Getting an Xbox 360 with Tax Refund: need advice

I'm getting an Xbox 360 Elite with a portion of my tax refund (to finally join the current gen). What are the tell-tale signs of the newest chip revision (Jasper, I believe)? Also, what is the current status of RROD and other issues? Is an extended warranty recommended? Any other information?

I bet if you hit a store that does a lot of volume - a busy Target or Best Buy - you'll get a Jasper without too much worry.
