Earth Defense Force 2 won't install?

Wolfpup

CAGiversary!
I've never seen this before, and I don't know if it's somehow the disc, the game, yet another Xbox dying or what.

I go to install Earth Defense Force 2, and it just sits on a screen saying it's installing it. It never progresses, I can't cancel (aside from just shuting off the system), and the DVD drive I think actually spins down.

I've had a number of games where installing them does nothing-it still reads off disc and is super loud. And I've had games that just don't let you install (Crackdown under older firmware). But I've never seen this where it tells you it's installing, but does nothing.

Anyone know what's going on?

Seems I CAN launch it from disc-at least it boots to the title screen after downloading a 40MB patch, but it still just gets stuck on the install screen.

PowerUP Heroes is like this. You can play the game off the disc with no problems. But it won't install to the hard drive. And when you select to install it to the hard drive, it just sits there and practically hardlocks the Xbox (you can't even go back to the dashboard).

I know this thread is a bit old, but I wanted to put it to bed properly:

I have both games mentioned (PowerUp Heroes & EDF2), so I thought I'd install them today. Both games installed just fine.

Both of your issues have nothing to do with the game itself, but one of three issues:

1. Bad Disc. (sometimes fairly clean-looking discs are still unreadable for issues not seen)
2. Bad console. Some slims have issues with things that the phat did not. that's as simple and detailed as I care to delve.
3. Bad HDD. Highly unlikely if you have no other issues.

I have a final-model phat 360 with a 250gb official MS HDD.

ANY 360 single-game disc can install to the HDD (most XBLA compilation discs can as well, but they'll still read from and spin the disc the entire time, making the install pointless).

Just for fun, I found out the Gears of War 2 Bonus Content disc installs as well since it's coded as a game disc and doesn't play in regular DVD players.

EDF2 is Armageddon (I'm assuming he means EDF2 on the 360, so I'm assuming he's ruling out the SNES version)

I can't speak for Insect, but there's a sizeable population that cannot install the PowerUP Heroes disc. If you go to the Xbox forum or the Ubisoft forum, the threads are significant. People with multiple consoles can get it to install on one console but not the other. So that shoots down the "bad console" and "bad disc" theories (unless you're arguing that it's "just bad enough" to fail on one console. People have exchanged discs and still had it fail to install.

I FIGURED IT OUT!!
What you have to do is sign out of your xbox Live and then install. I ran across the same problem with Gears of War 2, and there is a post on that forum that suggested to sign out of Live, so I decided to give it a shot with power up heroes, and what do you know, it worked!

Whaaaaaaaat?!?

This all makes this even WEIRDER!

If I think of it, I'll try installing the game while signed out for the heck of it, but geez this is bizarre! (I quit playing it probably weeks ago, but I haven't sold it yet and I'm curious as this is all so weird).

EDIT: Oh, forgot to mention that I've got a "Slim". I guess that's there's only one? 45nm, combined CPU/GPU...geez, can't think of the model name anymore. EDIT2: Valhalla?

Right out of the box it did give a disc read error with the very first game I tried installing, which wasn't an auspicious start.
