Just as the title implies.

I'm selling off my desktop along with my monitor along with some other stuff so I should have maybe around $1600-1800 to spend right away, but I can save more if need be.

What's the deal with laptops these days, are they easier to work with in terms of maintenance/upgrades?

Are there certain brands to stick with and others to avoid?

In terms of specs/performance, I'm lookin' for around 2GB RAM, and an Intel(I was eyeing the E6750) + Nvidia(I prefer EVGA branded Nvidia stuff, a 7900GT or above is my preference).

Are there reputable sites or stores that would aid me in customizing my laptop with reasonable prices or are there any coupons floating about that would help me as well?

Thanks for any help.

Yea don't get an HP or Compaq. i recommend an Acer or an Asus, high preformance for a decent price $$. Some Dells are okay as well. Check out Newegg

I bought a CyberPower for around $900
came with: 2.0 ghz Core 2 Duo, Geforce 8600M GT, 2GB RAM, 120GB hard drive
thing is that I chose to not include an OS (since I already had Vista on me), so that's why it was cheaper

and OP, you realize you can't really use desktop PC parts in laptops, right?

I dunno if it's the most comprehensive list, but you can look for deals here

They also have a section for Dell Coupons

Whatever you do DO NOT get an Acer. They cost less (I think) but the quality is terrible. One of my room mates has one and it often boots up without its sound working or wireless networking.

I personally recommend HP. I've had one for half a year and have had absolutely no problems with it other than a little bit of junk installed when I bought it. If I had as much money as you I would go with:
http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/s...cHQQQMnDbnF2JdPT8hTFfJt1p66xSvP9Z!-1329782849
and then personalize it with the best video card and processor (and make sure to get the free hard drive and webcam upgrades). At that point it would be only $1344 (for a 2.5 ghz Core 2 Duo, Geforce 8600M 512 mb, 3 GB Ram, and a 320 gb hard drive). The same computer from Dell would cost a few hundred dollars more. Then you will have plenty of money you could use to get a better battery, monitor, or a case or something. I'm not sure if there are any coupons out right now, but recently you could get $400 off (or $250 off since there is an automatic $150 off at the site right now) which would make it only around $1100.

OK I found a coupon for HP:
NB0500 for $400 off most laptops $1400 and up
Now that laptop I just customized would only cost $1096. You could pretty much max it out (extra battery, blu-ray drive, best screen, carrying case, 4 gb ram etc) and should still come out well under $1800. For a top of the line gaming laptop it doesn't get much cheaper than that.

Didn't know HP's were bad, I have an HP that I am selling, Core duo, 4gb ram, 250gb hd, and nvidia geforcego 7400 GPU, had it for a while and love it, just need the cash more than the laptop right now, never had any problems with it.....laptops are never meant to game if you are not within cord reach of an outlet otherwise they are decent for gaming, of course desktops are better but laptops are getting MUCH better than they used to be

I think you could also find some deals if you get one of the new Toshiba Satellite X205-SLI machines......as far as I can tell, they are the cheapest SLI laptops on the market, I am actually waiting for Fed-Ex to deliver mine.....I got a deal on a refurb for $999.....comes with core duo 2 ghz processors, 2gb ram, twin 120gb hard drives and TWO nvidia 8600 gpus.....I'm going to switch out the four gigs of ram from my current laptop and keep my 250 gig hd, so I'll have one 120 gig hd and one 250 gig hd, and I'll sell my current laptop with 2 gigs ram and 120 gig hd to pay for most of the cost of the new one.....looking forward to playing with sli on a laptop

FYI, a mobile 8600gt will be slower than a desktop 7900gt. I would look for something with an 8800gts/gtx.

This is what I have. It is pretty good but the processor is a little slow (I plan on popping a new one in pretty soon).

Also, the Clevo/Sager laptops are probably your best bet if you can scrounge up $2k. They are what some of the best laptops available are based on. XoticPC offers great service, if something goes wrong you don't have to deal with India to get it fixed.

a mobile 8600 slower than a desktop 7900??? Do tell, what kind of resolutions and/or framerates do you get on some modern games? I've got mmost games running like a breeze at resolutions I've never seen before on my old computers.....granted, I haven't tried Crysis yet, but Gears, COD4 and others work unbelievable with moobile 8600's......I'm curious to know where you get this information

8600m gt has a core speed of 475mhz which is considerably slower than its desktop counterpart. The 7900gt is slightly faster than a desktop 8600gt in most tests and outright destroys it in some others.

So we really should not be suggesting laptops that come with an 8600m.
