I would have to say SaGa Frontier. The battle system wasn't that practical, but at least it was unique. It also had some of the best gaming music, ever, as well as tons of replay value (7 characters + multiple endings = 200+ hours of gaming). This RPG was actually fun to play! :D

Second favorite = Phantasy Star Online. The best moments were during the early days of the DC version's release in which no hacks and dupes existed. Tens of thousands of newbie characters using crappy-ass items. Ah..the good ol' days. Now, it's just gone down hill. Even the GC and (to a lesser extent, X-Box) version has been plagued with the cheating ways of US players (majority of cheaters are US players). :cry: Even so, I have logged on 2500+ hours in all versions combined...and still play to this day... :wink:
 
Chrono Trigger is my favorite, Xenogears is my second, Star Ocean 2 is my third. I haven't gotten into an RPG that comes close to the experiences from those 3 old-school games. Maybe I'm jaded, but everything out now seems stale compared to Chrono Trigger.
 
paper mario. it also happens to be my fave n64 game and in my top 10 ever. it was just so much fun and had an inventive battle system to boot.
 
crono trigger, because it was the first rpg i ever played and i was like i think 6 or 7 at the time. i used to keep renting it from blockbuster back when they had those 3 day rentals. and i started over a lot because it was on a cartridge...ahh the good ol days. yeah its probably my fav rpg at first cuz it brought back good memories. its not till i played it recently on final fantasy chronices where i realized how good it was.
 
LOL, I never really thought about when ppl would rent cartridge games at Blockbluster and their games being gone. Did anyone ever look for the same game if there were two copies and hope you'd still have your save on there?
 
I would have to say FFXI It is the best MMORPG ever made. I will be on this game for at least the next year. The only people that seem to think otherwise are people too poor to afford it. Unfortunatly the hacking has begun.
 
Crono Trigger, followed by FF6, and then Panzer Dragoon Saga.

I've played suikoden 2, and it didnt make my top 3 because i have Panzer Dragoon Saga.
 
"Unfortunatly, the hacking has begun." What? They already started hacking on XI? LOL, I guess all the PS2 ppl will be going into it with hacking already started (including myself). Hmmmm, atleast I can hack my character become level 60 (sarcasm).
 
Wow, i desperately need to get my posts up, i joined 9 months ago, post 1-2 posts a day and there are people who have been here a month or who are already all-stars.
 
Final Fantasy II, Final Fantasy VII, Xenosaga, Skies of Arcadia, Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X2 in that order. The original Final Fantasy on NES started RPGs for me. I still remember paying $69.99 for it at ToysRUs on launch day. Final Fantasy II on SNES was just awesome. I like alot of other RPGs, but these are my most memorable ones.
 
Dragon Warrior for the Nes ! I used to rush home everyday form school just to play it. It was one of the First if not the Frist RPG's I ever got hooked on .
 
Baldur's Gate 2:Shadows of Amn and Throne of Bhaal expansion. I've played through this game about 11 times. There are a TON of great mods out there for this and other Infinity Engine games that add to the already immense replay value. This game cost me an extra semester in college to retake one measly course...and it was completely worth it.

Number 2 is Ultima Online. I was convinced to buy this game after playing around on my friend's account one night. I took his "evil" character out and had a jolly time running around the most populated bank wearing only a soiled loincloth and accusing random people of stealing my pants. I then organized a hunting party, only to flee like a little girl at the first sign of any ill-intentioned creature....this lead to exchanges such as-

Me: "DROP YOUR MEAT!!!"
Random person unfortunate enough to have chosen to do a dungeon crawl with me: "Why? Do they go for meat?"
Me: "No, but I do!" ::grabs worthless meat off ground and runs away chuckling like he just won the lottery::

I fell in love with the game the night after I bought it. A friend and I were chilling at our veteran friend's small stone tower, which lay in one of the most out-of-the-way locations in the entire game. Two guys randomly teleport in with a tame dragon in tow. The dragon quickly goes feral, and targets my friend and I. We managed to lure it back into the house, only to die by its claws right away. The dragon, however, was trapped. I only wish I could have been at my friend's real life apartment to see the look on his face when he logged in to be greeted by our new "pet."

And before I submit this beastly and sure-to-be-ignored post, I'd just like to show some love to Skies of Arcadia, Final Fantasy V, and the Shining Force and Fire Emblem series.
 
I would also have to say Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn and Throne of Bhall. It has high quality gameplay, and is worth every penny. I have played it through three times, and I cant wait until I get enough free time to play it again.
For second place I would have to pick Skies of Arcadia: Legends. Easily one of the best RPGs ever made, it gives you a great sense of exploration, and the world map is great. The battles are not the strongest part of the game, but they work.
Some of my other favorites are Knights of the Old Republic, Final Fantasy 4 and 9, and Chrono Trigger.
 
Secret of Mana is my all-tive fav (and pretty much every other game in the Mana/Seiken Densetsu seires), but I also love Chrono Trigger, Mario RPG, and Illusion of Gaia was so damn awesome too.
 
Star Ocean the second stiry becuse it was more then just a turn based rpg. It combine free motion with random battles and special moves assigned to the shoulder buttons. I'm deffinitely getting the sequel for PS2 when it comes out
