I'm looking to find out if there are any more games where the achievements have an actual impact on gameplay like how they allowed you to improve your characters in Mass Effect. Are there any other games like that? It really motivated me to actually bother to get them all and I'd love to see them impact the actual game more often.

You mean, you had to play the game to play the game?

They gave in-game bonuses to your character. The detailed list can be seen here:

Example: Tactician (25) – Complete playthrough with shield damage greater than health damage. Shield strength increases by 10%

It's a good point, and something that I had forgotten about until the OP mentioned it. Chasing down those achievements for more than points adds some dimensions. In game stats, the promised awards of the last update, or perhaps in-game unlockables give additional incentive.

The only thing I can think of from off the top of my head would be Soul Calibur IV. You can unlock in-game character creation items by unlocking achievements.
