Hard drive space question

CAGiversary!
i have a 20GB HD and there's 5GB free but only 9GB taking up space. wheres my other 6 GB?? i need to rip GTA4 to the HD because it makes my xbox go into over drive.

There is some stuff that comes preloaded that you can delete (game demos, videos, etc) that take up a few gigs. I also believe that a certain portion of your HDD is automatically taken up for the operating system (for caching/swap) and part of it is also reserved for space needed to run backwards compatible games from the XBox 1. Check this link for more info:

In other words, even if you delete absolutely everything off your 20 GB drive, you still will only have about 14 GB free.

Yeah its not any preloaded stuff thats taking the space up (as I thought when I first got my 360). For the 20GB HDD, around 6GB is reserved for system use.

As other have said the 20gb hdd is only 13.xx GB. The rest of that space, over 6 gigs, is reserved for shit you can't delete, like the new look dashboard/blades and lame Avatar stuff.

I think that most of that 6 gigs is actually used for cache/swap space and for Xbox 1 backwards compatibility. The NXE itself only uses like 130mb and any avatar DLC you acquire probably just goes into your normal HDD space.

i didnt realize this, i always thought i saw like 16/17gb free at one point. oh well i'll delete as much as i possibly can. playing games from the hard drive is the best, quiet and doesnt make my xbox sound like its going to explode because the disc and fan is going in over drive. thanks for the replies.
