GMR Magazine to fold in February

Scahom1

CAGiversary!
Hey guys, just got an e-mail from my District Manager at EB Games letting us know that GMR magazine is being discontinued. Their last issue will be February 05. Customers can either roll over their subscription to EGM or get a refund of any unpaid for issues.

Kinda sucks to hear that, since I really liked the magzine. Just thought I'd let you guys know.

Hmm..interesting. I wonder why. I too was really starting to enjoy the magazine. Wasn't the Decemeber issue there 3 year anniversary issue or something like that? I loved some of the coupons they had in it also. Loved when I got Midway Arcade treasures 1 for 9.99 and Rainbow six 3. Do you know how we are supposed to roll over it to EGM? Do we ask in store or email them or will they just do it automatically?

I never picked up one of their magazines. I looked at one that reviewed DDR Ultramix 2 and they gave it a 4/10. I then vowed to never read anything in that mag again...

Ouch... I'll miss them, that's for sure... I just think there are so many game mags out there, you just had to consider the options already out there. After all, EGM had to disolve their brand extension EGM2/Expert Gamer a few years ago... and yeah, if you got issues of this mag, you should keep them. I still remember when Incite magazine came out with its 99 cent price tag and then they JACK the price way up and had to fold within that same year...

GMR was a good mag, but the only mags i'll ever miss are PCAccelerator and Next Genertaion. now those were quality (and no, that wasnt sarcasm)

I have a few issues of GMR a friend gave me and while its too bad to see a videogame mag go under, I wasn't all that impressed with GMR. Now if only Gamepro would go out of buisness.

PC Accelerator kicked ass.

The publisher, Ziff Davis, will be mailing out the announcement with the option of a refund or switch over to EGM.

I don't think this has anything to do with a low subscription rate. After all, most people got it no matter if they wanted it or not, thanks to the EB discount card. I think Ziff Davis just wanted to eliminate the magazine that kinda shadowed EGM. Now they have 1 magazine for every format: multi-platform (EGM), as well as PC (Computer Gaming World), XBOX (XBOX Nation) and PS2 (Official Playstation Magazine). Nintendo of course won't let anyone else have an official magazine.

Does this mean Edge cards will now be sold with an EGM sub? Or is the rollover a one-time deal for those whose GMR sub isn't up yet?

Well, now that I look at the edtors of the magazine (some of which contribute to EGM, such as Milkman), I see their reasoning. In a way, I think it's because of GI and NOT EGM. GI basically was first in their relationship with Gamestop, and EB sort of came along and said 'LOL, look at us, we have a magazine too, and it will be so kewl.' And you know what: they were 'kewl': I get both GI and GMR in the mail, but I look forward to GMR more because of their content and reviews. It wasn't sarcasmheavy like EGM, laughable like Gamepro is, or dry humor like GI. It just felt like a comfortable magazine.

Edge cards were no longer being sold with the GMR magazine.

So GMR goes the way of GameNow. I TOTALLY didn't see that coming.

*cough*
I'm only worried about what will happen to Milkman. I hope they give him back a job at EGM. Him and Mark are my two favorite editors.

I just about cried when the Official Dreamcast Magazine was discontinued. It was and still is the best magazine I've ever read.

ODCM will always be my favorite.

I remember the first time I saw it. It was the first issue with Sonic on the cover. I read all about the Dreamcast and was hooked right then.

Yea, out of all the mags i recieve, the only one I sorta paid for was gmr because of the edge card. And I enjoyed reading it the most. My fav sections are the ones where they go back and visit a classic series or genre and give then and now ratings.

Crap, your right. I forgot about that. I think a couple of Next Gen guys were on there too. I still have my ODCM disks... I remeber seeing the vid trailers for PSO and Grandia 2...the wow factor on those two were amazing.

i miss DC...

Don't be so quick to believe this rumor. I write for them on occasion, and I'm pretty sure I would've heard something if it was true. In fact, I'm scheduled to do my normal column for March.

Now that I think of it, so do I. Official Dreamcast Monthly was the best one console magazine I have ever read. Even better than OPM. I was really sad when they cancelled it.

That was one of the best mags ever. I still have every issue (including the preview issue) and every disc. The DC era was one of the funnest times i've had with gaming.

HAHA, wow that's such great timing. My subscription runs out in February. On a side note though that really sucks cause at the very least I liked getting the coupons for EB in there.

I have a few issues as well. They are awesome.
