The last two Castlevania games are really expensive - even used! Then I saw a bunch of the going for $16 shipped on ebay, but I felt that this was odd, so I did a little searching and discovered there are fake knockoffs being sold as the genuine article. Anyone heard anything about this? How can you tell the real from the fakes?
 
ehhh, you want to post some examples? i've never heard of fake castlevanias. there are tons of castlevanias spanning a few systems that have come out over the past 5 or 6 years, are you sure you aren't confused? you may have been looking at the N64 versions or GBA.... unless i'm mistaken and there are pirate copies of homemade castlevanias.
 
He's talking about the bootleg copies of GBA games, of which there are tons on Ebay. I got burned with a bootleg of Harmony of Dissonance some months back. I have learned to be a lot more careful...don't bother ordering ANYTHING that comes out of Hong Kong or Singapore.

It shows some of the more common pirate carts. However on EBay, if they're shipping from out of the country, especially from SE Asia, you have a 99 in 100 chance of it being a pirate cart, especially when it's sold at that price. Good ways of telling are of course real images of the item, but also check out the seller's other items, and if there are lots of other carts at similar prices, or in multiple copies of the title, you really should steer clear.
 
Another check for pirate games is to turn the cart so ur looking into the contacts{where it meets the GBA}u'll see gold{I think} bars above them u should see Nintendo and a Patent #.U may have to move it around in the light.Another give away is bootleg carts are bigger then regular games.Odds are they'll be without box+manual.They go cheap.
 
Yeah just a week ago I got burned on a Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow on Ebay. Just also check and make sure what the sellers rating is. If theyve been known to sell copies, other ebay users will give negative feedback saying "sold me a copy" Even if that seller has positive feedback, check the rating for any complaints.

I found out when I got mine that the box was shiny, the instructions were only 5 pages long, and the back of the cartridge said "NINTONDO" :(
 
After reading this topic, I'm wondering about a cheap copy of Prince of Persia for the GBA I got a few weeks ago. The manual and box were really crappy looking (ie looked photocopied) and the cartridge didn't fit into the GBA properly (ie it wouldn't click). Does this sound like a counterfeit?

I think I'll crack it open tonight...
 
omg! i never even knew they had pirated gba games... do they play the same? uh oh, i gotta check out the castlevania game i bought on ebay a few months back when i get home :(
 
It sounds like the people who might have counterfeit copies can still play the games....is this always the case?
 
Yes, they are still playable...but in reality you are getting very ripped off as it has about zero resale value, and no collectibility whatsoever. If it ever breaks or has a glitch, good luck getting a new one.

Not to take enjoyment in the face of your situation, but any chance you can post a picture of said "Nintondo" logo?
 
I remember getting burned with a GBC bootleg of Beatmania, which although it was great, it crashed if I picked one of the songs so I couldn't even play all the songs on the cart. I sent it back to the guy who said he'd replace it and I guess he probably just said he did because I got the same cartridge with the same problems. B.S. For the GBC and normal GB carts, look for it to say "GAME" at the top instead of "GAME BOY." Wish I knew that back then
 
Also, some sellers in the US managed to get ahold of those pirated carts and sell it as new. A friend of mine was a victim. Basically : check if any of the buyers complained about a pirated cart. Also watch out if the seller kept his feedback private.
 
I checked and my Prince of Persia is a "NIntondo" counterfeit! It runs fine, but I'm pissed about the lack of resale value issue (I'll sell games when I'm done playing them). I'm going to contact the seller "SylesNGames" and see if they will refund/replace it. If not, I'm going to contact eBay.

The case is a darker gray than regular cartridges (almost black) and on the back it only says "Model NO AGB-002" instead of "Model NO AGB-002 Pat. Pend. Made in Japan."

I took some snapshots, I'll post them later.
