Has anyone's Wii crashed?

I recently received my Wii (a little before Christmas) from a contest and everything seemed great. Worked perfectly fine, had extra remotes/nunchuks, plenty of games.

Then, while playing Resident Evil 4, the game froze when exiting the merchant about halfway through the game. Completely unresponsive. Buttons did nothing. The power button did nothing. Eject. Nothing. It just kept humming this consistent sound from the speakers. I winced and was forced to unplug it.

I started it up again and it did the exact same thing on the same spot. Started it up again and performed all of my actions slower... it got through.

So, I figured, what they hey... it's probably just a bad disc. But then, while playing Spiderman: Web of Shadows the other day, it froze randomly. Once again completely unresponsive and sustaining a high pitched hum from the speakers.

Anyone else run into this? I checked the fan and it seems clear (something Nintendo recommended on their website). I'm worried that I'll have to send it back. Will they make me pay for shipping to Nintendo?

I've had it happen a couple times over the last 2 years. Each time I just disconnect/reconnected the power and went right back to what I was doing, minus anything I lost since the last save. The problem never repeated with the same game/spot. My Gamecube does the same thing. Can never get it to repeat under the same circumstances, though.

For what it's worth, I only play Wii games w/ the Wii, GC games w/ the GC...therefore no GC games in the Wii lockup issues I can discuss.

It happened to me randomly a couple of times but I'm not 100% sure since I can't remember so far back in time to the last time I actually played my Wii. ZING!

Oh javeryh... you are quite the riot. Where did you ever get such a zany and original sense of humor... and so much free time?

I like the material, but the delivery kind of ruined it.

I've had it happen to me a couple of times, I would have to hold the power button down for it to do anything.

Same here. It seems to happen more with first party games, and more when a disc has been left in the console and it attempts to boot right after powering up. Even still, it happens pretty rarely and I have also had my Wii for two years.

Thanks I'll be here all week.

yeah, I was sloppy at best. Oh well, maybe next time!

Mine actually did a couple days ago for the first time.
I just tried to load the Nintendo Channel and it locked.
I just tried to load the Nintendo Channel and it locked.
Now that you mention it, the Nintendo Channel also locked on me a couple weeks ago.

My GPU got fried a while back. I sent my Wii in, they paid for shipping and I had it back in two weeks. Nintendo's customer service is fast and friendly, from my experience. The polar opposite of Microsoft's.

ya i still need to send my wii in had it since launch and every so often i get the scary clunk and the game wont load...i have smash bros happens sometimes with that im just gonna send it in with the whole smash bro recall thing...It sucks cause i just started playin the wii again more...got to wait till i get a job so i dont miss the down time ha

Thanks for the replies, guys. I'm going to back up my files to a Micro SD and be sending it back to Nintendo.

I just read the other thread about the loud Wii, and I have the same problem. It runs silently, but whenever it's reading the game, there's a loud whirring. This happens with every game, no exceptions, and I thought this was normal. I figured people just didn't notice it because the normal gameplay volume usually compensates for it.

ALSO, I haven't done a system update yet. Could that be the problem?

I've had Super Mario Galaxy fail to load after inserting the disc on maybe two or three occasions, and one time when Mario Kart Wii froze up between races. No problems with any other games so far. I've had the Wii for a little over a year and though I don't use it a ton, I chalked these up as normal (I've had similar problems with PS2 games once in a blue moon). If it started happening any more often than I might get worried.

Just a few random freezes over the years. A quick powerdown/reboot always does the trick.

I got the DRE issue w/ mario kart & smash... called nintendo and sent in my system...
minor freeze here and there no big deal..

I now have to put our Wii in the yes column. We just got the Wii this xmas. It was purchased a few months prior.

I'm not exactly sure what happened. My kids were playing a Spongebob game ("Globs of Goo" or some such title - the latest one, I believe) they borrowed from the library and they had stopped playing and when I went to the Wii it was still powered on (light green), but the TV picture was black. I pressed buttons on the Wii remote and nothing happened. I pressed the power button and nothing happened. I pressed the reset button and nothing happened. I tried pressing and holding reset and pressing and holding power and pressing eject and pressing and holding eject. Nothing did anything. Finally I had to pull the power cord from the back and then plugged it back in. I asked my kids if they had done anything odd when they stopped playing but they didn't think so. They think they just hit the power button to turn the Wii off. Very strange.

We have the latest firmware. Maybe there are bugs in it. If so I hope they get a fix out soon.

 It won't read any discs now.
Oh well.

$75 down the drain. Can't wait to call them. They better no ruin the amount of VC/WiiWare games I have...

I have always gotten the occasional error, but as I mentioned before it's rare, not consistent and doesn't seem to be getting worse ever. If I do find myself in your unfortunate situation, does it only cost $75 for Nintendo to fix an out-of-warranty Wii? If so, that's better than I expected. It still sucks, but it's better than $250+tax for a new one.
You should try that wii cleaning kit first. Maybe it won't do any good, but maybe it will do the trick and it's a lot less money. Probably something you should have anyway. Here is a link to at Nintendo's online store.

Hopefully that link works....
Not a bad idea - thanks! I always forget stuff like that exists for CDs and DVDs (I was happy to walk away from cleaning the heads of cassette players and VCRs and not look back) and $10 is not that expensive. It looks like a basic lens cleaner, so I'll see if I can find one locally for cheaper in the next few days but if not the prices seem all about the same online.

Mine has locked up on random occasions (nothing that I remember recently) while loading a channel. I think it was fixed by holding down the power button.

It has heating issues. But it has only froze up on me maybe twice the entire time I have owned my Wii, and I got it 2 months after it came out. So not a huge deal. It is freakingly loud though.

Mine used to lock up frequently (once or twice a week) when transitioning between tasks like from the Wii menu to loading a channel. Sometimes it was immediately after loading the Disk channel it would go to a black screen. Then there were the occasional Zelda lockups, but nothing a complete powerdown and re-boot couldn't fix. It did lock up at least once, maybe twice during RE4.

I've had it lock up maybe 4 times over the last two years, and at least 2 of them were the doors in Metroid Prime 3 doing it. It's been a long time since I've had that happen though, and before anyone trys to turn that into a joke, I use my Wii almost every day(mostly Animal Crossing, Tales of Symphonia DotNW, & Rock Band 2 lately).

This is what is happening to mine also. It started with the latest firmware.

Mine is going to be 2 years old this March and I haven't had any problems with it yet when playing Wii games. I did lock up on me once with a GC game though with a copy of Mario Baseball with some minor scratching- but after cleaning it up, it worked fine.

On the other hand, my Wii hasn't been used very much...:whistle2:|

I got the Wii 6 months ago, and so far nothing happened. But I did notice some slowdow in the Wii Menu when my Wii was almost out of Memory Blocks. Backed a few VC Games on a SD and now everything is fine.

I get the occasional crash, always the same - game freezes, loud, high-pitched buzzing from the speakers. I have to hold the power button and reboot. It has occurred with both Wiiware and disc games, but is not repeatable. I get no graphical distortion whatsoever...

Hmm...mine is 2 yrs old? It locked up once loading a channel. It locked up once in the middle of a bowling game (4 players). It may have locked up one other time, but obviously hasn't done so much and not on the same thing twice.
