GameStop Store Credit Transaction History

CAGiversary!
I don't know if there's a better forum or sub-forum for this, but I know some folks here work for GameStop (and more importantly, a lot of us use GameStop), and I recently had an experience that makes me _very_ wary of ever using store credit there ever again.

I accrued a substantial trade in balance (in part due to CAG, go figure) and had it credited to my PowerUp Rewards card. I made some instore and online purchases. One of my online purchases was "held" (their customer service couldn't explain why). I asked them to cancel it, and they did. However, for a few days, the $50 I was charged to my store credit wasn't refunded. I called, emailed, and went in store, hoping to get a five to ten transaction history on my store credit account (my power up rewards card, basically), and everytime I was told they couldn't. At least not without a police report.

Finally, just minutes before I submitted a BBB complaint (having spent two weeks contacting GameStop explaining I feared they failed to credit me $50), it finally appeared back on the card. I submitted the complaint anyway, basically explaining I was shocked GameStop refuses to provide store credit transaction history. Their BBB response was "We give you a receipt. You can check your balance online. This matter is closed."

So, I got my $50 back. Great. Now I'm afraid, however, that GameStop offers no transparency and has no accountability for transactions on my PowerUp Rewards card. What if I submit another online order that fails to go through? I have to monitor my balance daily to make sure it credits back? Even worse, what if a shady employee conducts a transaction using my cards information - maybe just a small $20 charge - and unless I memorize and remember, at all times, my exact store credit balance, I would never know because I can't request a recent transaction history.

Obviously the PowerUp Rewards card isn't a credit card or bank account and there probably aren't any regulations requiring stores to provide history of store credit\gift card balances, but if GameStop cared about customers, I would assume they had SOME way to give us information about transactions on our store credit account.

Any GameStop employees or customers with similar experiences want to chime in? I know it seems like a silly thing to be worried about, but I work in the financial industry and transparency and accountability are key, so this is a big deal to me.

In store, they can see the last 5 items you bought. Not the last five transactions, just the last five items. No, they can't print it out either.

But, ya, if you're worried about it, keep your receipts. This goes for any store. Not just Gamestop.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I do keep my receipts (I actually scan them, since most places use thermal paper). The problem in this case was an online transaction taking a very long time to credit back to my account. There were no receipts involved - simply them stating "We cancelled your order" - and a week later, my card balance not changing. Without transaction history to review, I had no way to verify if they were taking a long time crediting me, or I just completely miscalculated (in this case, they took a very long time crediting me).

They do this with purchases but it doesnt work for trade-ins right?

I had a similar problem with something purchased online. They put a "hold" on it as well and it actually never cleared off on its own. When they shipped the game they charged the card for real so it was double-billed with the first one supposedly being temporary. The phone reps, by the way, had no problem looking at my transacton history and seeing it in there. They told me to wait a few days for it to clear off. When it was still there a month later I got them to clear it manually. So sometimes their system glitches out when it comes to those online hold authorizations.

Right now I'm trying to account for about $70 in missing credit that might have been from the same sort of thing. Having them refer you to receipts is great and all, but for online purchases you don't even get the card number on the receipt or on the online order history. So once you make an order you have no idea which card you used on it. I have several cards going back to the EB Games days and according to my records I should have about $70 more than I can account for (by checking balances online). There probably isn't much I can do about it at this point.

But I definitely recommend you keep a running balance on a piece of paper with the card (or cards). What I do is put a Post-It-Note around each card and then when I make purchases in store I verify the balance on the receipt and put the new total on the note. But then online purchases can hose this up, especially if they double-bill like that.
