I'm going to buy one or the other this weekend and I'm trying to make a decision not just based on games.

I will probably be modding whichever I buy to play homebrew apps.

Any suggestions on which is the better all-around value? I'm leaning towards the DS Lite right now.

For actual games, go with a DS.

For homebrew, obviously PSP.

Or you can just get both like me. :)

Seconded.
I agree as well, but keep in mind that the DS can also do homebrew.
But can the DS homebrew really compare to the homebrew available on the PSP?

I've never read into DS homebrew so I'm curious.

The DS is also easier to run homebrew on. No custom firmwares or anything, just get an M3 Simply and you're set.

I still think the DS is the far better investment on the whole, but the PSP has a few bright spots game wise worth checking out.

I would recommend both, but if I could just have one it would be the PSP. There are way more PSP games coming out I am looking forward too than DS games.

Here's what you do homie. And it's the most objective thing someone can tell you.

Open up five tabs in your browser.

One for Amazon.com
One for Gamerankings.com for the PSP
One for metacritc.com for the PSP
One for Gamerankings.com for the DS
One for metacritc.com for the DS

Look at the top 20 games on each system on each site and whichever list stands out the most to you, you get that system. Then go to amazon.com and order!
OP should know the answer posting this on DS fan forum
Really? And how many flat-out "DS!" answers has the OP gotten so far?

Very nice, I like how you had him open Amazon just so he'll be instantly ready to place his order without hesitation :)

BTW, in case the OP isn't aware: it's metacritic.com

I've had both the PSP and the Lite. Out of fear of bricking my PSP, I never did anything with it but play UMD games. I already have a GP2x, and while I don't play retro all that much, it sure is a blast when I do. The PSP allows you to go totally retro easily, and if I remember right, it can play PS1 games too. Granted, you'll need some big ol' memory cards.

There really isn't a huge homebrew scene for the DS. There are a few memorable applications, but really, the PSP outshines DS homebrew.

If your main purpose is to mod your system and use it for emulators and such, I would say go with the PSP. If you want to buy the ocassional game, however, I would argue that Nintendo's DS has a much more lucrative library, but it's all about your gaming tastes.

If he wants to play homebrew, "Whichever games you like more, and PSP has no games lawl" isn't very effective here.

Fixed that for you.

DS has a Kingdom Hearts game coming too, you know.

I don't run homebrew on my DS, and use my PSP more as a PMP anyway, so I guess I'd say PSP would be your best bet. Keeping on top of custom firmwares can be a pain in the ass, though, and actual retail games are few and far between.

You really have 2 questions to ask yourself.

1. Do you care more about real games or homebrew?
2. Which system has more games you want to play?

For homebrew, the PSP is the only way to go. For games, the DS kills the PSP for me, but your opinion on the libraries may differ. The upcoming castlevania game is the first game to remotely tempt me into wanting a PSP, but it's still not worth the $$$ just to play a remake of a game I've played before, as well as a port of it and SOTN which I've played a few times.

I own both systems, and I love both of them. Though I'm becoming more fond of my PSP since its become my portable PS2.

The DS has a great solid library and some truly great AAA titles. Battery life is great, its very portable. Most of the great games are first party, but there's no doubt that Nintendo makes great games. But there are other great games, like Castlevania, Phoenix Wright, Hotel Dusk: Room 215, and others.

The PSP is also another great system. Great LCD screen, some really impressive looking titles. It takes a hit in the battery life, but that's not much of an issue for me. The PSP lacked great games when it first launched, but its getting some great games now and in the future. Sure some of the games are just ports, but they're pretty good ports (ie. Burnout, Monster Hunter Freedom, Disgaea!).

If you're one of those people who likes playing games online (like me), the PSP is the way to go. I dislike how the online wi-fi system works for DS games (but it doesnt stop me from hating Mario Kart DS, Metroid Prime Hunters, or Pokemon).

Its hard to say which system is better, only you can decide that. Go check out the game library, go look at the system in person, see what systems your friends own. Multiplayer is great with handhelds.

i have both, go for the psp, the music play and video play is much better.
PSP is going to get games, plus u can play PSX games. and i assume youre getting the slim psp, so u can play it on ur tv too.

DS is getting zelda soon, i only really play pokemon and ff3 on it though

PSP has a good amount of games out, but the ds obviously has more.
the psp games ive been playing or have played
- jeanne d'arc, naruto, final fantasy 1 & 2, tales, metal gear PO, ratchet and clank,
PSP has games???
It sure does. ;)

Anyway, both are awesome handhelds and have their own strengths and weaknesses. My preference is PSP without a doubt, but I love the DS too. DS is mostly different types of games, while the PSP is mostly console type games (if you like them, PSP is a good choice).
I have both and I say go with the DS. I would make sweet love to my DS if I could.
To much info on that . Time to get a girlfriend;) Anyway i have both, both are great handhelds and have great games. But if you are a sports guy than its the PSP hands down

That's the main reason the game lineup on PSP hasn't grabbed my attention. I play my DS 99% of the time at home, and play it because it has stuff I can't get on the consoles (namely new 2D games).

With the PSP, it doesn't have the appeal as I'd rather play console type games on my 50" HDTV rather than a portable.

But of course, this is a strength for people who love console games and would play on the go a lot (i.e. people who travel all the time for work) as they can take their console game experience with them, plus get the home brew, the handful of quirky games etc.
