GI Joe & Transformers Complete TV Series DVD $93.99 & $86.99 @Amazon.com

That's the best price I've seen on the G.I. Joe set and I was keeping an eye on it for quite a while. It was usually hovering around $120 at its cheapest. I ended up ordering the S1.1 and S1.2 sets, as it looks like buying the whole series in sets will come out to around $80 and I was tired of waiting for a price drop on the complete series.

Crap, I went for it. Had a $50 Amazon GC that I hadn't used yet. Both for $130 after the credit.

Nice prices on these, best I've seen yet by far. Don't know what to do though. I'd like both, but that's a hefty price tag. Decisions, decisions...

This sucks!!!! I wasted a $100 dollar gift card for GI Joe a few weeks ago because it was going to expire and I've been waiting on a price drop on it for a long, long time!!!!

I'm probably going to have to take it up the ass on this one as these are apparently limited press sets that aren't being made any more. Kind of fucked because I just did a lifetime sub for STO and both of these sets are another $180 ish. :p

I'm having a hard time deciding what to do. Anybody think we can realistically see lower prices on these sets? If so, how much cheaper? $70?

I want to pull the trigger, but I also want to be confident that I won't see a more significant price decrease anytime soon. Too bad Amazon doesn't still have price guarantee.

Im gonna get the TF set and not even bother to risk a lower price. I think these will go out of print before you see any better prices.

Yes, these actually are OOP, but since they are expensive sets, I don't think they've sold too briskly. I've got to assume that there'll be a point where remaining copies will be clearanced at significant discounts, but by then I assume it'll be that much more difficult to find. I wish I had an answer too. These are pricey premium sets that aren't being made any more, so any deals at this point will be YMMV-type clearances, I think.

Thanks OP, I pulled the trigger on both.
Paid cash for GIJoe and used Trade In credit on Transformers. That way I can tell myself I only SPENT $93 total for both sets! ;)

After the original DVD releases of these series went OOP a few years ago, I really regreted not grabbing them and didn't want to go through that again.

I was just reading that Shout! took the previous Rhino TF release and enhanced it with what they could with the masters making this set actually better than what was previously available on DVD. I guess it's good you missed out on that one...

Thanks OP, picked up both sets. Looks like there's currently 2 GI Joe sets left and 1 Transformers set left.

Edit: Looks like there are more Transformers sets now, more GI Joe sets on the 27th.

After a morning of waffling, I pulled the trigger on both sets. For only $30 for than what I almost paid at Comic Con, I can risk it.

It helped that Deep Discount didn't list the G.I. Joe set for sale anymore.

I pulled the trigger too. I can see these selling out at these prices, and I have poor luck with clearances otherwise.

Ugh. I just pulled the trigger on both. I was hesitant at first, but the G.I. Joe set suddenly being "In Stock on January 27" had me worried that they might sell out sooner rather than later. Now I just have to justify this purchase to my wife. That's not an easy sell.

You and me both, man. :p

I'm thinking these sets were so expensive that they didn't sell too many, so it's possible Amazon will be able to get more. But yeah, if they sell well at this price, they're not going to last too long...

My understanding is that any audio/video problems lie with the masters themselves. They just haven't aged well. These dvds represent the best that can be done in presenting the shows as they originally appeared on TV and FWIW, it's the best you're likely going to get. The reviews I've read are all overwhelmingly positive, so if you're a fan of the shows and don't already have these in previous iterations, then there's no reason not to pick them up if you can afford it.

They have it for $135, but no cover art on the item page. Their site is so clunky after the "redesign".

I can't help but think these will come out on bluray sooner or later. I ordered GI Joe anyway though. I had everything but the unreleased last episodes, but the box set looked nice. in stock 1/29 now. Still considering TF, even though I have all the rhino boxes.

I'm guessing there won't be a Blu Ray on this for a while. Even if a BR version does make it to market, Hasbro hasn't shown any interest in spending the kind of money needed to restore the masters to an acceptable quality for an HD format, so I can't imagine a project like that would come out very well...

Blu-ray would add nothing quality-wise. I can't imagine that the masters are all that high of quality anyway (but maybe I'm wrong). They could potentially condense it all to only a fraction of the discs in these sets, though.

Really, I think the only reason these two sets got these big, nice releases is because of the success of the Transformers movies and the release (and minor success) of the G.I. Joe movie. I don't really seeing sets like this ever being created again. Just not a huge demand for something like this. The market is almost entirely comprised of those of us who were kids in the 80s and loved these shows. No one else in their right mind would watch this junk.
Must... resist...
If you enjoyed these as a kid, don't. A few years ago I rewatched the entire Transformers series (from a BitTorrent download). It was a great nostalgia trip for me. Surprisingly, I still remembered plot lines, even though I hadn't seen any of those cartoons in nearly 20 years. I can't wait to do the same with the G.I. Joe cartoons.

God fucking damn it, I caved and bought both. Not the prices I wanted to spend, but after missing the Lost Blu Ray Seasons 1-5 Steal at $108, although I will definitely get those for less in the future, I don't see a better opportunity for these. Especially after missing the Batman complete animated series set.

I too have to explain this one to the wife, although with my birthday coming up, boom there's my gift. There were a couple of these GI Joe boxed sets available from warehousedeals, but it looks like they're gone.

