My 32GB is almost maxed out and I was hoping to get some suggestions for an upgrade. I don't need a ton of space (250GB at the most). Would prefer something that doesn't have to be powered separately and doesn't cost a ton. Any good suggestions?

If you want something that doesn't need to be powered your going to need a "Y" adapter cable for a usb hard drive that uses 2 usb slots instead of one. Because the wii u doesn't output enough power from the usb ports.

Depending on how much stuff you download/buy. You may just want to buy a 32/64gb usb flash drive. Which are from 15 - 30 bucks. Then in a couple years when that gets full. Just get a larger one then.

^ He's right on both accounts. You'll need a Y cable (not expensive) for an external HDD. You can get a Western Digital or Seagate 320 gig for around 50ish from Amazon or Newegg (maybe even cheaper).

The flash drives, range from 4 to 32, are also fairly cheap now. You also don't need the extra cable for those.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do my friend. :)

Is that something specific to the Wii U that requires Y-cable external HDDs? I mean, I have used multiple external drives and 1x USB2 is enough to power 2.5" external drives. USB2 specs should allow for sufficient power for 2.5" HDDs... unless Nintendo cheaped out.

Sucks the Wii U doesn't have USB3.0.

Vinny, it is specific to the Wii U, Nintendo uses low power usb ports for the console (something the original Wii didn't use). I think they did it as a cost saving feature, but it is kind of a dumb decision. Since gaming has moved to online. And Nintendo tries to ignore that.
