I'm lovin' it so far. I was upset by how fast Cecil walks around, but then I found the option to make it normal. The difficulty seems unchanged, which is great. Some of the themes have been redone with respect to the original theme.. There's a few more "Damn"'s and "hell"'s that I remember, but other than that, it's a nearly perfect port. I'm so happy it's finally out, it's one of my favorites of all time.

From FFII on SNES or FFIV on playstation?

That being said, this is by far my favorite Final Fantrasy game of them all. But, I don't know if it's worth buying. I've played FFII so many times already. Is there anything new in it that makes it worth buying?

I thought this was true to the original Japanese version, whereas the original U.S. Final Fantasy 2 was known as Final Fantasy 4 EZ. Checking Gamespot, you are correct though. Thats mildly dissapointing, I was wanting to try the harder, original game, and not the technically watered down version that we got.

No, I'm pretty sure the difficulty is set at the original Japanese difficulty. I guess I could be wrong, but it sure seems like it.

Bought a copy. IV is one of the few FFs I haven't played, and I'm thoroughly enjoying it thus far.

For those who've played previous iterations of the game or have made progress through this copy, is level grinding necessary to get through the game?

It's either Mario and Luigi 2 or FF IV this weekend. I want to play another DS game after I finish Phoneix Wright, but I'm also in mood for a good ol' RPG.

I dont recall ever having to do a significant amount of walking back and forth to build levels. There were a few parts in the game where the challenge was significant enough that you could be influenced to do so though.

Also this:
This is definately FF4 Hardtype. FF2(US) was based on FF4 Easytype, which is easier. The main differences include a scarcity of 'all heal' type items (Heal in FF2us), instead having a specific heal item for each ailment. The other major difference is enemies have rows that are treated like the player party, monsters in the back take less damage from ones in the front.

Theres a 50 floor bonus dungeon after you beat the game. Supposedly randomly generated and dificulty set to whatever level you were when you beat the game, or something like that.

From FFII on SNES.. never played it on PS. That's why i'm so excited to have a portable version. There's no really noticible differences yet except for a few minor changes in music here and there, as well as a bit more dialog and everything is shaped in much neater looking boxes, but as I said, I never played the PS version so I don't know if it was like that in the PS version or not.

I'm not too far into the game. I just met up with Yang and his castle got bombed by the Red Wings and the King gave me the Deathbringer (sword).

This is my favorite game of all-time, for reasons of it being a good game and nostalgic reasons as well.

I first bought FF2 for $10 due to a Montgomery Ward's ad stating that they had SNES games for $10 (showed up and of course there were no $10 games). The guy tells my dad I can pick any game I want for $10 and FF2 was mine.

Additionally, while I had played DW and FF on Nes, this game was the first experience with an RPG that had a story in it that really drew you in. I love it!

Even though I have already bought the SNES version again and the PS version and played through both, I will probably buy this one as well.

wikipedia

"A modified version of the game was released for the Super Famicom in Japan in 1991 under the name Final Fantasy IV Easytype. While the game retained the storyline, graphics, and sound of the original game, the game engine had been modified so as to make the game substantially simpler, and the finished product was marketed at "beginning" gamers. Despite popular belief, this was not the version translated into English by Square's North American subsidiary SquareSoft"

Cripes.. i'm up playing this at 3am.. I knew it was a bad idea to buy this!

Oh well, thank God it came out the day after classes are over.. no worrying about studying for finals.. my eyes are barely open, i'm playing this laying down with one eye barely open.. must.. stay.. awake!

Wow...that sig is badass.

Anyways, I've certainly played FF4 to death. I don't think it's worth buying right now. Maybe trading for later on.

FF4 is the game that really brought me into RPGs. I had played FF and DW on the NES, but when this came out and I got my hands on it, I finally realized exactly what the genre was and how amazing it could be. The music, storytelling, and atmosphere of FF4 was brilliant for its time. I still get chills wandering around in the caves with Tellah before you fight the octopus monster (can't remember names).

How long ago was this released on the SNES? Damn I'm getting old. I remember playing this in elementary school and realizing my (now, not then) best friend loved the genre as well. It was still underground at the time. That's when you had to search for people who even know what an RPG was.

Damn. He still plays it on emulator all the time, too. Keeps finding crazy ways to beat it. Like how fast can he beat it and whats the lowest level you can manage. I'll have to ask him what his accomplishments are. They are the sort of thing you can only do when you've beaten it, literally, about 100 times and know everything back and forth.

I picked it up on Tuesday, of course loving it. Haven't played it too much yet though. Scorch, where is the option to slow down the dungeon movement? I don't really like the menu being attached to the start button, its not as convenient as the X or Y or whatever it used to be... of course, I'm playing it on my DS, the GBA doesn't even have the X or Y buttons, does it? Duh.

I do like the way the dialog is displayed now. You can flip through it as quickly as you want rather than waiting for it to type out. I would say the difficulty is a bit changed from the SNES version, particularly since Rydia got killed after one round of her first battle (30 HP - two consecutive attacks of 15+ while in the back row).

As soon as I get home from work I will get to hear the intense danger theme as I quit just before entering the bombed out Damcyan.
Got it last night. I have yet to beat FF I & 2 GBA though.
I would skip 1 & 2 for now. They toned it down so much it was silly. Like a cakewalk...where someone else walks for you.

I'm going to try to pick this up today at BB with the $10 off 360 coupon.

jfunkdpg: Level grinding can become a necessity, though it only usually arrises as a need for me around the last dungeon.

And as for the US version (SNES) not being the same as the original japanese game, I can attest to that. I had always heard that FFIV:Easytype was the US version, re-released in Japan, but I never actually looked into it.

