EB making it harder to use store credit online

Apologies if this is a repost -- I haven't been in this forum much since the reformatting -- but I was tooling around on EBgames.com and, wanting to see what the total on a game was with all the discounts, mistyped my Edge card number. The window that popped up informed me, among other things, that EBgames.com no longer (or, rather, "currently does not") accept Edge card credit. In itself, that coould be viewed a long-term technical wrinkle they're trying to work out, but my local EBs no longer have gift cards with PINs on them, which is to say, no longer have giftcards you can use online.

Gamestop has functioned this way for a long time, which I've hated -- for most of the winter, I had about $100 credit at each store, and the EB credit I was able to successfully spend during B2G1, getting a lot of great games for a very modest outlay of cash. But the Gamestop credit has sat on my card, mostly because the in-store deals are rarely as good as some of the online deals that I was interested in participating in, but didn't because I didn't have the cash to spend. (Plus, when GS does have B2G1 in-store ... well, the local selection is not so hot.) Anyway: My preference for EB over GS has a lot to do with being able to spend credit online. The EB thing matters less to me now because I've spent most of my credit (I got a B&M EB to price-match the EBgames.com A/C price for a Game Boy Player), and I'm unlikely to accrue a lot more credit unless there's another TRU clearance/EB Trade 2 get $10 deal. But I'm still sorry to see EBgames.com headed in this direction.

Did they use to allow you to use Edge Card credit online? I read an FAQ for the Edge card on their site a few days ago (thinking about getting one) and it mentioned this same problem, though it made it sound like you've never been able to use Edge card credit as they say 'not yet'.

Anyway, do you get an additional 10% added to trade-ins, or is it just 10% off POed games you buy?

yes, you could use it online as recently as three days ago. there was an e-mail sent out a couple of weeks ago telling employees to put credit on girt cards only, so that probably has something to do with it.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't beef up trade-ins, but I've used it to get 10% off online, and have used its embedded credit online as well.

Uh, when did that happen? The Edge card has always been 10% off pre-played purchases and extra 10% on trading in pre-played games.

The Gamestop card has always given you +10% on trade-ins. I don't think the Edge card does, although I got my first one this year.

To clarify, the EB Edge card does NOT give 10% bonus to trade-ins, regularly.

It always gives 10% off purchases, and OCCASIONALLY gives an added % boost to trades and an added % savings to purchases, depending on promotions going on at that time.

On the other issue, they probably are not reverting to their old cards completely. Rather they have most likely run out of the new types of gift cards, with pins, and need to re-order from their home office.

I was an EB manager for close to 3 years, and ordering supplies was the worst. So it always slipped my mind too.

I guess I would have noticed this if I traded in games on a regular basis. However, I could have sworn when I first got the Edge card that one of the selling points was 10% extra credit on trade-ins (and no, it wasn't a limited promotion then because there was a different promotion for the card at the time). Then again, that was a good while back...ah well. Kind of moot since EB only gives $.50 or less credit for anything older than a month now.

That's odd, since when I traded in FNR2 last weekend, the rep put the credit on an Edge card and not a gift card. I asked to have my credit put on the existing gift card I had, and I was told that didn't work.

I noticed recently that EB puts all my credit on Gift CArds now and no longer on Edge... whereas before there was no problem... probably depends on the store?

Some have had a Edge card with a pin number . . . I haven't seen one.

I "dump" money from my Edge to a giftcard with a pin number to use it online. You lose any tax advantage this way but its not a big deal. Buy a giftcard with your Edge card instore.

So, if I buy instore with Edge money there is no tax charged. If I buy with a giftcard I pay taxes but you also save 15% with CAG15 that you can't get instore.

Don't know about now, but it used to be they'd give you a extra 10% on trade ins if you renewed your Edge card while trading in the games.

i was just saying they asked us to do that, doesn't mean anyone actually does :)
it's a lot easier just putting it on their EDGE card so that's what i do, and will continue to do

Well, the reason I was thinking of picking one up was in the hopes that I'd get an extra $3 trading in Brothers in Arms for $30 (though I figured the extra 10% may be excluded from a special like that even if it did normally apply) And if you can't use the credit online either, I don't think I'll bother with buying one.

If I can't get an online usable gift card at my EB, I'll probably just eBay it. I don't shop at the B&M enough to want credit for that.
