Ebay Question

Yeah, I realized the Italy postal service was at fault and since then I refuse to ship there.

SteelSD,
Sure, Priority isn't worth what my refund was. But after having to go through all that I did, I will repeat, I have no problem if I end up with the entire refund.

You seem to ignore the fact the seller was shady at every point and refused to even be cordial every chance he was given. You can't simply be a jerk to people and then expect to fall back on some principal of universal fairness.

You seem to say "well it'd be OK if you got screwed on the shipping, but it's a great injustice if he gets screwed on the sale."

I empathize with sellers, I am a seller, I do not think a seller should be penalized the entire sale for a simple shipping issue. That said, if someone is going to open up a dispute with me as a seller it will not be because I screwed them out of the shipping.
by the way -

if a seller charges WAYY to much for shipping and doesnt do anything about it i would email him saying you want a partial refund since he ripped you off on shipping or youre going to leave a low star rating or even possibly negative feedback... that should straighten things out quickly
The problem is, some people consider actual shipping costs to be a ripoff even when it really isn't. I sold a Singstar Bundle last year. Shipping was $11.41, the buyer paid $12. I got a 1 star for shipping costs on that transaction, probably because they thought I was making a lot of money on shipping (I print my own labels that don't show the postage costs)

That is definitely a problem. People do not understand packaging costs, either. Even if I use a flat rate box or re-use something else, if it's something fragile, I need to go and buy some materials to pack it in. It isn't free.

I just read the entire thread here and I hope no one pulls this crap on me. I don't really know the cost of shipping (even though I've sold multiple games on ebay) It is usually about $2 shipping and $1.25ish for the bubble mailer. Honestly though my biggest fear as a seller on ebay is that someone will make up a story, get a full refund, and keep my stuff I sold them.

Anyways, someone asked me if I could ship to Brazil on one of the items I am selling. He has a rating of over 500 with 100% positive. I read earlier they have a bad postal system so should I just tell them no?

Slightly off topic but here's an example of ebay costs for people that don't know.

Say I want to sell a Mass Effect 2 CE on Ebay for $100 with free shipping.

MSRP for ME2 CE for Xbox is $70 + any tax. So if you paid tax you'd have to add $5-6 to the total possibly making it $75 that you spent to get the game in the first place.

So if I do a "Buy It Now" listing on ebay and someone buys the game for the $100, ebay takes $10 in fees plus at least an average of about .30 for the listing fee.

Now Paypal wants a cut of the money too so that's another $3.25

So ebay/paypal just took at least 13.50 of the $100. Then I have to ship it. I for one ship everything priority. It will probably cost me right around $6.50 average to ship to someone in the continental US. So in reality I'm out that cost too since I did a "free shipping" listing.

So to sum up I paid $70 minimum to buy the game, and sold it for $100. So $30 over the cost. Now subtract all those ebay/paypal/shipping costs and in the end I make $10 profit maximum. That doesn't include time spent listing the item, packing it, or material costs.

Also somewhat related. Many sellers JACK UP THE SHIPPING COSTS BECAUSE IT KEEPS MORE MONEY OUT OF EBAYS GREEDY HANDS AND KEEPS IT BETWEEN THE BUYER/SELLER. This is long enough so I wont explain but that's just how it is.

So long story short (too late) ebay is not all fun and games and people are not usually trying to rip you off with shipping costs etc. Sellers need to make some money somehow with ebays ridiculous costs plus expensive shipping costs and everything that goes with it.

I would (tell them no, that is). The one time you make an exception or do something you don't normally do would be the one time you get screwed. Only very, very rarely will I ship something outside the US, and those times it's only to Canada. I set up auctions to block bidders from outside countries, but despite that, there's always one idiot who doesn't read and will ask if I'll ship to whatever country. Those people I ignore and put on my block list.
