I preordered (paid off in full w/ Edge card credit) Battlefield: Bad Company 2 for the Xbox 360. Amazon.com now has a better deal. So today I decided to drop by GameStop to remove the preorder amount and put it back on my Edge card.

I gingerly strolled inside and politely told him I'd like to cancel my BFBC2 preorder. Of course, I got hassled. I told him that Amazon.com has it for $56.99 + $20 gaming credit + 0% tax + guaranteed street date delivery. He argued with me on many accounts: "You aren't getting those special weapons which are easily worth $20 in my book," he said with a smirk on his face. "They won't ship it to you on the date it releases either. They won't ship it to you overnight, they'll lose money," he exclaimed.

Once his rant ended, we begun the cancellation process. Oh boy, this did NOT go smooth. First, he asked for a receipt. Unfortunately, I didn't have it with me. He told me without it, I won't be able to cancel my preorder. So.. after 5 minutes of repeating "Why?", he "felt bad" and put $54 back on my card. This means $10 was left. He stated this $10 MUST go towards a preorder and can't be refunded.

Instead of explaining WHY, he just told me it's store policy. Fed up with his excuses, I thanked him for his time, and walked out.

The question is.. do I NEED a receipt to cancel a preorder that is paid off in full?

Not excusing the employee's crappy attitude, I think you actually do need a receipt to do returns on anything at Gamestop since I don't think individual store sales are linked from store to store.

Of course I always have my receipt, so maybe someone else has some more info.

But I don't understand if he gave you credit back, he should have just went all the way anyways and gave the rest of it back. It all sounds a little strange.

...pick it up if it's already paid in full and return it. He's completely full of shit - you're not required to spend your credit on anything you don't want to. He's just trying to pad his preorder numbers.
I don't think you do... They should have all of your information in their system, since you used your card to buy this. I think you got scammed out of $10, hope you got a receipt from him.

edit: this is a little dated but here's a thread on the same issue: http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=109798
This. The guy totally bullshitted you. Go talk to the manager, and if that doesn't work call up Corporate if you want to. They'll sort it out for sure.

Just go back in and tell them you want the $10 back in cash or on your edge card. It doesn't have to go to a pre-order, they can't force you to pre-order anything. If he tries again tell him to quit trying to push his pre-order numbers up or call the DM.

See, that's the thing. If I AM required to have a receipt then I'd look like a total ass for accusing someone of lying to me when he was merely trying to do his job.

I'm trying to see both sides of this.. but it's hard when common sense tells me I should be right! :p

Unless you have Amazon Prime, Release Date Shipping costs $5.99. If you have Prime, it's free.

So, the Gamestop rep is only right if you don't have prime.

Plus, as others have stated, he can't force you into that $10 going to another pre-order. He's only doing it to prevent him from showing a cancellation on his watch. I'd call the main GS phone number and lodge a complaint, regardless if he gives you back the $10 or not without a struggle.

If you want to cancel the preorder, nothing is stopping you from doing that. Asshole GS employees notwithstanding.

Also if I were you, I would leave a negative feedback through their tellgamestop survery.

You may not think it, but it actually does show up daily and someone cares.

I went into my Gamestop the other day, and one of the employees was freaking out cause their DM told the store they had a negative feedback the day before.

At least it would seem someone is reading them at least, so might as well.

And you get a chance to win a gift card! Get someone in trouble and chance for a gift card!

Of course I never win those things, but just saying :3

Yeah, seriously... if an employee ever says something is a "store policy", ask them to show proof or talk to a manager. They have no right to any of your money because it's still technically your money.

I would honestly call the DM about or at least call their main CS line.

EDIT* Here you go OP, check this page and call the number. Hopefully you remember the employee's name.

I think I might just store the store issue number in my phone in case this ever happens to me. Here's a scenario I pictured in my head.

GS: Sorry, you are required to use that $10 towards another preorder.
me: Oh? Is that store policy?
GS: Yes it is...
me: Show me that policy then.
GS: Sorry, can't do that.
me: *dials number* I'm having problems with a Gamestop, they won't refund my preorder. The employee's name is...
GS: Oh wait! That policy...here's your refund...
