I have a brand new DS Lite which I got this morning and after charging it up, powering it on and putting in NSMB, I find a dead pixel on the lower screen.

Is this normal wear in or is this unit defective?

Advice please!

why dont people understand that ALL lcd screen are prone to dead pixels. everyone acts suprise like they shouldnt be there. the units not defective, it has an lcd screen, you could exchange it 20 times and you might get 20 units with a dead pixel.

Dead pixels will almost never go away...its possible that more will show up or you'll notice more over different colors...my advice: exchange for another one at the store you purchased it from and say "it is defective"

Only elaborate on how it is defective if they insist.

You're right of course...but a 1280x1024 LCD and a portable game system with about 400x200 of total game screen are two different things...Inherent in the technology doesn't mean its not something its your right as a consumer to take care of.

With the PSP you need to deal with it, IMO, because the screen is so big and at such a high resolution...I mean, it almost can't be helped...The odds of a flawless screen are far less unless SONY would turn them on for a day on the factory floor to check for them before shipping them out.

But with the DS you really shouldn't tolerate it...Nintendo agrees...

If your system has any dead/stuck pixels, simply send it back to Nintendo and get a new one, that's what everyone has done in the past. I assume you could take it back to the store you got it from and say it was defective.

Hmm... now I'm worried about this. I haven't picked up my Lite yet... I should probably check for dead pixels when I pick it up...

If I find a dead pixel right after I pick it up at GameStop, can I walk right back in a ask for a new one?

I must agree. I have both the PSP and DS Lite. I ended up taking my PSP back twice because of dead pixels. If I'm purchasing something brand new, it has to meet my satisfaction. You would not be expected, when buying a brand new car, to accept it with one dead headlight.

I got my lite and it has one dead pixel. It wouldn't be so annoying if it wasn't in the black area while playing a GBA game. I had 2 PSP's the first one I traded in which had 2 or 3 dead pixels. I thought it didn't bother me but my new one has none and I have to say I dig that it doesn't have any. Nintendo is really good when it comes to their systems and if it bothers you call them up. I plan on calling them sometime this week to get it swapped.

My first PSP had a dead pixel or two and i brought it back. My LIte is fine. By I do agree with if I'm buying something brand new I want it to be flawless. Usually EB/GS will excahnge for you. If not Nintendo will give you another one.

My advice is to try the store you got it from first...some times Nintendo just replaces the screen...I don't like refurbished/repaired stuff...even if the manufacturer themself fixed it...

I can understand if it is a bunch but one isn't bad. I'm sure my LCD TV has dead pixels but I haven't noticed, nor taken the time to put my eyeballs right up to the TV.

My PSP has one that shows up black only when I use Google.

My original DS has one that shows up only when I play Phoenix Wright, I believe it is a stuck pixel (red?), and it doesn't bother me.

I've yet to turn on my DS Lite, but unless it looks like a 5 year old puked dead pixels on it, I'm sure I'll be fine. :)

Try exchanging it if the pixel is in a annoying spot. My Lite is perfect but my Fat had 1 stuck pixel. It was on the side and you could only notice it during black screens so I didn't care, plus it was on a Mario Kart DS which was impossible to find for me when I got it.

I own several things with LCD screen (cell phone, laptop screen, computer monitor, 32" TV) and my DS Lite is the only one with a stuck pixel. Heck, my laptop screen is 1920x1200 and has not a single pixel awry after 2 1/2 years (yeah Dell!). If I was getting mine from a US store, I won't tollerate a dead/stuck pixel on my DS Lite. As mine's an import, I live with it. No big deal.

I sent mine into nintendo, and got it back without any dead pixels in it in less than a week.

You should do the same.

that had a 100% chance of working, compared to the return to store method which only had a 70% chance of working.. (something like that at least)

Since my ds had one dead pixel in it, I let nintendo fix it, and that is what they did.