Depending upon what these sets come with, I might just sell my complete Rhino collections of both series to recoup some or even all of my cost. Although, to give up that cool as hell Snake Eyes figure that came with the original two limited series' release...not sure I can do that. Or the "unique" animation cells that came with the sets.

I also started to buy the new prints of Transformers when they were on sale, probably have to get rid of those. I'm also pissed I never got around to picking up the Sony released 20th anniversary print of the Transformers movie...I have the original Rhino release, but I wanted both.

Should have also picked up the original print of the GI Joe movie, but man, I just can't forgive them for fucking up the story so bad with these Cobra alien life forms and whatnot.

Yeah these sets were put together to coincide with the films (Transformers to also commemorate the 25th anniversary--jeezus has it been that long already lol). The market for a pricey set like this is small and I don't see these being reprinted or repackaged again for quite some time, if ever.

I believe both of these sets used prints from the Rhino release. I read Shout! did a little more color correcting and some audio tweaking to improve the consistency for TF--haven't seen a definitive confirmation for it's treatment of GI Joe, but I suspect it's similar. One thing about the Shout version of GI Joe--they took out the 5.1 track Rhino used. I believe that track had extraneous effects/audio that was not part of the original show but it might be a disappointment if you were interested in that sort of thing.

Thanks a bunch, OP. Price matched to Best Buy on the Matrix Edition Transformers. I already have GI Joe Seasons 1.1 and 1.2 from gifts, so I was able to fight the temptation for that set. At $87, though, I totally had to bite on Transformers.

These sets are from Shout! Factory.

I need to watch this every now and then when I accidentally remember something from the live-action GI JOE movie

Cobraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
So...much....action....at...once....... My head is going to explode from awesomeness. :)

Darn you and that video! Of course I had to watch it and of course that forced my hand at buying the collection. Sigh.... :)

Just bought a house and don't want to foreclose, but I still need the Transformers set! I didn't care about Transformers as much as GI Joe, Voltron, and GOBOTS back in the day (where's the complete GOBOTS set??), but the fraction of people who truly appreciate this stuff dwindles with every year.

From what I've seen, there is also quite a bit of wasted space on the sides of the TF matrix box. Not really into that -- I don't want to fit any more huge DVD cabinets in my house to accommodate air!

But $86 is a damn good price. Grrr!

God I love that intro...why did the rest of the movie have to be such ass?!? The original mini seriesesessses were sooo much better. Hell, even the Serpentor miniseries was better.

But this is just such classic 80's cheesy goodness...the red versus blue lasers (everyone's gun is a damn laser rifle no matter what type of gun it is...and GIJoe guns always shoot red lasers while Cobras always shoot blue...even if they pick up each other's guns), going out of their way to show that no one ever EVER dies.

The most ridiculous thing is Destro handing Cobra Commander the bomb to plant himself, WTF? why wouldn't you send Firefly, that's his expertise. Or maybe even Scrap Iron, or Zartan who could blend in and plant it? Cobra Commander is too hands on. Not that I'm taking it seriously or anything, FLOL.

Gobots...GOBOTS?!? Okay now G. I. Joe, Voltron, and Robotech I could completely understand, among a few other crown jewels of 70's, 80's, and even 90's cartoons/anime. But the mother fucking GOBOTS?!?

Oh hell no. Now you made me go and dig this up. I can't even copy and paste the Q&A between Optimus Prime and Leader One...nsfw due to language...

in for the transformers one I already own the rhino ones but couldnt pass this one up

Damn, just picked up GI Joe Season 2 Part 1 at an FYE that was going out of business ($10 mint condition). Still very tempted to get the complete Joe, though.

Darn it! I was trying to avoid the transformers set since I already have the rhino releases, but it just popped up in my goldbox for $82.64! :bomb:

I picked up Transformers have been wanting it for a while, never was much of a fan of G.I. Joe although if i ever find it in the 50-60 range I might pick it up.

So wish I had the money for this. Both of them for that matter. Holy crap I wants me some Serpentor buildin and Dinobot findin.

If you loved these cartoons growing up, then I highly recommend you pull the trigger. I lagged on pulling the trigger on the complete Batman Animated collection, and that is now long out of print, and can't find it outside of some ridiculous asking prices on amazon.

Warehouse Deals also has 3 copies of Final Fantasy Advent Children on Blu-Ray for $18.99 (too much for me, but perhaps someone else wants it as their current new price is $23.99). Two of the copies' problems are listed as only a small/minor crack on outer case, but still shrink wrapped.
Amazon put my order into "Shipping Soon" status--can't back out now! :p
Shit, man. Mine says "Shipping Estimate: February 1, 2010 - February 2, 2010"

Of course, that's for both sets. I'm worried that amazon will cancel one or both of them as they are now OOP, if they can't get their hands on any more of the GI Joe boxed sets, which was originally the cause of the hold up.

FYI, mine says "Shipping Soon" but gives a shipping estimate of February 1st, so I think you're okay.

I believe Amazon is either looking for a supplier, or waiting on their supplier for more copies. I notice the expected date for Transformers has been pused back a couple times already since the price drop, and GI Joe is apparently at least a two week wait. I think as long as your order is placed, you'll be ok--I think Amazon only canceled an order they couldn't fulfill for me once since I started shopping with them.

My GI Joe already shipped. But my transformers that was placed 2 days ago while it still said "in stock" hasn't shipped, even though I have prime.
