Update 1/8: DLC and Patch dated:

A Gears of War update should start pushing through the system at some point tomorrow, Tuesday January 9, 2007 prior to the two new multiplayer maps being available on Xbox Live Marketplace on Wednesday January 10, 2007.

The maps, plus an introductory video featuring Gears designer Cliff Bleszinski, are free thanks to the kind sponsorship by the Discovery Channel's Future Weapons series which launches next Monday January 15th, 2007. Be sure to check out the show to see some really cool firepower. I expect game designers all across the country will be watching the Future Weapons series very carefully looking for ideas for their future games

Here is a list of what was addressed in this update:

• Fixed aspect ratio distortion when using VGA cable with 4:3 displays at resolutions higher than 640x480
• Fixed voice issue with new players joining Player Match games in progress
• Players can now get the Achievement for "Dish Best Served Cold" when using Troika turret to kill RAAM
• Fixed rare situation where host could loop countdown and never start match
• Fixed rare situation where players could get stuck after chainsawing in multiplayer
• Reduced Grenade Tag melee distance
• Enabled “Strict” NAT check on host to prevent possible connection issues
• Optimized server browser queries to return results more quickly and prevent scroll bars from hiding quality of service icons
• Reduced number of possible revives in Execution to match Warzone
• Removed host name from Ranked match server browser
• Disabled security cameras in Ranked matches
• Ranked matches now require balanced teams (3v3 or 4v4)
• Increased penalty for quitting a Ranked match to -50 points
• Added additional cheat detection code
• Additional housekeeping updates

BTW, click here to check out Discovery Channel's Future Weapons series. Be sure to check out the Weapons Zones and see some of the amazing things they showed last season. There was a huge email thread going around Epic about the Metalstorm (which they say is the "potentially the world's most powerful automatic weapon"). It is lacking a chainsaw for close-up combat but it is still pretty coo

Update 12/18: DLC on Hiatus

Mark Rein's response to the Free DLC set for 12/24:
Folks,

This is a hoax.

We've already stated that we are working on releasing an update soon but we don't know the exact date of the release yet because it has not passed certification yet.

I wish the fan sites and online media would check with me first before they post stuff like this. Pretty much all of them have at least my email address (if not my phone number) and I check mail many, many times throughout the day.
Message from Mark Rein VP of Epic

The reaction to Gears of War has been better-than-outstanding. We’re extremely happy that everyone seems to love the game! More Gears of War multiplayer content and functionality is on the way.
It has become pretty clear to us all that Gears of War will undoubtedly be the biggest selling game in Epic’s 15-year history. With a game that has such a wide appeal it is also clear to me that we’re touching a lot console gamers who have never experienced what it is like to buy a game made by Epic Games.
Console customers, for the most part, are used to buying a game and that being, pretty much, the end of what they can expect for that game. That’s not how Epic Games works. We have a long-term history of supporting our games well after release. Since the very first Unreal Tournament game we have had a track record of excellent post-release support.
We’re going to support Gears of War and we’re going to make improvements and enhancements for it.
Right now we don’t have an exact release plan for this but we’re absolutely listening to you, our customers. Keep posting in this forum. Let us know if you find any problems. Let us know what you love and what you don’t love about the game. We’ll do out best to keep you happy playing Gears of War for years to come!

Looks promising.... there's some kinda cool stuff there, but I'm waiting on buying this until I know that the game is actually good. Everything indicates that it'll turn out, but then, it could end up being another Unreal 2.

Passing on it for now, they will over produce this just like every other LE set, unless the art book is truly amazing. Shit, you can get the Prey LE for as low as $35 now. I will probably never watch the bonus DVD, either.

Just the regular edition for me.

I'm done with collectors editions for a while. Its too easy to go on the net and find the extra dvd content. I only watch the stuff once anyways.

Yeah, I got the HALO2 and Doom3 CE, and that's it. Doom at least offered the original Doom. Halo2 was only $5, which is nice.

Where can you get Prey LE for $35? The lowest I've seen it at has been around $45-50. Unless you're talking about Ebay.

I'm a sucker for Collector and Limited editions so I'll definitely pick this up.

