Ebay Canadian Duties question

First of all, I found a great calculator at:

http://www.thefinalcost.com

I had a buyer contact me saying that I've made a huge mistake by declaring his auction item $150 because there is some big increase in duties/customs/B.S. when you hit $150. The item he bought was still less than $150 even with shipping if the shipper I used made a mistake (I have the shipper at my wife's work ship UPS and they aren't Canadian shipping experts). Using the calculator above, at most the difference between what was declared and what it should have been declared was $5-$7 in extra fees he paid. He's saying he wants $25 back and acts like he's doing me a favor!

I'll be happy to refund him a few bucks if the value was declared wrong (my wife is still checking on it), but I call B.S. on this magic threshold of $150 that takes the fees through the roof.

This guy has over 100 Ebay rating so he knew what he was getting into with doing an auction with UPS shipping. And he got a hell of a deal besides that, I didn't really make anything on the auction and the same item is selling every day for a lot more than he paid.

Can anybody vouch for the accuracy of that web site and the $150 threshold B.S.? I can't find any ranges anywhere besides a $100-$200 range that either $122 or $150 would have fallen into.

This guy is a moron that doesn't understand UPS brokerage fees (or more likely was just trying to scam me). Avoid Ebay name "1six". I don't know how this retard from Quebec got his over 100 100% feedback rating.

Supposedly I can't even protect myself from negative feedback if he pulls that because I didn't specifically mention in the body of the auction that buyer is responsible for customs/brokerage, etc. Another reason why Ebay sucks. Anytime you get into little exclusions like that, you've gone overboard.

I don't think I've got much else to worry about (PayPal, etc), but who knows this guy sounds like he's conned people before. He shut up real quick when I mentioned his e-mails talking about how it was ok to send this as a gift were going to be forwarded to Ebay, Customs, etc. for resolution.

Some highlights from his communications, most time I've wasted on a lousy auction I didn't make much on (watch how the amount he asks for keeps changing, even though I never told him I was negotiating) hopefully this helps somebody:

"You have declare a 150$ value for an item that I have payd 120$"
(No, that is in Canadian dollars, you scammer)
"You use UPS sevice for company And It cost a lot more for Importation ,and You can have send it like a personnal account witch seems to fit you better and there was no fee at all , or even send it as a gift , or even HAVE DECLARE THE RIGHT AMOUNT and thats why I have to pay 65$ more now ,because the amount declared was incorect and was 150$ and over and they charge me 45% of 150$ for that ."
"there was not suppose to have fees at all here "
" I've been stunt to see that It have been confused as an XBOX at the top of it .this this is not acceptable ,all your invoice informations are filled incorectly. It making it look like you wanted me to be completly unsatisfied by making me pay non applicable custom fees. Im asking you to be responsible for all of your mistakes and partial refund me 45$ on paypal ,because i want it fair for both of us ." (the "invoice" he sent a copy of was some stupid UPS form, it wasn't anything I filled out)
"I should have paid nothing or at the maximum 15$ taxe not a penny more ." (Idiot, just UPS brokerage is much more than that on a $120 item)
"refund me an amount ,should be 50/50 , you have to consider that I actualy pay 50% more for the item when I receive your shipment .You can calculate it all the way you want ,I will say is very fair and its the less you can do.
As a very good buyer I tell you that paying 32.50$ more for shipping my item will be half less extremly desapointing). "

Love the grammar. :D

I'd ignore it as you'll probably be getting a negative if he remembers to give you feedback. I had a similar circumstance last time I opened up shipping to Canada on an auction. The buyer emailed me as soon as s/he won the item and told me that I had to mark it as a gift when shipping. I emailed back and explained that I show the exact cost that the buyer pays for the item. Ten minutes later I had an ebay dispute filed as s/he was trying to get out of the sale.

No more Canada, no more.

EDIT: And to answer your question, I would encourage you to PM Magiic as he has done a substantial amount of trading/shipping over the border. Goomba may be able to help as well.

I hope he gave up after our last communications when I reminded him even if I was going to lie about the amount for customs or call it a gift (which I wasn't about to do anyway), most of his cost was UPS brokerage fees and those can't be avoided unless I'm stupid enough to declare it for less value than I want it insured for.

And also when I said if he didn't like it I can forward our e-mails to Canadian customs, PayPal, and Ebay for resolution ;)

If he negs, he negs. I don't think he's got a leg to stand on to rip me off on PayPal.

For the record, UPS does seriously rape Canadians with import fees and taxes and such. I ALWAYS ship USPS to Canada and mark the items at the price they ended on eBay or lower. For items under $40-$45 USD the buyer typically pays no customs fees, and again using USPS does save them a lot more in fees as well.

If you listed the item as shipping with UPS, then it's really nothing against you, but definitely don't mark the items for more than the buyer paid as that's not really fair to the buyer. Best of luck, hope you don't get negative feedback.

If I remember correctly ebay has a new policy that will allow ebay to remove any negative feedback that mentions customs as the reason for negative. But I could be wrong since I don't ship outside of the US except for APO's and US territories.

Edited to add here is CP from ebay's site

Exactly my point. When I was using their templates and they say how great it is to ship internationally, they sure don't mention any required text. There template should insert this automatically, or at least link to it. OBVIOUSLY nobody is going to sell anything to Canada if we're responsible for some huge percentage of the total amount in fees.

So put it back on the buyer to clutter up the listing with redundant stuff that should be common knowledge. I guess the Ebay pros will still ship to Canada, but I'm done.
