<facepalm> Someone smack me, I just passed up a Chinese boxset of TF G1 for $20....

Yes. To add to the stupid things I've done in the past(like passing up new in box NES top loaders for $15 each from Wally World), I just passed up a Chinese boxset of the first 3 seasons of the G1 Transformers with a copy of the movie included in the set.

It was marked $49.99 in the case of a thrift store down the line from me and they offered me it for $20.

Thing is, while trying to get it out of the box to check out all that was in there I ripped the front of the outer box.

But seasons 1-3 and the movie were in CD sleeves inside a wooden box inside that outer cardboard box.

So....how stupid was I for passing this up? Please let me have it...

Do you *know* that it was a legit one? If it's a bootleg... just pirate it yourself. Paying for bootlegs is stupid.

It was a set with Optimus Prime and I believe Rodimus Prime on the front cover.

I went back to the store and the girl who offered me it for $20 was gone home and the assistant manager woman would not budge on the $50 pricetag saying 'it's only been here since May 31st'.

These stores around here claiming to be thrift stores price game consoles like they have gold on their hands and any larger DVD sets like this are priced stupid high(like this one).

Shit languishes for months in the case till either someone pays the price or they finally lower it.

Oh well. I'll wait till I'm headed that way on Wednesday and see if I can get it discounted again.

THIS was the set that I saw earlier today:

Supposedly it came out September 27th, 2004. I know a few people that had the set and they said the quality was decent on them. But not $50 decent to me, even if they aren't region locked DVD's and decent quality.

Just pick it up the next time you see the girl who's the source of sweetness.
He just called you stupid Iatcg!
He asked for it! (Also, I didn't know how to write smack in Chinese.)

Oh, I'm not a he. ;)

I definitely asked for it though(to be called an idiot). I had always heard about this 'official bootleg'(kinda a contradiction in terms there) version and had several friends who had this version, but I never figured I'd see it in the wild.

Only thing I'm really pissed at right now is me for ripping the box it comes in, since that likely drove any resale value down. That is, assuming this could even BE resold once I'm done watching it.

Honestly, I wouldn't bother with it. Since there is an official US release of it now... if it's damaged, collectors likely won't want it. Means you'll be stuck with a foreign copy that most people will presume is a bootleg, even if it is an official release from China.

That's the thing. I tried finding the official US release of the first 2-3 seasons(like this box has) that Best Buy and other retailers had in a collector's edition, but it seems that every retailer that had it is sold out and the sets by themselves are $40-50 a pop.

I'm not THAT desperate to watch the old TF shows from the 80's.:booty:

So if I can go back on Monday and grab this for the $20 price if it's still there, then I'll do so. Even if I end up stuck with it, as long as they play and I can watch them myself, then I'll be happy with the purchase.;)

But damn if that packaging wasn't snug as could be around that inner box.:whistle2:#

Err??

Two parts to Season 2, cost $30 total. 3+4 is 14.99. It *was* re-released two or three years ago. :D The old Rhino pricing was high as fuck... but the better versions are cheaper.

I hate when companies split up seasons of shows into 'parts'. It just seems like a money grab to me.

But I'm intrigued by the fact they have seasons 3-4 in one set. I'm guessing they weren't very long seasons to be bundled together.

Now just to find a collected version of The Boondocks show that doesn't set me back $50 a season. I can still remember buying season one for $20 from Wally World, but even they want $30-50 for that now.

There is a really high chance that those are bootlegs. If you want the TF series for as little as possible just buy used copies of the original Rhino sets.

Actually I'm fairly certain they are bootlegs, but for $20(if offered that price again) I'll take them. A couple friends had this same set(including one who is a manager at an FYE) and they said they worked well.

This was the only 'set' available for a long time before the official releases.

I don't really condone piracy, but if it's a choice between paying $15 a set for the four 'official' ones or paying 1/3 that total price for the first 3-4 seasons, then I'm gonna take the cheaper option.

Either way, for possible bootlegs the packaging/discs look really, really nice.

Thing is, I don't know 100% that they ARE bootlegs that I saw today. I mean, I saw the sets my friends had and they looked similar, but they also told me they bought them from a usually legit site like Play-Asia or DealExtreme. All I know is they had all sorts of Japanese/Chinese lettering on them. Either way if they allow me to buy them for the $20 price next week I'll buy them after checking the discs a bunch.

If they work, then great, I got a set of TF season sets for stupid cheap regardless of if they are legit or not. If not, then it's just another fuck up, like that Sony surround sound thing I bought from another thrift store for $20 last month that was short circuited and won't properly power on.

So it's not the first time I'm buying something that clearly screams 'buyer beware'.

If it's from China, it's probably a bootleg. Oh, and DealExtreme has been known to sell bootlegs too.

 OK. Either I have to learn Chinese to watch the rest of this set(the copy of the TF movie that came with it was automatically in English when I played it) or I have to find a guide on how to change the language on the DVD's to English(if possible).

I watched the TF movie from the set(which has the first 3 seasons in it) and it played great. Then I figured I'd try disc one of season 1 for the hell of it....and both the narration and voiceovers are in CHINESE.

I'll have to fumble with the menus tomorrow to see if I can switch it to English.

Either way, I only paid the $20 I was offered it for last week and a copy of the TF movie is worth that much to me at least.

I should let my one buddy borrow the set without telling him it's in Chinese.

Another weird thing about this set is that it had disc 8 of season 4 in the box but no sign of discs 1-7, unless that disc is just a teaser and really part of season 3 cuz I think the movie was before the season 4 disc.

Oh well. I'll figure this out.;)
