From Kotaku:

GameStop: Our PS3s Sold-Out Nationwide

I just got off the phone with a GameStop spokesman who confirmed that as of 2 p.m. Mountain Time, the chain's 3,600 stores has sold out of every single one of their PS3 pre-orders. As of right now, he went on to say, the chain has no word on whether they will be getting anymore for launch day. So this could be it for their initial batch of consoles.

Each store had at least eight PS3's for preorder, with some getting as many as 16. And, he confirmed that only two units per a store could be sold to employees.

While they sell-out wasn't confirmed until 2 p.m., the spokesman told me it was a matter of minutes at most stores. He added that this was much faster than the sell-out rate of the Xbox 360. at the chain.

I don't understand how this is news. With only 16 units available per store and common knowledge that there won't be many available at launch day, how could they not sell out?

The crazy thing is that no one knows what they are going to be paying in the end. These bundles they are going to force on people could end up being insane.

The store reservations are not bundles. They are system only reservations. The option was available to reserve games as well, but that was not required.

Now, if you reserve a system online at Gamestop, you will have bundles. But the brick and mortar reservations are for the system only.
Yeah right, I'm sure the employees bought more than two. Gamestop is an evil shithole.
Well, obviously it's going to be tough to refute a post with this much factual content.

The timing of this press releases is cirumspect.

It was released around 2 PM EST. I pre-ordered my PS3 at around 3:15 PM, because the manager was holding a system from an employee until 3:00 PM and he was late, so he sold it to me. I may have the distinction of having the latest pre-order in the US. Not an advantage.

Dont worry those guys that tried to double dip will get one cancelled and that should in theory bump you up the totem pole.

Well, that would certainly be true, since they definitely took a lot more than 8-16 preorders for Xbox 360's at each store and they kept letting people pre-order them for weeks. It's not even comparable. The pre-order debacle for the Xbox 360 is partially responsible for such a small limit for the PS3.

If this articles numbers are true then it does prove that some stores held some consoles for employees (over the 2 limit) or valuable customers. I base this off the stories in the PS3 preorder topic that say the stores only had 2-4 preorders or none. The article states that at a bare minimium each store got 8 preorders. Sounds like some of you that didn't get in on preorders due to the above should report that store to EBgames/Gamestop corporate. Just to throw some fire their way for wasting your time. ;)

I heard on the radio that one of the Detroit area GameStops only had four preorders. I think I read the same thing on, maybe, Joystiq later that night. (Of course, the radio may have been refering to the same article too.

Something else that someone posted on the PSU forums was that someone was claiming that his GS wasn't even doing pre-orders because, according to the manager, it was a new store. I hate to spread rumors on the interwebs (can you believe that fibbers post, too?), but I found that interesting and, sadly, highly believable. (Of course, I'd be pissed if I was working at a GS and I couldn't get a system because the manager and another employee reserved the only ones for employees...)

Totally false. I preordered at a store that has been open for 2 weeks. They sold 12 preorders.

A local Gamestop confirmed that they only had 6 preorders to give. I'm guessing two employies preordered as well, rounding the number out to 8.

I didn't really believe it either. Either the poster lied, or the manager did. Remembering how things were for the PS2 launch, and recently the 360, I don't think it is completely unbelievable that it was the latter....

EDIT: Let me rephrase that. I don't totally believe the poster on PSU, but I can totally see a situation where a manager tells someone that they have no preorders because the employees and their friends got them all...because we saw that happen at other launches.

I got mine from a store that had only been open a few weeks and they had 8 to pre-order. Granted, I ended up getting #8 at about 5 pm, which also disproves the 2pm thing.

It was great though, not only was this place new so that nobody knows about it, it's in the middle of a farming community, so nobody plays games.

A friend did the same its only been open for a few weeks got 8 or 12 I think

I waited in line a hour at a Gamestop that claimed they only got 4 preorders. This was gamestop which had been there for years. I was the 5th person in line so I was out of luck. The guy said "I hope that one of you is a company guy because we only have 4 preorders." Hmm I wonder what he could of meant by that?

I'd be amazed if they didn't sell out, considering that very high traffic stores in NYC, the most densely populated city in our nation, only got a measly 15 units. It's really nothing to write home about, since I'm sure that even a Neo-geo could sell out with paltry numbers like that. My only hope, if that I get a chance to get in on the online pre-order bundles, that they're supposed to offer on November 1st. I know they'll probably be expensive, but I could care less since my PS3 is a gift from my in-laws in Japan.