One difference I clearly remember was that the SNES version of FF2 was missing a large portion of the secondary abilities for the characters, such as Cecil's dark wave and Porom and Palom's bluff and cry abilities.

i love the fact near the end of the game you can go back and put the other guys back in your party. Zeromus will fell the wrath of yang!

Bought it last night while it was on sale, haven't checked it out yet since I was still trying to hunt down a DS with no dead pixels. I'll probably start on it this weekend.

This will likely be the first FF game I play all the way through...back in the NES days I played through the first three Dragon Warrior games but never got past a few hours with FF. Then I played a bit of FF VII but didn't stick with it.

Related note: Someone knocked the FF 1&2 compilation for GBA...is it that bad or just not as good as IV?
How long ago was this released on the SNES?
Back in 91, I believe. I didn't manage to play it till 95, myself.
i love the fact near the end of the game you can go back and put the other guys back in your party. Zeromus will fell the wrath of yang!
If this is true, I will cry. The best thing of FF4 is just how focused it is and how much I want to go kick Zeromus ass for what he has done.

Anyone know how this works? Do I just pick a team before the moon and then I'm stuck with that team? I mean I am frothing for the game as it is the darling of my RPG world, but I feel this is just something for the power leveling nuts.

Of course I'm still gonne go and get this and pick Kain, Rosa, Rydia, and Edge and play it the way I remember it.

I admit, I think allowing you to change your members out for the final battle is silly and takes away from the overall story. Hopefully it's explained better than Halo meeting DOA.

The 50 floor dungeon thing is bleh. I wanted to beat FF1 GBA's extra dungeons, but it just would have given me better equipment, and I was already kicking serious ass anyway. The only game I can think of where this sort of thing was really well done was Lufia 2 (although Paper Mario's 100 level dungeon is fun).

So there's some bonus dungeon in it, you say? Hopefully it does retain the perfect balance of the game itself. I wouldn't mind that, I think. It would be amusing to drag Edward through it and have him eaten by a Behemoth.

I believe something like this would make more sense in the FF6 world. Just throw it into the colosseum or something. Since in that game leveling up just gets silly once you get going in the second half.

And I agree on that Pit of Trials in Paper Mario 2. That ruled. However, dying on floor 98 the first time through discouraged me for like a week.

I got to about level 93 and died. I realized I needed to get Mario's life up. I could probably finish it now though. The Bone Dragon or whatever will feel my wrath!

I got it yesterday at BB with the coupon. Haven't opened it or played it yet. Can't wait though. It's gonna be a vacation game.

Randomly generated! :D Damn it I need this game NOW!

How many hours have you put in?
Its only been like 2 or 3 days?
Or is leveling just fast in this game?

This was probably 30-40 hours in at least. I'd have to check. I played it over the summer, plan to finish over the holidays.

Start > Config > "B Button Dash".. change it to OFF. What's weird, though, is that this option is kinda backwards. Or something. I dunno. It was on by default, and I changed it to Off, and now the B button dashes and he walks normally. So try that out.

I was up playing this until 4am.. went to sleep.. woke up and went right back to playing. I'm at Baigan. I am backtracking now, I need to build my characters up BIG time, so i'm going to fight more people until I get leveled up more.

On a side note, why can't I buy ether from the item store? I was about 8 when I played this through last, but I don't remember having problem finding ether.. was it in the item shop on the SNES version, and if not, where the hell am I supposed to get it!?

Thanks Scorch, I saw that option but was probably equally confused. As far as the ether, I'm almost positive you could buy that in shops in the SNES version. Could be that is a change back to the Japan version. I know it was mentioned that potions are harder to find, I guess that might also apply to ether.

I know it was mentioned that potions are harder to find, I guess that might also apply to ether.

Potions are plentiful in this.. I actually have around 40 potions (and no money), but I have yet to find Ether in any shop, when I do have Ether it's because I got it in a battle or I found it in a pot or something..

you are able to switch characters after the giant of babel. Cid, Yang, Edward, Porom and Palom can then be used again if you wish, you know you want to kill Zeromus with edward the spoony bard

Um...If I can remember, ethers are hard to come by in the "Hard" version. I recall having 40 ethers, hell maybe 99 in SNES. Found any Turbo Ethers yet? I wonder if that had a name change.

That's the one; but that version can't be any but the GBA version! What the hell? If FFIV Advance isn't based on Easy Type, was this a picture from the bonus dungeon, or did they put in the easy zeromus?

Now I'm confused; I have the game, and I'm desperate to play it, but I'm also trying to finish "Soul of Rebirth" for GBA FFII first.

No, no "Turbo Ethers". I've only found the normal Ether. I need at least ten for the next few boss battles, otherwise i'm fucked. Palom and Parom are getting killed in one hit even with great armor. I'm able to do the twin attack, then one usually dies after that, then the other. I can bring them back with Phoenix Down, and I want to use Curea with Tellah, but I can't.. no MP. I also remember not having a problem finding ethers in the SNES version.. but here, nothing. I've checked Baron, I even went back to the city where Rydia's mother was killed and you can't buy any there, either.

I played FFI and II on GBA. Very entertaining games. I'm looking forwarding to playing FFIV. BTW, anyone know if FFIII will be released in the future? And also why they released FFIV before FFIII?

i got it BUT i dont plan on opening it till around Xmas or new years... i dont feel like going out anymore so i will have something to do

FFIII will be released on the DS hopefully some time next year. Reason why IV came first is because w/ III they are doing new polygon graphics instead of a port.

Good to see everyone is enjoying the game. Pay day is tomarrow so prob will pick it up but M&L: PIT is taking much of my time for now.
