As noted here earler, this is the week that Philadelphia cleaned up its airwaves, purging Glenn Beck as well as Sean Hannity from the radio here. (Beck was also dumped in New York City.) The king of all far-right media supposedly had a soft spot for Philly -- it was living here and broadcasting from WPHT out on City Line Avenue that Beck built his nationwide radio audience in the early-to-mid 2000s.
But now that we're not listening, he told the rest of America what he really thinks of us. "Philadelphia sucks," Beck declares at the end of today's rant, which is focused on his notion -- and feel free to debate this, as I know you will -- that it's not safe to walk around the City of Brotherly Love at 6 p.m. (6 p.m.?) without getting robbed or shot. But rather than me characterizing what Beck said about Philadelphia, listen for yourself:

How is a change in programming on a radio station censoring free speech? It's not like Beck is banned from the city. He's free to get on another station in the area, and is definitely trying to as we speak considering it's a very lucrative area to broadcast to.

I wish people would do a little more research before shouting "Censorship!"

Me neither. What does that have to do with this thread?
What pisses me off is that Beck attacks the ENTIRE CITY as opposed to the actual station that dropped him.
What, you expected Glenn Beck to be rational?

Funny thing is that he does two things:

1) talks about Old City, the wealthiest, safest part of the downtown area and proclaims it to be the most dangerous. That and Society Hill are the neighborhoods around the Liberty Bell. They're both rich, white, and elite. Nothing dangerous at all, aside from perhaps the occasional bar fight.

2) he lumps Camden into the mix, semantically treating it and its problems (laying off 44% of their police just yesterday) as Philadelphia's problem, and not New Jersey's (and by proxy, Chris Christie's).

Dude's just mad he got dropped from WPHT, that's all. Censorship? Show me that he's been censored, dopa.

Lumping together an overall larger number of people (everyone in the city) in with a smaller number of people (the radio station). Damn strange I say.

I've never been to Philadelphia, but the friends who have lived their for school thought it was one of the biggest dumps in the country. Probably doesn't help that they have some of the most offensive and dangerous sports fans too.

Glenn Beck is a bigoted, self-serving, asshole, but if those I know who have spent time in Philadelphia were polled, I think the result would be "Philadelphia sucks".

Philly is a fine city. Has more than it's fair share of crappy areas and crime. But also a ton of great stuff. It's maybe the best city in the country for beer snobs--lots of great beer bars around town, great art museum, lots of neat historical stuff.

Never visited as much as I'd like during my time living in the DC/Baltimore area, but had a great time every time I did make it up there.

Wow I can't believe I actually agree with this nut job! Philly IS a shithole. Other than Baltimore it is probably the least desirable city to be in along the entire east coast. It has almost nothing to offer (other than delicious cheesesteaks) that other major cities less than a 2 hour drive away (NY and DC) have and do much better.

Haa haa. Very much so. But when it provides me a chance to disparage the city of Philadelphia, my ethics look the other way ;)

Don't get me started on NY and Boston!

Aren't you from Eugene, OR?

I had a conversation w/ a friend once about sports team names for largely liberal metropolitan areas. I think that we decided the first pro sports team in Eugene had to take the team name Black Bloc. There was also the San Francisco Condescending Glances, and the Madison .

Can't recall the others, though.

Ha! I like it. I have lived in both Eugene and the CA Bay Area (about 5 minutes from Berkeley). Now I'm a bit north of Eugene actually.
