Game Hunting: Afrika

This is the first in a series i'll be doing on game shopping and hunting.

We've all been there. Sometimes it's trying to track down a last-gen (or older) game that you used to play and has now become rare. Sometimes it's a game with a low print run like, say, anything Atlus publishes. But at one time or another, and probably many times, we've all had to hunt for a game that was simply hard to find. I'm not a typical game collector, but I certainly consider the games I have to be a collection. Usually it starts out as maybe a niche title that appeals to you, or one you find out about late, but then hunt for the game becomes fun.

I'm right there right now with Afrika. The game, if I may be so bold to say, could very well be the rarest PS3 game after this console generation is over. And I wanted to play it before it was even released. I heard about the game, some people even calling it a "better Pokemon snap with real animals" and the more I read the more I wanted in. It was released in the Holliday rush, and because I was buying Christmas presents for others, the only time late last year I bought games for myself was TRU's b2g1 sale. I went in to that sale hoping to grab Afrika, Uncharted 2, and A Boy and His Blob. When I arrived at the store, Afrika was nowhere to be found (ended up going with Toy Story Mania instead (what can I say, im a Disney freak)). I later checked Best Buy. No dice. I have no found out that while not technically a GameStop exclusive, to my knowledge they're the only place that carries this game...and not often. It's a tough get. The print run seems to have been extremley low with no reprint. The used game rarley turns up in stores. And I can't remember the last time i've seen it on GameStop.com.

Again, the game still hasn't shown up (to my knowledge) in any store other than GameStop/EB Games. One CAG mentioned seeing one copy used at Blockbuster for $50. That's the normal new price of the game. And even ebay is littered with copies of the game from other countries, but few of the NTSC version. The American version is the only one with the trophy system implemented.

I've been holding out on going game shopping for the GameDays sale, hoping for a B2G1 opportunity to snag Afrika and using gamestop.com's in-story inventory tracker as a reference, but I am also considering grabbing it ASAP, as I fear it just wont be around during the next B2G1. I know this game got the one bad review, and nobody else seems to have looked at it. But everything i've seen, and from what the few people who have played it have said, it is a decent title. Sure, it has it's faults but what game doesnt. This is one i'm determined to get. Stay tuned, i'll update when I do.

EDIT: I'd like to do this as a blog, if somebody could fill me in on how. Cant seem to figure out how to write a blog on here.

Dr. Claw you had me worried. I just checked gamestop.com and there are 25+ used copies all over LA. Must be all the wannabe photogs/paparazzi. Every single gamestop in LA is listed as having a new copy as well.

I wouldn't worry about having to hunt down this game...undoubtedly more than enough copies to satisfy those who want it and leave enough for the collectors. I can see this being a sub-$10 used games in a year or so at Gamestop.

There's a difference between 'rare' and 'not in your area'... it sounds like this one is the latter. (I find 16 copies within 50 miles of my house, but nothing closer than about 15 miles away.)

I had a similar issue with Muramasa just recently... it's not rare by a long shot, but I was checking in-store as opposed to online and not finding it anywhere. Opted to look it up via the Gamestop website when my tax return came in, and found excactly 1 store in my usual run that had it at all (1 used and 1 new.) Not sure what's up with that, but I'm not gonna worry about it either.

i recently found the game myself, i wouldnt call the game rare exactly but its virtually impossible to find in my area no gamestops have any new copies around here and i only found 1 used, ive been looking ever since i downloaded the free for japan afrika dynamic theme

If the OP is from Chicago, I punched in ZIP codes north, south, and west of the city and there are stores within 5-20 miles that allegedly have used copies in stock. If he wants one that badly, he shouldn't have any trouble getting in a car and driving to the desired store.

I got it from gamerang (game rental company like gamefly) a few days after it came out. It's decent but in no way a "better" version of Pokemon Snap. Pokemon Snap is an excellent game.

The only B&M that seems to carry it is Gamestop, but it looks pretty common to find online if you search a little. I'm still holding out hope for a Gamestop price drop to around $20.

Also, funny thing, I could've bought the Japanese version (called Hakuna Matata) for $29.99 at last week's MegaCon show in Orlando. I decided to pass hoping for a better deal on the US version eventually.
