Have you ever gotten a game for free for doing absolutely nothing?

CAGiversary!
I'm not talking about through some of the excellent trade-in deals that EB and other used game stores give, but rather just for doing nothing; like a nice employee who gives you a cheap (even if it is crap) game or through a garage sale? The only games that I have ever gotten for free are when they're demo discs, though once a really nice EBgames store employee gave me a free, albeit, crappy game.

Edit: Ooh..I just remember another time I got something free. It was the first Game Boy I had gotten (one of the Brick ones), but I won one of them and Donkey Kong for GB for free after winning some contest through some Wheaties promotion.

Edit: Thought of some other games that I've gotten for free. A while back, probably 3-5 years (don't remember exactly), my friend was having a garage sale. He was selling a lot of N64 games (some with cases and manuals too) for just about the price that he would have gotten them had he traded them in, but instead got money; he never really cared for the EBgames promotions or anything of that sort. So basically I bought a ton of N64 games and got Turok 2 and Turok: Rage Wars for free since he was in a really good mood that he had just sold out of most of his games to me.

Those "Stop the lights at the right time and win a game/cd player/gameboy" machines dropped a copy of Ghost Recon 2 and my GF grabbed it.

Thats about the closest you can get to free

YEARS ago (1992), I received a Turbo Touch 360 controller for my Super NES for no apparent reason through the mail (tho I had a Super Fami... hehe - had to get Final Fight on day one in Japan!). The controller actually wasn't half bad and was a big precursor to the analogue pads to come out later. I wrote a thank-you letter and gave them feedback about the experience (which they didn't require/ask for... thought it would be nice for their research department).

When in college I had focused part of my studies on Marketing Research and contacted many companies doing research and ended up getting a lot of freebies from toothpaste to air fresheners. It didn't hurt doing a project with Kellogg's and getting free cereal and Rice Krispie treats the entire quarter. Saved mega $$$ on breakfast! :)

I never got an actual game for free unless it was the Metroid or Zelda promos that Nintendo does if you buy so many of their games, etc.

Earned that Zelda promo disc thru a subscription to Nintendo Power (my how the mightiest of gaming magazines have fallen) and a free copy of GT3: A-Spec from that Kellogg cereal promotion (thanks to CAG and Gamefaq'ers for posting the contest codes).

When the N64 launched Nintendo had a contest where you had to identify something like 50 games from screenshots. Many were easy but a few were very obscure. I collaborated with a friend and we both entered. He won a copy of Wave Race which he gave to me since he'd already bought the Japanese version.

Another friend is a guy whose been writing about computers since before much of the CAG membership was born. Several publishers sent everything they produced for review, including console games he was never going to give a single glance. Over the past ten years I've probably gotten about 150 games this way. Some of them were keepers and a lot of other were traded for more desirable titles.

A guy I barely knew in high school was cleaning out his locker during one of the last days of the school year, and it was a mess - truly filthy. So he pulls out a crusty (I'm being literal here), caked-in-some-kind-of-grime-and-dirt SNES cartridge and asks if I want it. He didn't even know if it worked. I go, "Sure!"

The game? Final Fantasy II.

The thing was so battered that if I took the game out, bumped the console while it was in it, or even jiggled the cart a bit, the battery got erased. This led to many restarts. But it was worth it.

I'm at my local Gamestop, and decide to open the case to KOF 2000/2001 (keep in mind this is back when it had been released) to see the game art on the booklet. Turns out they had removed the 2000 disc, yet left the 2001 in there. So I shout out to the guy, "Dude, you left the 2001 disc in here for KOF." Looking at me like im stupid or something, he says, "Oh, don't worry, thats just a demo, you can have it if you want it." Hell, who am I to complain to a "professional".

On my first trade on TGN, this guy sent me Rallisport Challenge and another racing game (can't think of the name of the moment) in addition to whatever the original trade was. I thought he made a mistake. :)

I found a copy of mario land (the game boy one... i forgot its name) on the street

I was also moving furniture out of this old house my dad bought (he's in real estate) and found metroid 2 (also game boy, those games can survive through anything) behind a couch

I registered my GBA way back when and won my choice of either Super Mario Advance, Advance Wars, Castlevania CoTM, or some other game. I took Advance Wars since I had Mario and CoTM, and the other game was not that appealing to me.

Also, during a particular bad music drought I picked up the Duke Nukem music CD (anyone remember it? Music to Score By). The liner notes mentioned a contest, so I went to the website and entered. It required the answer to a really cryptic question that I just guessed at after scouring the liner notes. I won the grand prize, which included a Duke Nukem figure, another copy of the CD (why?), a poster, some postcards, and a copy each of the then-just-released Duke Nukem: Zero Hour on N64 AND Duke Nukem:Time To Kill on the PSX. And for some reason they threw in a new copy of Gran Turismo.

I got The Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition for registering my then 2 year old GameCube on Nintendo's website. The requirement specifically said I have to input codes from 2 more GC games. All of a sudden the Zelda showed up at my doors without me having to buy 2 more GC games for the codes, and my GC was 2 years old too. Weird, but glad.

I get classic games for free at gamestop all the time, I work there and we dont buy the classic systems anymore, sometimes people just give them to you. Ive gotten 2 dreamcasts, a saturn, and a top loading nes, and tons of games for all the classic systems for free. One of my co-workers got a turbografix16, I was angry because I wanted it.

I was at GameCrazy not too long ago and the manager gave me a copy of Kakuto Chojin (disc only).. I already had it, but I took it anyways.. he was trading in his XBox and all the games, but that one wasn't in their system.

I got a free copy of Dragon Warrior for my NES just for subscribing to Nintendo Power... it just showed up in the mail completely unannounced - sweet!

