All of the harvest moon are good, except for Save the Homeland. That was the worst one they made. The game is much more than childish, it involves making a business!
Sadly I never played the SNES version, but my fave is probably a tie between HM for the GB which is the first one I played or HM 64 which I probably put the most time into (exteremely addicting gameplay). And yes it's quite hard to find HM 64, I paid like $40 or something (cart only) for it about 3 years ago or so and I hear it still goes for around that much at a lot of places.
HM 64. First one i had, just seems to be put together the best.
Friends of Mineral Town is a close second, then Back to Nature.
Only US HM i havnt played is Save the Homeland, and i dont really regret it from what ive heard.
I never really liked the PS1 version. The load times just killed it for me after being spoiled by Harvest Moon and Harvest Moon 64 and their complete lack of them.

Yes, and the fact that it took forever to complete.
