Play on PC! I tried the DA2 demo on my xbox 360 and the controls were horrendous. I was just not used to them. The PC controls give you so much more freedom and makes the game easier imo. In battle I always pause and issue commands to all party members, you don't have to but this is the tactical style I like to use. And the tactics menu is really important, but it does look complicated at first, probably more complicated on the 360. For healers this is very important, I usually get them to heal players
But try playing DA on PC, it's so much better
Never could play anything besides Diablo on PC, personally. Just can't do it. ;)

Never once found using the controls hard at all what the tactics were for, I use to play WoW and everyone said Clicking was bad but Raid after raid ending in top DPS proved em wrong everytime :D

PS: Never buy WoW it's bad for your health!

Uh...... thanks?

I have this sitting on my shelf still sealed 85% off target sale. It seems fun enough will probably do a run through sometime as it is 5th of my list after I complete another 4 games.