I got my ds lite this morning at gamecrazy using the credit for the ps3 pre order that i will no longer need, since I cant afford a 600 dollar system... I came home, read this thread and turned it on and found 1 dead pixel!! after swearing up a storm i went back and tried to get it replaced but the manager of the gamecrazy wouldnt do it!!, then i remembered Strell 's post
"In any case, I'd check the store first. This is probably why I'll buy mine at Target whenever I go to get it, because their 90 day policy is pretty much set in stone."
and i also remembered that some guy in fw said alot of stores arent scanning serials, so i went to a target, got one, went back in 5 mins later and returned the gamecrazy one and got my money back and now i have no more dead pixels!!
tnx strell!!

Call nintendo and ask for an advance replacement. It wont cost you a dime and is free since you still have insureance on the system. They will send you a new system to replace the one you have, and then you send your dead pixel one back. I've done this a few times already and works great.

I have a red dead pixel right in the center of my top screen. It is really annoying, and then I have another small green pixel on the lower left corner of my top screen. I have to wait for the second shipment to come in from my store before I can replace it.

Mmmm, you are certainly welcome, sir.

I'm not entirely hot on the idea of returning your GC one to Target, but I've seen much worse on the boards that this sort of thing doesn't bother me. Additionally, it's bullshit return policies like GC's and the like that are to blame in the first place as far as I'm concerned.

Besides, maybe someone will get it who won't notice it anyway.

Word of warning: EB/GS is really screwing people over by charging $20 for one year insurance, and including dead pixels in there. Apparently, they'll only refund it for you if you have "over 13 dead pixels," unless you buy their insurance. I'm not sure how much it costs to ship your unit to Nintendo, but I'm sure it's much less than $20. I'm amazed GS/EB can even get away with such practice.

shipping is all paid by nintendo. so Nintendo = Free 1 year vs. EB/GS = $20 1 year

I also had a stuck light green pixel on my touch screen. I exchanged it at TRU. My original DS had two stuck pixels, one on each screen. I went through Nintendo for that replacement. They have a nice system where they will send you a replacement and a box to send the defective unit back. If you don't send it back within a week, they'll charge your credit card. Easy, and you're not without a machine for any time.

DAMMIT! I went to Target to exchange it again, It has perfect sides, no dead white pixels....except for the huge ass stuck red one right in the middle of the screen. Back to Target I go.

My DS Lite has no dead pixels, but I have noticed one very minor error with it... if I press down hard on the lower right corner of the touch screen, a clicking sounds can be heard and I can feel something moving just a bit. I get the same effect when I press down on the plastic white screen frame as well. I'm not sure if the screen is loose, the frame is loose, or perhaps the frame is rubbing up against the screen protector (I can't say if it made this sound before I put the protector on, since it was the first thing I did). I don't really want to try pulling the screen protector off and trying to press it because I'm worried that I'd hurt the protector in the process or not be able to apply it was well next time (I already fucked up my lower screen protector trying to reapply it this morning and had to resort to using a trimmed top screen filter) . So this clicking noise doesn't affect gameplay at all, but it makes me a bit uneasy. Has anyone else experienced this, or think I should return it, or am I just being paranoid?

yeah i have that clicking in the lower touch screen as well....

I've got a small click near the top right of my screen, but it isn't very noticable.. and I'd much rather keep my unit that is free of dead pixels and other defects than worry about a small clicking noise a device that is primarily made of plastic is making :)

My first one last night at 1 a.m. - 2 dead pixels.

Returned it today, got home - found dead pixel.

Third one was a charm - no dead pixels.

So my lite has one dead/stuck green pixel on the top of the top screen. It really doesn't bother me considering I had 60+ (yes, 60) on my old DS.

But I still might return it. Too bad the EB I bought it at is about 40 miles away so it would be a bit costly to return it. :/ I just might call up Nintendo.

I actually purchased 2 at the time, so I opened up the 2nd one and it was fine. 1st one goes back tomorrow. If they have none, gimme my cash back suckas!

