Gamestop's Xbox 360 Product Replacement Plan

A little backstory, first:

I got my Xbox 360 on Black Friday of 06, when they offered Call of Duty 2 and the Product Replacement Plan for free. Fast forward nine months or so later, and I'm plagued by the Three Red Rings syndrome. So, I call them up to confirm that I can trade mine out, and they tell me that Microsoft recently upped their warranty for the Three Red Rings to 3 years, so I can't use the PRP until those three years are up, or a different problem happens after their one-year regular warranty is up. So here's the question: I can't remember if the PRP is limited to one year, or for as long as you own that Xbox 360. If it's one year, can I still use mine because of what that guy told me?

Also, when you trade in your broken Xbox, do they give you a brand new one, or a refurbished? And what about your hard drive?, can you keep the one you currently own? And also, do ALL new Xbox 360s come with an HDMI port nowadays?

Sorry for all the questions, but I figured this would be the best place to ask them. This is the right forum, right?

(Talk about any video game deals, video game stores, and game shopping in general; )

Any help would be appreciated!

You don't have any coverage at gamestop anymore so you'll be going the microsoft way. Call them up at 1-800-4MYXBOX and they'll send you a prepaid box the send back your system. From sending the system to recieving it usually takes 2-3 weeks and you will get a different refurbished system instead of waiting more time to replace your own console since it would take awhile. They also send you a 1 month card to recooperate the lost Live time you experienced

Even if your PRP was still valid(which it's not), Gamestop would just tell you to call Microsoft anyway. MS has been cracking down on RROD returns to stores for at least a year and telling the stores to have customers to call MS to get repairs done.

and that's why I consider store warranties a waste of money. There is a very, very small chance that you 360 will break for something that isn't RROD

Back when systems only had a meager 90 day warranty on them(most of the prior gens were like this) the PRP's were a godsend since you could just swap out for a newer model if the companies came out with one typically as long as it was in the same price range as yours. I bought one on my first PS2, which I bought a year from launch, which later on had video problems.

However, I didn't realize that it was my TV that was having the problems and NOT my system, so that one WAS a waste.

But in general, it's easier to just go to the store and swap out a system or tv or whatever than to ship it to the manufacturer and have to wait and wait to get a replacement back. That's why I'm still a big fan of them.

But I'm ONLY a fan of the replacement plans, since most cashiers who 'test' your system only need to hear 'well it malfunctioned for me at my house' to tell you to get a new one, even if it doesn't mess up for them.

I had a three year warranty on mine from GS (got my elite April 29th 07- release day) and it RRoD me in January 08. I brought it in and they said I could just send it back to MS but I refused (since they had the Elites bundled with Forza and MUA), so they just replaced it and gave me a new one right out of the box. The guy tried saying I had to give him my Hard drive, but I argued about it a little and he backed off about it and we switched them. I don't have a warranty now other that MS's, but if it covers RRoD I'm fine with that.

I had to swap my 360 out a few months ago. GS told me to send it to MS, but MS customer service said I would get a different system back, which would void the PRP.

Don't put up with that crap, you paid $50 for a one time replacement, if they won't do it, then ask for your money back.
