Galatic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar arrives!

It's officially available in stores (I saw it in Best Buy this weekend) for those who want a boxed copy. It includes GalCiv2 and the Dark Avatar expansion pack, and there's a $10 rebate inside the box (for those who already own the original GalCiv2).

A great buy for those who like 4x turn based strategy games (Moo and Moo2 are the obvious comparisons, and Civilization as well).

I picked up the Gold Edition a few days ago.

After about 6 games of me just not getting it, everything clicked and I was on my way to dominance :D

It's a much much harder 4x game, and far more in depth than others. I really like it.

It's a tricky game at first. My problem was the fact that while the manual does a good job of telling you what every menu option, button, and slider does, it doesn't actually tell you how to play the game. Civ4 excels here, because the manual does this, plus it has a great in-game tutorial, and a fantastic "Civlopedia".

My recommendation for new people is to read the following beginner's guide, which goes over all the important bits, plus explains what your opening moves should be like:

http://forums.galciv2.com/?forumid=164&aid=104908&p=1#1111626

After that go to the galciv2.com forums and take a look at the strategies section. That will give some other ideas as to what things can be done with the game.

What's cool with the game is that you can devise your own path to victory. Want to blow everyone off the map? Go for it. Want to ally with some and blow the rest off the map? Can do. Want to ally with some and then bend the ones who won't ally to your will with your all-powerful influence? Yep, that can be done too.

Note: the Gold Edition is only $27.99 this week at Circuit City. Remember there's a $10 coupon inside (to use if you already own GalCiv2).