How the hell do you get 60 dead pixels?

i myself got a ds lite today and found 2 dead pixels and 1 very small one. it doesnt really bother me but i do wish that they were ecspecially since one is bright green and can be very distractive

I'm exchanging mine - I have one dead pixel in the center of the top screen. It's really annoying. I have a PSP with a dead pixel in the lower right corner and I'm OK with it (not thrilled) but I can't live with one in the middle of the screen...

Yeah that GS insurance is bullshit.

::Flashback::

Andy: Hi, I'm here to pick up my DS Lite. (busts out pre-order receipt)

GS employee: Ok. Do you know about our insurance? It's only a mere $19.99 and it covers your system for a whole year.

Andy: So if I opened it and it had a scratch on it can I replace it right away?

GS Employee: No.

Andy: What if it's stolen?

GS Employee: No.

Andy: Even with a police report?

GS Employee: No.

Andy: What if a rabid Sony fan were to scratch up one of the screens?

GS Employee: No.

Andy: Floods?

GS Employee: No.

Andy: Fire?

GS Employee: No.

Andy: Well, we are in California. I should have earthquake coverage, right?

GS Employee: SSSSsssssss....no.

Andy: Dead pixels?

GS Employee: Yes!...................................................but it has to be over 13 dead pixels.

Andy: HMM...

BULLSHIT.

Honestly, I wish I knew. I got my DS Christmas 04 and it had zero dead pixels. After a year or so, about 2 or 3 pixels started to pop up. I easily rubbed these out and it fine until eventually more and more came popping up and stayed that way. They were all in in left/down/middle section of my DS.

Quick update: I played around with the system a bit last night and it's quite fun. I give it 8 Marios on initial play. But back to the comments about dead pixels, I find it unacceptable that a new system out of the box should have anything wrong with it.

For those of you who got it from Gamestop or EB and they won't return/exchange it (and you don't want to exchange it through Nintendo), calmly tell them that you will dispute the charge on your CC and keep the item and they'll get nothing. That threat has never failed me in any consumer experience.

I've got a Teal Nintendogs DS (well, it's actually mrs. shipwreck's) that has a dead pixel. I've been meaning to call Nintendo to see what they'll do about it. Maybe I should do that now that the Lites are out. Who knows, maybe I'll get lucky and they'll replace it with a Lite. (I know it's unlikely).

My PSP has no dead pixels.
look at posts #25-27
im aware of those posts because i posted there, im asking if anybody else has the same problem.

My first two PSPs had over 3 dead pixels each and finally at Target the 3rd time was a charm.

My first fat DS had a black pixel in the middle of the touch screen. Returned it and got one in perfect condition.

My DS Lite imported from play-asia had one green stuck pixel stuck right behind your kart wheel in MK DS. I sold it on eBay and got 170 dollars.

My DS lite from Best Best from yesterday has no dead pixels and I am happy.

I do find the dead pixel thing really annoying. I have a 19" LCD at home with no dead pixels and I use a MAC 19" Widescreen LCD at work with no dead pixels.

Remember our dead pixels are more important than all the people suffering around the world. We have such big problems in America... LOLZ

Nintendo has a Zero Tolerance policy concerning dead pixels. Just call them up and you will get a box to ship the DS back in, mail it out (Their dime) and within 3 days you will receive a new DS.

Seriously? I called up Nintendo to try and do this ( this is after GS refused to let me exchange my lite w/ one dead pixel) and the customer service rep told me that there was a $5 charge for the shipping. Now, I honestly wouldn't have that big of a problem with the $5 shipping but if for some reason the new DS that they send me also has dead pixels, then the cost of shipping those things back to Nintendo is going to start to add up.

Actually it won't... if the one they send you has dead pixels, you still have a 1 year warranty on it. They will let you send it in on their dime, and then send it back to you fixed up properly.

I just did the "advance return" thing myself, and fortunately the one they shipped out for $5 works flawlessly - no dead pixels. Now just need to drop the broken one off at UPS on the way home.
