I can imagine that Google Checkout deal with Buy.com and VideoUniverse is easily the best deal for HD-DVD and Blu-Ray at the moment.

I'm still debating if I'm getting the 360 HD-DVD add-on, so I haven't bought any movies yet, but it's tempting.

The Amazon 10% off "club" is a good idea since Amazon seems to be posting the lowest HDDVD Prices online right now. They're about $4-$9 dollars cheaper than most other big stores right now.

This could change, of course.

Is there a link to this deal? I was looking to add it to the first post, but I had no luck.

Thanks!

Same here. Then again I vowed the same thing during the whole DVD-Audio vs SACD war. In the end I wound up with my Pioneer player that plays both.... and they both flopped anyways.

Oh wait... there still are SACDs being released. If you love classical, jazz, or semi obscure (by today's standards) classic rock. And you are willing to import most releases that you do want.

I picked up 10 blu ray movies and 2 hd-dvd ones with the google checkout from buy.com, which I talked about in the other thread. :D Very good deals.

How much have you guys been seeing used HD-DVD and Blu-Ray selling for? I just picked up Ray for HD-DVD for $10 locally and am thinking about going back and getting the rest that they had since it felt dirt cheap. And Blu-Ray too.

I think EBAY and HALF.com would be your best bets for used HD/BD discs. $10 seems VERY fair, especially if they are known movies. I hope they drop in price pretty quick though.

I wouldn't be suprised if they start going lower because of the competing formats. I still remember when the average price for a DVD was 20-25 bucks back in 97-99. They'll start going down as production costs go down and consumers embrace either format more and more

Slightly offtopic:

Is it worth it to buy HD/BR discs of older movies? Is the quality really *that* much better? (Talking about stuff like Kubrick or Scorsese")

Depends on the transfer and how much time they spend on it. Full Metal Jacket supposedly is a really lousy upgrade in image quality, looking on par with the DVD in many cases. Some folks are saying that parts of THE DIRTY DOZEN are as soft as the DVD, while other scenes are razor sharp....that may very well be the camera/lenses/film used to shoot those scenes however.

GRAND PRIX is one movie where the HD version is very, very sharp.....but then again the DVD version is also pretty sharp too.

The Andromeda Strain, which isn't out on HD format yet but IS shown on Universal HD on cable now and then, that is SUPER sharp....

One big current bitch-fest going back and forth with people regarding how older movies are remastered to HD is: DO YOU REMOVE FILM GRAIN OR NOT.

Making a HD master can REALLY Bring out the grain in a panel of film....some folks want the grain removed, others want the grain intact.

PS: If you mean Goodfellas, I wouldn't bother upgrading.....reviews are stating its just about as good as the DVD version.

While HD will always have better COLOR than DVD, only movies that have alot of visual detail, or particularly long or distant shots in it will really have a noticible bump in image quality over DVD. Example...those huge battles in Lord of the Rings are going to look pretty amazing in HDDVD......whereas a movie like, say, Chasing Amy or something. Does that really need the HD treatment? Depends......

I was cruising ebay and there's some decent new prices. Half.com wasn't very good, couldn't find any. I did notice that EB.com has used HD/BR discs listed at 12.99, so it's good if you get lucky online/instore.

Well I'm thinking about grabbing a load of 'classic' DVDs that I had never gotten before (probably when DDD has their 20% sale). Seems a bit silly to do that, though, if I'll just have to get the HD version in a year or two :whistle2:/

it was out of stock when originally posted.. ill check now

edit.. yup still backordered

Google Checkout still seems to be working at BUY.com

DVDtalk.com has a better thread for deals also.....I can link it if people want me too.

Do we have to repeat what has been in the FIRST post?

DeepdiscountDVD.com now has good deals with the 20% off. Most decent movies are still $16+

So now that I'm looking into buying the HD-DVD drive for the X360, is 19.99 serioulsly the lowest for HD-DVD's? I know that DDD and Amazon have their 20% & 10% but they still come out to a little less than 19.99 each. Have they gone down in price, were they higher before?

On amazon most are 19.95, but HD-DVD/DVD Combos can retail for 27.95. It seems in the stores they're a lot more money though, were talking like the 19.95 ones being 30 bucks. I got a 360 HD DVD Player, and have been looking around for weeks for deals, and this is the best i've seen. I also turned my netflix account to send me HD-DVDS if available. Hope that helps

All my amazons shipped were like $18.xx and change......thats why I'm only buying select movies, nothing that comes out over $20 bucks.

Deep Discount DVD's current sale should get you dvd's shipped at around $16.xx and change...but someone said they raised their prices once the sale started which, if true, would be a total bait and switch.

The ones that are really expensive..$27 and up are Dual-format discs. DVD on one side, HD-DVD on the other..and people HATE them.....its too expensive to buy both....lets hope they dont last (Land of the Dead is like this).

For the most part the cheapest places are Amazon onlne and right now DeepDiscountDVD with free shipping and 20% off. If you go amazon sign up for their PRIME service so shipping is free 2 day..then cancel PRIME member ship before
3 months is up or they'll stick you for $80 bucks for the year, a real rip IMHO.

Target B&M seems to be cheaper than all other B&Ms...I picked up Training Day and Batman Begins for $19.99 each. CC and BB had all their titles at $24.99

Amazon is cheaper with free shipping, but you wait longer. There is also someplace called FamilyVideo.com I think (unsure if thats a working URL or not) that people say are selling HD's for $16.00 each, but I have no idea on their reliability or what....just something I read over on AVS Forums.

Amazon seems to be the best right now...if you buy THREE at once you get 10% off.

Target does sell most for $19.99. I know some people found some REALLY cheap ($13.99 I think) there, I'll assume a misprice though.

DDD did RAISE the prices for HD-DVD's. They are now around $18.xx shipped. Which is close to Amazon for THIS week at least.

Target has all the BR discs 20% off THIS WEEK ONLY. My store had maybe 15 titles only. HD-DVD is still $19.99 for the lower priced titles at Target.

I noticed Best Buy had House of Wax for $18.99....while the rest where $24.99 or more.

Not only that but I've read a few posts on other boards that say the quality of the dual format discs kind of sucks.

I think I may order from Amazon for the 3 for 10% off...I want Smallville S5 on the cheap, but DDD doesn't allow the 20% off on pre-orders.
So how long until the movie industry gets tired of the two formats and consumers choose one to be the standard? I will give it 6 months.
Its going to take longer than that, if ever. With the popularity of DVD and new download services, consumers may end up avoiding the new standards altogether.

If you're lucky enough to live near a Fry's check this out:

$14.99 each

HD-DVD:
Terminator 3
Aeon Flux
The Italian Job
Troy
Constantine
We Were Soldiers

Blu-Ray:
Hitch
A Knight's Tale
XXX
Stealth
50 First Dates
The Big Hit
Memento
The Fifth Element
Tears of the Sun
Into the Blue
Underworld: Evolutions
S.W.A.T.
Crouching Tiger Flying Dragon

Sale ends 11/21

I just bit on the Amazon deal. I think in the long run, it's where I'll go to get my HD-DVDs, and if another has them cheaper, I'll go there. However, that Amazon deal has that whole year thing going for it. That'll be it's saving grace over damn near everything else.
