Half-Life 2 homage

Okay now, obviously Half-life owes a lot to 1984, but what other books or games do you think the whole franchise owes a lot too?
 
I should hope that the friendly-faced big brother fascism government is public domain by this point.

Calling it a homage also kinda undersells the absolutely spectacular writing of it all.

HL1 was a homage to all things "SCIENCE EXPERIMENT GONE WRONG"/"OH NOES, ALIENS" as well as Quake, given that it built off the Quake engine and nicked a good deal of the weaponry.
 
Half Life 2 owes a lot to electricity and the invention of the wheel. Without them, we would not have computers and there would be no dune buggy section of the game.