Yea, I'm talking about Ebay, I've seen some end as low as $32 recently.
Any idea on the pricing?
$59.99 for the regular, $69.99 for the CE if current regular / CE pricing holds true.

EDIT: It might be $50 / $60 since it's first party, my bad.

Well, I usually go for the collector's edition but I have gotten most of them for a really good price. I got Oblivion for like $40 and Prey for $35 some other were with GR credit so those were even less. If I can get this one a similar price or better I will be all over it.

If they do a decent pricing on the CE or it's on sale first week at Fry's for the same as the regular than i'll pick one up. I always like these metal tins with games and the content is at least decent. Game look amazing so far, but hopefully it lives up to expectations.

When I buy a Collector's Edition of a game, I want hours and hours of bonus material on the dvd. I want Lord of the Rings EE shit if I'm gonna pay an extra ten bucks.

I'm not worried about the game's quality...this is Microsoft's #1 Son until Halo 3 is out. I really doubt they'd let an "ok, but not great" game be their flagship for the time being.

CE looks decent, not as good as Halo 2's (mostly since Halo 2's was only $5 more), but I'm a sucker for DVD makings-of. I'm down.

Does anyone have to worry about the quality of the games put out by Epic?

$70 is not that bad for all the stuff you get IMO (I love art books). But if its $60? Man, I'm all over it. I've been looking forward to GoW since the E3 videos.
Will a faceplate eventually will be offered as part of the CE package???? ;)
Yea, this would have gotten me to buy the LE even at $70. I heard that Gamecrazy is going to get an exclusive Gears of War faceplate, though.
Does anyone have to worry about the quality of the games put out by Epic?
Unreal 2 sucked, and that was their last FPS oriented towards single player. That game was a huge letdown, imo.

Epic did not make Unreal 2. Legend Entertainment did (they also did the Wheel of Time game).

Ah, I just looked on Epic's homepage where they listed it so I assumed they had a hand in it somehow.

I'll hold my breath there.

I dunno, CE's just don't get me unless there's something great added to it. I think Doom 3 CE had a great addition. PC game LE's typically have extra maps and whatnot... I mean, it's not a CE when 2 million or something are printed (like Halo 2).

Kind of makes me think of Limited Edition Pop Tarts or something. What's the point?

Chances are a friend will buy the CE, so I can just borrow the Making of DVD when I see them, and I don't want the box or artbook. If it wasn't a $10 jump and just a $5 jump, I'd get it without even thinking about it.

I've watched the Halo 2 Making of Video a few times and enjoyed it so I'm hoping this one will be kind of like that. Not worth $10 to see it, though.

So the actual disc is held in the metal box like the Halo 2, Splinter Cell, and Doom 3 LEs right? It's not just a metal tin holding a regular game case inside?
I worry about how the two discs are held in that case.
why? like they might just be loose, banging around? i highly doubt it

hopefully its not like the Prey Collectors edition where the disc got marks on it from the tin

it dosent look like it will be but it still bothers me that it is possible
My guess (hope) is that it will have the actuall game with case inside the tin case, kinda like how the Marc Eko CE was packaged.
That's what I'm hoping. It's just nice having the continuity of the cases even having the CEs. I hated how the extra discs in Halo 2 and MK were handled.

Does anyone own the Edward Scissorhands CE or Donnie Darko CE? That is what the the Gears of War case looks like, so yes I would assume that it does come with the actual game case inside.

The metal box is part of a new counter-top display at GS .

I pre-oredered mine at CC , and used the OXM 15% off coupon at the time I pre-ordered , it worked .
Also , I should be getting the faceplate for free from CC as well .

How did the coupon work? Did they ring you up for the full game? 15% off of the $5 deposit?

They scanned the pre-order card then scanned the coupon .
The price ends up being $59.49 before tax .
She said I had to put a minimum of $10.00 down .

So $0.50 cheaper for the LTD ED & a faceplate , is pretty good .

Yeah, lets pretend brute force never happened.

I wish these developers would add exclusive gamerpics and themes in the CE's, it wouldn't be that hard and would help to determine if the extra $10 was worth it.
