Got a PS3 on the cheap... but I have a conundrum

Hey all,

I have a small conundrum here. I was at a GS buying a controller for my ps2 when a guy rolls in and tries to sell his ps3. The GS associate quotes $240 for it. The store didn't have enough cash so I offered to fork over the cash for the ps3, seeing as how he said he needed the cash badly. Hey, karma points plus a PS3... umm yeah.

So I got a 60GB PS3 for $240!!!!!!!! :D

Here is where my conundrum comes in. I don't have even close to a good enough TV (just a CRT, and not big either).

Should I sell it or keep it???????

This is the one with the hardware PS2 emulation as opposed to the software emulation in the 80GB and any future PS3 to be produced. Man I really want to keep it, but I can't justify having a PS3 on this POS tv of mine. I looked on CL and I can probably sell it for $400.

I'm not super hyped on the games on it. I got Warhawk (not bad, just leaves me craving Halo 3, that i don't have) and motorstorm (meh). Blue Ray would be pretty sweet, as it can put out a 1080p signal, but don't have a TV that can handle it, nor do I see buying one anytime soon.

What would you guys do in my situation? Sell it for $160 profit or keep a PS3 for $240?

Mo' money, mo' problems.

Depends on whether or not you're getting an HDTV, and whether or not you have a 360. If you have a 360, you're not getting an HDTV, or both, then just sell it- especially before that 40 GB one comes out.

You kiddin'? The 40gb release will only drive up demand for the 20 and 60gb versions because of the BC.

I would keep it, but since I bought a PS3 at retail (with store credit), that shows my bias.

Ask yourself if you will want a PS3 anytime within the next two years. Then ask yourself if backwards compatibility is important to you.

If you think you can get $400 on CL for it, ask yourself this:

Would you buy a PS3 if you didn't have one for $400? Your choice isn't between a PS3 and a $160 profit, it is between a PS3 and $400. The value of the PS3 in your area is ~$400, so if it is worth less than that to you, than sell it. If it is worth that or more than that to you, than keep it.

Think of everything else you can buy for $400 (perhaps a nice TV), and if you would rather have those things than the PS3, than sell it and buy those things or just save the cash for something in the future.

I'd sell it and buy a nice tv :)

I plan on getting a decent tv sometime this winter and only after that will I consider getting a PS3 or 360.

The only exception is if BC is very important to you, otherwise PS3s will be less than $400 by the time you have the tv for it.

Sell and get a TV, agreed there. There won't be enough of a software catalog until at least mid 2008 and you could easily re-buy one with the money you make now and still be profiting. Good catch.

Thanks for the thoughts everyone. I just saw a blurb on g4tv this evening and they talked about the ps3 losing harware emu. So they were saying get it quick if you want one!

I'm still thinking about it though.

What's this nonsense about 'not a good enough tv for it'? To me, ANY old tv would be 'good enough' for my gaming purposes, since I feel the LCD/plasma tvs are WAYYYYYYY overpriced considering how long the tech has been out now.

Keep the PS3 and play to your hearts content, happy in the knowledge that you have one of the PS3 models with near FULL BC, which is something many other people won't have that luxury to have. AND, you got it for LESS than half of what it retailed for originally.

You definitely got a cheapass deal, good job, now stop contemplating selling it and GO PLAY IT.

Keep the console and save up for a nicer TV. $400 alone won't get you the TV you want to use the PS3 on.

Additionally, you won't be able to get a PS3 for $240 anytime soon, so that $160 profit you're thinking of will suddenly reappear when you need to buy a PS3 for your swanky new TV.

You've already saved $260 on the cost of the system, and no matter which way you cut it, you're not going to recoup that savings elsewhere, whether you sell it or keep it.
