for those that have HDTVs i need some help. i'm looking for a great HDTV with 1080p resolution, around 37", and with a price point of around $1000. does anyone have suggestions/know which TVs perform better?
thanks

How far away will you be sitting? I just ask as I couldn't go with anything smaller than 50", but I can see 37" being ok if it's a small room (dorm etc.) and you'll be sitting very close.

I bought a 50" Sony LCD RPTV last summer for $999.99 so bigger sizes are possible in your budget.

For a 37" I'd say go with a decent LCD TV from Sony, Sharp etc. if you can find one in that price range, or save up. I wouldn't go cheap and get a Westinghouse, Vizio etc. You get what you pay for. I first bought a 42" Vizio Plasma last summer and ended up returning it as it made loud buzzing noises and their technician couldn't fix it (said it was just a typical problem of that model).

it'll be in a pretty large room but i have space limitations because it has to fit in a certain place.
anyway i'll most likely be sitting about 5 ft away from it.

At 5 feet you can get away with smaller set. I sit roughly 9-10 feet from my 50".

For your price range you're looking at getting a deal on an LCD TV, I'd just take a trip to a best buy, circuit city etc. and check out 37" LCD sets, write down which models you like then come back and do some research on them, price checks and watch for deals.

Yeah, at 5 feet a 37" set is right on the fringe of whether the benefits of 1080p are noticeable. I just went 720p on my 50" as I couldn't tell a difference in the stores standing 10 feet away (my home viewing distance).
That chart confuses me :headache:
Just look at your viewing distance and screen size (or combos you're thinking about) then find where they intersect and see whether the benefit of 720p or 1080p is noticeable at that combo.

Basically, the idea is the further you sit away (or the smaller the tv) the less noticeable the benefits are.

At 10 feet and a 50" TV the full benefits of 720p are noticeable (over 480p basically), but the benefits of 1080p aren't visible. You have to be 6 or so feet to get the full benefits of 1080p with that set up. But as the shaded areas show you start to notice some benefit at closer distances--just not the full benefit.

i just measured the distance and it's just short of 5 ft.
but back to my original question, does anyone have a particular brand or model that u like?

also, what do ppl look for in an HDTV in the store. most of them look pretty much the same to me :/
some are brighter than others but i can't really tell the difference between much else but my friends will be able to notice lol

I know you're thinking "An LG tv?!?!" But according to the ISF it has more accurate colors than even samsung only it's black levels are just a touch less good. But it's cheapish for an HDTV ($1000) and it's what you want a 1080p 37"

check out some reviews for it
