DVDs on the PS3

CAGiversary!
After a little help. I just got a PS3 last weekend and so far every DVD I've put in (about half a dozen) doesn't work at all. Am I supposed to change a setting or something? I thought PS3 was supposed to play DVDs?

Cheers.

The PS3 is quite the DVD player with upscaling capabilities. Is your PS3 new? Are your DVDs commercial or burned? I've had problems playing burned DVDs on mine.

Might have to give a little more info. What exactly happens after you click the CD? How do you have it hooked up to the tv? Can you play games. Can you play downloaded movie trailers?

Thanks for the responses.

The PS3 is brand new, 80gb, purchased last weekend.
The DVDs are all new, orginals.
The PS3 has complete functionality otherwise. Games are fine, I've downloaded demos, but not movies yet.
The DVD's auto start but nothing appears on screen. The PS3 menu dissapears and I get a blue screen which is the normal reaction my tv has if there is no signal. The PS3 then becomes unresponsive. Pressing the buttons on the controller have no effect. I have to turn the console off and on again.
I'm connected through a HDMI connection - which works fine with the games.

Hmm, I have no idea what could be causing it. I've been using my PS3 as my primary dvd player since I got it at launch, and have never seen this problem. I would guess it's something in the system or video settings on the PS3 itself, but without seeing it, it would be tough to diagnose.

OK thanks. I wasn't sure if there were any default settings that I needed to change to play DVDs.

Try connecting the PS3 with a component connection and see if it does the same thing. I'd bet dollars to donuts this is a HDCP issue, which probably means the PS3 does not like what it sees on the other end of the HDMI connection. Could also be a resolution issue if you're running at 720 instead of 1080. But THANK GOD the DRM works at least!

Well I'm pretty sure you have to make sure the PS3 is putting out the signal at the same resolution your TV is displaying it at. If I recall correctly, it does not do this automatically, as I had to adjust my settings when I got my new TV.

Yeah, sounds like it's trying to switch to a resolution that your TV doesn't like. What is your TV capable of (480P/1080i/720P/1080P)?

Check your upconverting settings in the system config menus. Like others have said, it's likely either trying to upconvert your DVDs to a resolution your TV can't handle, or there is some setting in there that is out of whack.

That is what I would try. If it is just a HDCP issue you might just need a better hdmi cable.

I saw in your other post that the machine doesn't respond. The PS3 has this strange way of exiting. Try hitting O, wait a few seconds and hit right on the d-pad, then hit x. That should select the exit option even if you can not see it. If that doesn't work then you probably have bigger problem than HDCP.

Thanks for the advice, I'll check the settings. My tv is 720 so I'll try that. I'll report back.

Another thing is that you should have 480P selected on your resolution settings as well seeing most of them even though they claim will upscale will go on the 480P setting...

My question here would be will it upscale with component cables or do you have to have HDMI to even have any upscale ?

Thanks

OK, situation resolved. It was the resolution issue. It was trying to make my 720 tv go to 1080. Thanks for everyone's help.
