Got over $600 free. What should I do? (paypal/bank)

I know this isn't really a deal but it's something I took advantage of unintentionally.

So last month my paypal account was hacked and some jerks took over $600+ straight from my bank account. It took about 3 weeks to resolve it and Paypal reversed the transactions. The money would remain on my Paypal account and I would have to transfer it to my bank account. I didn't do that until today because the withdrawals from paypal and overdraft fees were cleared from my bank account.

So before all of this happened, I remember having about $230. And when I completely transfer all the money to my bank account I will have a total of $678.

I don't know why but I am still worried. By the way, I have no idea what happened with my original $200 that was in my bank account. When I checked today, it was at $0 (since they cleared all the paypal and overdraft fees). Do you think I should call my bank and ask what happened to it?

But yeah, I'm still worried something will happen. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm confused as shit, lemme see if I got this right.

You had $230 before all this happened but somehow, some fucker took $600+ from your bank account through PP even though you only had $230? And now, you're getting the $600+ back but you don't know what happened to the $230?

So basically, you lost $230?

Doesn't your bank keep a record of what happened when, that you could access and see where the $230 went? I'm pretty sure that's a basic rule for any bank to keep records...:whistle2:|

I don't see how you're going to make $600 on this. Wouldn't your bank balance have been in the red and most of the money being refunded would go back to the bank directly since they paid it out? You should look at your last statement before all this happened and make sure you get whatever was in it back though. They'll probably figure it out and if you went and spent it, and then they realized their mistake after, you'll owe them, and they could press charges, I suppose.

Kinda. Paypal refunded all the money which was $600+. I didn't transfer it to my bank account because I had to take care of the overdraft fees.

So I called my bank and told them my paypal was hacked, blah blah blah. My bank account was at -$700 (which includes paypal transactions & over draft fees). They took care of this and reversed all the fees. So my bank account is now at $0.

And yeah, I basically lost $230 but gained $400. lol. I'm going to double check all of this because I'm confused. I am 100% sure I had about $230 before all of this happened because I don't work. The only money I get is from my family and they don't give me much.

Another reason why I'm glad I didn't link my account to my paypal.

I would definitely check with your bank though before you end up in any sticky situations. Go back and check your last statement for sure.

You should get this straightened out though asap.

If I were you... I wouldn't take that extra money. It just seems too risky.

I'm guessing you losing out on the $230 was your bank's fault, somehow.

As others have said, figure this out fast. Go to your bank and actually see someone and talk to them about it. Then get in touch with PayPal and see what they say.

You might wanna consider closing both your PP and bank account and starting new ones. And keep track of any other credit cards you have, no telling what kind of info the hackers got.

You really should go into your bank and sit down with an "advisor" or whatever they are called. I know everybody hates doing this but it's the safest way. Explain the story to them. Maybe they recommend you close the account. Maybe there is a way to block paypal transactions for a while. Be sure to get their name, too, so if the shit hits the fan again, at least you have somebody who might just remember your story and help you out.

That $600 might be from the government if you didn't change your bank account information on a tax return. You should gave the money from the bank and then reclose your account. If you still have access to your paypal account, just change the password and bank account information. Just make up some fake bank account informatioin up so no one could withdrawl your $$$ before you can.

Bingo. That's what I bet it is. Mine's getting deposited sometime next week, according to the IRS. If you got your refund by direct deposit and your social security number ends in the range 00-25 that's almost certainly what it is.

Except it was $678, and put into PayPal, not his bank account.

This is the timeline as I understand it:

- Bank account has $230, PayPal account has $0
- Hacker gets access to PayPal account
- Hacker transfers $678 from bank account -> PayPal
- Bank account goes negative, lands at -$700 after overdraft fees
- Hacker uses money in PayPal account, leaving it at $0
- At this point, bank account has -$700, PayPal account has $0
- OP contacts both PayPal and his bank
- PayPal refunds the money
- Bank brings balance up to $0
- At this point, bank account has $0, PayPal account has $678

You don't owe the bank anything. In fact, you could probably argue that the bank still owes you $230, but I don't think I'd go that far. PayPal, on the other hand, may have gotten screwed in all of this. They probably paid back your bank, as well as added the $678 back into your PayPal account.

Doubtful. He said that his family is his only source of income and even if he did file tax I would guess that his parents are claiming him, since he still receives money from them.

That's correct. I'm thinking of just keeping the money. I asked my dad for advice and he said to keep it. I asked "what if I get in trouble and have to pay it back?" and he said "well you'll pay it back". I assume he is going to pay all of it if I get in trouble. lol.

By the way, a hacker made another transaction a few days ago. They spent about $50 on Steam using my paypal funds. I'm currently trying to resolve this too. lol. That's before I found out my bank had cleared the balance to $0.

I hope I dont get in trouble. So many games I have to buy.