When I was younger I was offered a free Gamegear game of my choice (I forget why, but it was through Sega). My dad had to send in a form saying which one I wanted (Shinobi), so we had to do a little, but not much.

Lots... all the Genesis/Sega CD games were given to me by friends. Also, quite a few copied PC and DC games.

At my Gamestop here, I get demos usually from the nice guy that works there.

I got Suikoden 1 manual from zion. He offered it to me for free. That was before he got greedy . Oh well...good old days.

I ended up with a XIII for free from Circuit City last year. For some reason it wasn't ringing up, so the cashier said, "Enh, just take it". I wasn't going to argue!

My Aunt bought herself a n64, and super mario 64, for herself, and gave it to me because i liked it, it wasnt on occasion or anything, she was just starting a new job, and was very generous

Just this past Xmas I got Tiger Woods 2005 from my gf for nothing. (Unless you want to count the $$$ I spent on her gifts ;) )

I gave one of my friends who lived down the street pretty much all of my Atari 2600 games after the NES came out. Then once the NES was dead I let my sister give most of my NES games to one of her friend's brothers.

I got a Sega Saturn and about 30 games for free from my sister. I also just got the CD soundtrack for Narc for free because my people I am cool with at local Gamestop let me have it.
a free copy of GT3: A-Spec from that Kellogg cereal promotion (thanks to CAG and Gamefaq'ers for posting the contest codes).
I remember that -- I just clicked refresh for a few minutes and eventually got a copy.

Went towards my massive trade-in spree at Gamerush over christmas.

My friend gave me a Link Dx for gameboy, he didn't really care for it. My friend found Martian Gothic in the street once...

wow how wierd I read this today...

My co-worker has a friend who works for THQ and she gives him games from time to time. He didn't want Full Spectrum Metal Warrior (he doesn't have a PS2) and just gave it to me today! I have it sitting next to me with the press release that came in the envelope, the game is still new sealed. What a happy day, I wonder if its any good.

A friend of mine has an aunt that worked at Nintendo in Washington. He doesn't play a whole lot of games, so all of the freebies she sent him would go right to me! Damn, did I get a lot of games and accessories that way!

Not counting birthdays and holiday gifts, one of my friends gave me Jurassic Park and Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (both SNES) and Need For Speed: High Stakes (PlayStation) about a year ago, just because he didn't want them.

Last summer I won Arc The Lad: Twilight Of The Sprits (PS2) in a Hershey's contest I forgot I had even entered.

I don't know if it counts as doing nothing, but in Spring 2002, Kellogg's cereal had an Eet and Ern Promotion. They were giving away 1 game every minute for an entire week on there website using Eet and Ern codes (easy to obtain). I won 1 copy of Frequency and 5 copies of Parappa The Rapper 2 (they didn't tell you what games you would win and you could win multiple times).

In November of 2002, they had a contest for Treasure Planet, I'm not sure if they gave away a game a minute like the last contest but it was extremely easy to win and I won a copy of Treasure Planet for PS2.

Another time about 6 or 7 years ago, I was at Funcoland and I wanted Super Mario Brothers for NES just to try to open up the cartridge and see what the inside of a NES cartridge looked like since it was only $0.01. The worker said I could just take it for free because they had so many of them.

In junior high I found two gamebody colors with a game in each (seperate occasions), one was a mario game that I really enjoyed and I forget what the other was. Still have the gameboys since they dont accept them for trade ins when the screen is so heavily damaged.

I got Dragon warrior from the Nintendo Power promo, and the Zelda CE by offering to pay for it at Kmart. They just handed it to me.

I got the Zelda ZE from Nintendo twice... once for subscribing to NP and another for registering my GC and 3 games
I found Super Mario Advance 2 laying on the street. It worked after having to clean it couple of times.
A friend of mine gave me Tetris Attack for the SNES because he had two copies. I spent countless hours on that game.
About 7 years ago, I was walking past the basement of my building where people leave their recyclables and on top of all the boxes and stuff was a NES game holder. It was one of those that holds 10 games or something. Anyway, I popped the lid and saw that there were games still inside, Top Gun, Renegade, Operation Wolf, Golgo 13, and a couple others I can't remember.

Another one I forgot to mention, ToysRUs.com had this deal where you got $5 off of your purchase if you sent someone a referal e-mail. They had Sim City for SNES for $3 with free shipping so I got it for free with the coupon

How long ago was this?

I almost got a free dot hack Quarantine from Gamestop once. I was buying a copy of dot hack Quarantine and some other game and the guy had taken two of the dot hacks out and placed them on the counter. After ringing me up for the games, he accidentally put both of the dot hacks into the bag plus the other game. When I discovered his mistake, I ran back to the store to give him the game back. I remember when I almost got fired for doing the same thing my third day at work and didn't want to cost the guy his job over a free game for myself.

Hey, some people do make a living working at video game stores. I would have felt horrible if this guy was one of them.

A year of Xbox live for free that was in the rental case of SC:pT, just for the asking at my local Blockbuster.

i buy a lot of games from the pawn shops around here and a couple times when i'm buying a lot of games they'll give me one or two for free.. i get a bunch of NES and SNES games this way.

About 2 years ago, I helped my friend move out of his parents house. As his thanks to me for helping him move, he gave me a Sega CDX, 32X, 5 Sega CD games, 3 32x games, 1 PS1 memory card and 8 PS1 games(which were mostly RPGs like Beyond the Beyond).

He also offered me a NES w/ 10 games(that were really common games) & a Atari 2600 w/ a missing RF adaptor & 15 games(including Frogger & Pac-Man). But I turned him down for those and told him to keep them.
