Exchange 4gb for 250gb

jnest

CAGiversary!
Just bought my first 360 and I decided to get a 4gb... After playing for about a week I think I want to exchange my 4gb back to Best Buy for the 250gb. If I want to do this, how do I de-activate my xbox live gold on my current 4gb before returning? Is this a problem?

Thanks!

p.s. one of the main reasons is that you cannot play halo reach co-op without a HD... There is still no fix for this?

Well I paid $199 for the 4gb and the 250gb is $299... So I would only pay $100. As far as I can see is that the 250gb HD is going for $130?

It's not like the PS3, just restore your HD and account recover to your new HD.
You gotta put the email and PW you used to make your name to account recover.

Yeah, make sure you delete everything on the 4gb hd or move it to a flash drive before bringing it to best buy or those blue shirted weirdos will have it. When you get you new xbox all you have to do is bring up the guide and choose recover profile, and, assuming your connected to the internet, your gamertag/achievos/live subscription will be back.

You can get a 250GB HDD with a fitted enclosure for the slim 360 on ebay for $50 easy. When I get my 4GB kinect bundle from Burger King I'm either gonna buy one from there or just buy an enclosure for my 120GB one on my current xbox. Screw Microsoft for $130, you're flushing money down the toilet just for storage.

I bought an enclosure for my 120 GB drive, thinking I could trade my Elite 360 into Gamestop without a hard drive, but now I'm in a panic thinking maybe Gamestop doesn't take an Elite without the hard drive. Does anyone know? I'm worried this grand upgrade plan may be a failure. :( Would love to hear that all is well. I guess I'll find out tomorrow one way or another.

Of course you can trade in your elite without a HD.

I got a case from eBay, not a hard drive. The drive is from my Jasper and is the official Microsoft one. Anyway, thanks all for the reassurance on the trade in!

I bought the 4gb on 11/21 -- Best Buy shouldn't have a problem exchanging it right?

This is what I'm thinking of doing. I didn't win a bundle from BK, so I was going to buy the Kinect. I'm now thinking about just spending the $100 extra to get the 4gb bundle and putting my 120GB into one of the enclosures. I have an old Falcon 20GB Pro that I had upgraded the hard drive on a couple of years ago. It has been repaired once, but I really want one of those slims because my system is loud as hell.

I can then take my old system and trade it in at Gamestop while they have the $25 extra right now. It will recoup most of the $100 extra that I would spend for the system.

That's exactly what I did, but I got the 4GB 360 S from amazon on black friday and got a $60 video game credit there too! :) If you get one of those cases, I'd recommend getting one of the ones that says it snaps together. That's the one I got and it's very nice. The earlier ones required glueing the case together. Perhaps not a big deal, but I like the idea of just snapping together. FYI, when you do a license transfer, you still have to "redownload" all your download stuff even though it's already on your hard drive that you moved to it. It doesn't really download the games/DLC, it just downloads the licenses. It's a pain, but you'll want to do it. Also you have to do this from the Xbox - I tried to redownload from the web page, queuing the stuff up, but then it just said it was already licensed on another console. I had to do it from the xbox account management, purchase history.

It's only been 10 days...

Bestbuy is notorious with a horrible return policy, esp if the product is opened. I haven't shopped in Bestbuy in ages so maybe things have changed. Wouldn't hurt to just return it and call up Microsoft and see if they can do anything about your Live membership.

Best of luck!

There are a bunch of 250gb xbox hd's going for around $60 on ebay... If I just upgrade my 4gb with one of these will it be the same as just buying a 250gb version?

Thanks for all your input so far!

No, because you'll end up with 254 gigs. Plus you'll have the matte black finish which may or may not be worth more to you than the glossy 250GB.

I dont care about the glossy finish... I am saying performance wise.

Can anyone else weigh in on this? Not sure if I should try to go through the hassle of trying to exchange the 4gb or just buy a 250gb hard drive.

Thank you.

The ebay hard drives may not have the backward compatibility engine (for original Xbox games), but if that doesn't matter to you then I think it will be fine. They might have it, but you'd have to check with the seller. Apparently you can add the backward compatibility, but it may not be trivial and I believe requires partitioning the drive and adding some files. I'm not an expert on this, just going on what I've read on CAG from others. If that's not something you want to deal with then I would return the 4GB and get the 250 GB one.

Hah just tried out Best Buys twitter Twelp Force... They responded in about 30 mins:

@twelpforce As long as you are within the 30 day exchange period shouldn't be a big deal at all :) via @GSAgentP
