So yeah, it is is the older model and we all know how those things go. It also came with a 1 year warranty plan from Gamestop. I'm thinking of exchanging it but I'm not sure. I need advice from people who know had dealt with RRoDs before and Microsoft exchange program. I'm weighing in my options still and I have a couple of questions:

1) I kind of want to exchange it to the latest slim model but I'm hearing mixed reviews of its failure rate as compared to the older model. Exchange it to a newer model? Can I exchange it in any Gamestop store or does it have to be the origin store of the refurb?
2) It seems this refurb wasn't registered yet. Am I still eligible to the 3 year warranty from Microsoft?
3) Exchange it for something else like a Wii?

Don't really want option 3 because I've been itching to play some 360 exclusives.

It has a HDD? I'd say keep and play it. If GS has a warranty on it, then, you're covered for a year (at least). I think you'd still get the Microsoft warranty if it's unregistered. (Though, I'm not sure on that.)

I mean, worst case, you play it for a while before you (maybe) have to get a replacement unit. A RRoD won't kill your saves or anything (which is far more important than the console itself).

What's the problem? You have a year to basically run the system 24/7 LOL! If it fails, ship it to MicroSoft and they'll fix it in about two weeks.

Take it to GS, actually.

I know, but I doubt it's going to fail in the first year. If they're anything like Microsoft with repairs, he/she should be good. I had mine repaired by Microsoft in early 2008 for RROD and have had no problems since.

From my experience, they aren't. The return process is a breeze, since I'm pretty sure its just a swap out. Either way, OP, I'd keep it. That warranty at GS is pretty good. I had one on a DS back when the Lite's came out and almost a year to the day of purchase the right bumper went dead. Drove down and got a new one, just keep the receipt, but I'm sure they should have your info anyway.

The thing is insured for three years, and for the first year Gamestop will give you a new one at the drop of a hat, so worst case scenario is a minor inconvenience. As a Slim owner, I don't think there's any real reason to fret over not having one. The only thing I'd worry about is backing up your saves.

As for the Microsoft warranty, I'm virtually positive it starts when you register it, because for all they know you bought it brand new today. Though when my fat 360 RROD'd I went to Microsoft and they told me my three year warranty expired after 18 months and wouldn't pay to fix it because the second richest man in the world couldn't spare ninety bucks.

Thanks for the advice. I guess I'll keep it then.

I guess I could try fixing it if it decides to RRoD after warranty. Thankfully I have experience with that stuff.

Here's my two cents: I bought a NEW arcade from wal-mart, it lasted 1yr-7mos. the DVD drive died. What I did was buy a GS used with a 1yr warranty. Now in 10-12mos. I'm going to return it claiming defective, swap it out for another used/refurb and purchase another 1yr warranty($20), rinse and repeat. This way I never keep one 360 for more than a year and it's always covered by warranty if it does crap out before the selected time frame. I'll send my original 360 to M$ to get fixed at later date for backup.
